Book Zionism and the Jewish Religion Classic Reprint

Download or read book Zionism and the Jewish Religion Classic Reprint written by F. S. Spiers and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-04 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Zionism and the Jewish Religion I In Rabbinic phraseology. The good of all nations share in the world to come. 5 Exod. Xix. 5.call the modern way of looking at religious ideas approximates to the highest conceptions of Judaism, as stated for example by Maimonides. Maimonides above all Jewish thinkers regards God as absolute; he goes so far, when he is in his highest philosophic mood as to refuse to postulate any posi tive attributes whatsoever in regard to the Godhead, and he finally defines God in terms of negative attributes only. If we adopt this as the ultimate Jewish standpoint, we must conclude that when any relationship between God and man. Is spoken of, the process of change implied in such relationship can be referred to man only and not to God. A revelation from God to man, then, put into the language of philosophical theism, means a particular state of mind on the part of man, by which he is brought into some sort of special but indefin able contact with the Absolute perfection called God. The prophets, sages, and saints of Israel, who have been in the old language the vehicles of revelation, become in the new language those in whom the soul of the Jewish people, which is one aspect of the spirit of God, has most mightily manifested itself. This conception of Israel's national destiny, of a special relationship between God and the people of Israel, which only imposes upon it higher duties because the national sense of God in Israel is truer than that of other peoples, finds its classic expression in the Book of Amos. The history of Israel is neither more nor less a part of the Divine plan than is the history of any other nation Have not I brought up Israel out of the land of Egypt and the Philistines from Caphtor and the Aramaeans from Kir (ix. 7) But Israel has known God as no other nation has known him, and it must take the consequences of that knowledge for good or for evil: Only you havei known of all the families of the earth, therefore will I visit upon you all your iniquities (iii. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Zionism and the Jewish Diaspora The special place which the land of Israel occupied in the spiritual as well as in their national life was, of course, part of that religious discipline which, like the people, was intended to serve a higher purpose. But it is only necessary to refer to the great Prophets of Israel, who proclaimed the universality of His sway, to realise that the land of Israel was indeed regarded as a priceless possession. It was not only, in the words of Deuteronomy, a land which the Lord thy God careth for always are the eyes of the Lord thy God upon it (deut. Xi., or in the appeal of the psalmist, For thy servants take pleasure in her stones and favour the dust thereo (ps. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Zionism and Jewish Culture Whether with a view to preserving Judaism or to saving the Jews from extinction, it was necessary to set up a counter acting force to this centrifugal self-despising movement; and that force could be found mainly in the encouragement of Jewish culture. From its inception, then, the Zionist move ment has embraced as part of its programme the revival of the Jewish consciousness - end that in two directions: by the re-establishment of a Jewish system of education and a Jewish national life in Palestine, and by the endeavour to stimulate the Spread of the Hebrew language and the knowledge of Jewish history and literature, and generally to revive the national consciousness, in the communities of the Diaspora. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Zionism It was with much pleasure that I accepted the mandate, Offered to me by The Jewish Publication Society of America, to contribute an essay on Zion ism as one of a series dealing with prominent Jewish movements. Whichever side of the ques tion appeals to us, we must all recognize that under the name Zionism a solution Of the Jewish problem has been presented which must be of much moment for the future of the Jewish people. I venture to think that it is the only solution and to hold that the weal or woe of our race depends upon our espousal or rejection of it. In saying so much, I am prac tically affirming my standpoint. I make no excuse for the trend of my thought. I have written frankly as a Zionist, and I believe that the Publi cation Society and its many members will be served best by the presentation of all such subjects at the hand Of those whose sympathy for them has made them able to understand their essence. Download or read book Zionism and the Jewish Future Classic Reprint written by H. Sacher and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-21 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Zionism and the Jewish Future What is called the "Jewish problem" presents itself under different aspects in different countries, but when we get beneath temporary and accidental features, the problem is seen to be essentially that of fitting into the modern world a national group which has survived from ancient times without the ordinary attributes of nationhood. This is equally true whether the problem be regarded from within or from without, from the point of view of the Jew or from that of the world. The modern world sets the Jew the problem of maintaining some sort of distinctive existence without the external props of territorial sovereignty and a political machine, and the Jew sets the modern world the problem of finding for him a place in its social structure which shall enable him to live as a human being without demanding that he cease to be a Jew. In both cases what gives the problem its peculiar character is the fact that the Jews, regarded simply as Jews, as members of the national group to which Palestine belonged 2,000 years ago, no longer possess that national unity which is expressed in and secured by possession of a homeland, a common language, and common institutions. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Zionism: An Appreciation and Criticism Dr Gaster's statement in the chapter on Judaism, a National Religion, ' in Zionism and the jewish Future, is illogical. 'no one can be a Jew who does not belong to the Jewish faith, and he who belongs to the Jewish faith belongs to the Jewish nation. A Jew who changes his faith is torn up by the roots. There is no longer any connexion between him and other Jews. He has practically died. This is the common ground on which Jews are united. There may be degrees in the strength and quality of the faith which each one acknowledges as binding on him. But we have no inquisition. As long as a Jew has not publicly renounced his faith and embraced another, he belongs to the Jewish nation. It is of extreme importance to realize that this alone constitutes a Jew - that the nationality of the Jew depends on his faith; for Judaism is a national religion (p. The moment a Jew has forsworn his faith he has lost everything that is Jewish. A Christian can change his faith, and yet remain a member of the nation. A Protestant English man can become a Roman Catholic, and still remain an English man and so with every other nation. Not so with the Jews (p. It is impossible to speak of degrees and quality of the faith in one who professes atheism and attacks all religion, Judaism included. And yet such a man has no difficulty in becoming a member of the Zionist organization, and in being recognized as a Jew and one of the nation. There are Jews who sever their national bonds and tend towards the 'dissolution of the people of Israel in their non-jewish surroundings. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Zionist Primer This volume published by Young Judaea attempts to make clear to the Jewish. Youth the Jewish problem and the solution as formulated in the Zionist program. Young Judaea is an organization of young men and young women who are awakened to the needs of our people and who desire to equip themselves for effective service in the training of our youth. We feel the menace of a generation growing up in ignorance of its history, traditions and national ideals. Education in the schools of America can teach the new generation only the beau ties of other cultures, and the heroisms of other nations. The Bible has become a sealed book, or one to be read in the light of an interpretation dominated by alien thought; and the heroic figures of our own history, our national revival and the Hebrew renaissance are almost entirely unknown. In xxvi. 1349, there is a strong contrast between the utter and hopeless destruction of Israel's enemies and the sudden increase of their own people. Then follows a description of the half-desperate yearnings of the people which should precede the fulfilment of this promise. Book The Jewish Problem How to Solve It Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Jewish Problem How to Solve It Classic Reprint written by Louis Dembitz Brandeis and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-10-05 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Jewish Problem, How to Solve It Why is it that liberalism has failed to eliminate the Ah ti-jewish prejudice? It is because the liberal movement has not yet brought full liberty. Enlightened countries grant to the individual equality before the law; but they fail still to recognize the equality of whole peoples or nationalities. We seek to protect as individuals those constituting a minority; but we fail to realize that protection cannot be complete um less group equality also is recognized. Deeply imbedded in every people is the desire for full development - the longing, as Mazzini phrased it to elaborate and express their idea, to contribute their stone also to the pyramid of history. Nationality like democracy has been one of the potent forces making for man's advance during the past hundred years. The assertion of nationality has infused whole peeples with hope, manhood and self-respect. It has ennobled and made purposeful millions of lives. It offered them a future, and in doing so revived and capitalized all that was valuable in their past. The assertion of nation ality raised Ireland from the slough of despondency. It roused Southern Slavs to heroic deeds. It created gallant Belgium. It freed Greece. It gave us united Italy. It man ifested itself even among free peoples - like the Welsh who had no grievance, but who gave expression to their nationality through the revival of the old Cymric tongue. Each of these peeples developed because, as Mazzini said, they were enabled to proclaim to the world that they also live, think, love and labor for the benefit of all.
