Hallqvist, and Lisbeth Smedegaard Andersen. Grindal not only gives a biographical account of each woman her life, her piety, her times but also offers sparkling new English translations of each writer s key hymns. Book Learning to Swim

Download or read book Learning to Swim written by Marjorie Saiser and published by Stephen F. Austin University Press. This book was released on 2019 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this rare collected gift of poetry and memoir, Learning to Swim does not disappoint. From the simple way Saiser captures the smallest of things that make up our lives, these economical yet powerful poems transport us to the plains with snow where the "snow which well all day brush against the shingles" to the galaxy where we are alone with airplains blinking paths through starts and crickets stirring in the weeds like enemies or memories dredged from the sixth grade where "Mrs. Fischer loved language and knew its power, so she drew its shadows on the chalkboard." In the end, we are left with the familiar, "a jagged tear in the kitchen ceiling," "a fault line" where "guests pause when deciding on chardonnay or beer." It is a collection like this that brings us back to what we love most, connection to a world that at best is indifferent, and Saiser's deftly rendered story of place and its characters does not disappoint.

Book The Struggle of Hungarian Lutherans under Communism

Download or read book The Struggle of Hungarian Lutherans under Communism written by H. David Baer and published by Texas A&M University Press. This book was released on 2013-03-29 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What does a religious community do when confronted by a political regime determined to eliminate a religion? Under communism, Hungary’s persecuted Lutheran Church tried desperately to find a strategy for survival while remaining faithful to its Christian beliefs. Appealing to the Lutheran Confessions, many argued that the church can do whatever is necessary to survive provided it does not compromise on its essential ministry, while others appealing to the witness of the confessor Bishop Lajos Ordass, argued that the church must uncompromisingly witness to the truth even if that means ecclesiological extinction. In The Struggle of Hungarian Lutherans under Communism, H. David Baer draws upon the disciplines of theology, history, ethics, and politics to provide a comprehensive analysis of the different strategies developed by the church to preserve its integrity. Relying on previously unnoted archival documents and other primary sources, Baer has made a substantial contribution to Eastern European studies. Vigorously written, his telling of the history is also a sensitive and moving account of courage and cowardice in the face of religious persecution. This book should be of interest not only to students of religion in Eastern Europe but also to anyone concerned about the problems that arise wherever there is religious persecution.
