Book excerpt: Three years at college were no less than a roller coaster ride for him. From finding love on the first day of college, to witnessing it being shattered in front of his eyes; from enjoying night-outs to staying up all night for close ones; from being carefree and the life and soul of all parties to growing into a responsible and rational adult, he has seen it all. As his life takes a major 360 degree turn, he realizes that the situations an individual faces in life are nothing but a learning process. You come to terms with the truths of life, start understanding the value of money and hard-work, and at the same time, are able to judge people and relationships within a family to evaluate it better.

Download or read book Bastions of the Believers written by Yoginder Sikand and published by Penguin Books India. This book was released on 2005 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The emergence of radical Islamist movements in various parts of the world, the rise and fall of the Taliban in Afghanistan, the 9/11 attacks, widespread vilification spearheaded by Hindutva groups--all these and more have made madrasas a much talked about institution. Focussing on the madrasas of India, Bastions of the Believers seeks to critically interrogate sensationalist and stereotypical images of the madrasas by highlighting their diversity and the complex social roles that they play in the lives of many Muslims. Madrasas, as a rule, represent a conservative form of theology and jurisprudence that is, in many ways, ill-suited to a modern, pluralistic society. Much of what is taught in madrasas is outdated and unscientific (the Deoband madrasa, for instance, still insists that the sun revolves around the earth, and it has special seating arrangements for invisible jinns). Yet, obscurantism need not necessarily lead to militancy and hostility against others. For instance, in the decades leading to India's independence, the Deobandis, representing an extreme form of religious conservatism, insisted on Hindu-Muslim amity and a joint struggle for a free and united India. It is this integrated view of madrasas and a more liberal and open understanding of Islam, and indeed of all faiths, which Yoginder Sikand seeks to promote--for he believes this is one of the principal duties confronting committed believers if we have to learn to live together despite our differences. Bastions of the Believers covers a wide range of thought-provoking issues--from the origins and development of the institution to critiques of madrasa curricula and the alleged links between madrasas and Islamist militancy--making this a must-read for all those interested in creating and preserving a just social order.

Download or read book Yeh Un Dino Ki Baat Hai written by Yasir Abbasi and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2018-12-18 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Peppered with heartfelt accounts and charming anecdotes, Urdu film magazines were in great favour with the public from the 1930s through the 1990s – a considerable period of seven decades. Unfortunately, as Urdu got progressively marginalised in later years, these magazines were not archived, for the most part; leading to their inevitable disappearance from popular imagination. Tracking down these lost publications, Yasir Abbasi followed leads – some futile, some fruitful – to obscure towns and people's homes in a last-ditch effort to save valuable records of Indian cinema. As challenging as it was to locate faded issues and original texts, he managed to uncover and translate many fabulous memoirs covering a wide gamut of our favourite old artistes at their candid best. A gloom-laced piece on Meena Kumari by Nargis, a rollicking description by Raja Mehdi Ali Khan of an eventful evening with Manto (not to mention a mysterious woman and a house on fire), Jaidev writing about his chequered career, Balraj Sahni introspecting about the relevance of Hindi and Urdu in films – it's a rich mix of engrossing narratives brought back from oblivion.

Where available, music credits go beyond information regarding music directors, lyricists and singers, and include the names of session musicians, assistants, programmers, arrangers, mixers, recordists, etc. Where applicable, music related awards are listed. Interesting trivia is listed for most films, more than 1500 in all. This includes information about artist debuts, plagiarised or sampled songs, controversies and stories behind the making of the film and its music. This book is primarily meant as a quick reference for people looking for information related to a Hindi film or a song, but readers can also browse through the book to get an overview of the events that shaped Bollywood music in the decade. Given that Hindi films are a reflection of the Indian society, the reader can also glean insights about the country's socio-political and cultural environment from the book.

Book excerpt: From a penniless lad at the age of thirteen to a mafia boss in his early youth and a successful businessman as well as a venerated pillar of society in his later life, B.C. Mishra, like the mob boss Corleone, never let his values of dignity and ethics be compromised. Through all his life-altering decisions, he remained steadfast and courageous. His fairness, generosity, and sincerity, plus an unwillingness to let vengefulness cloud his judgment bought him the loyalty and support of lawbreakers and lawmen alike, while his business acumen and great foresight helped him to forge the life he always wanted for himself. And, like Corleone, he stayed loyal and devoted to his family, especially his wife and partner of many years, thus becoming the revered patriarch to a large number of people and an inspirational figure to all.
Download or read book The Poetician written by ?? Pathak (Lov Pathak) and published by Notion Press. This book was released on 2021-07-11 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I am you; you are me. We both are in this book. If you hold a bachelor degree in common sense and satire is your first language, you will enjoy the read. The Poetician is a cheeky, colloquial, social, in the face satire about the lives we live in contemporary times. Every poetry is a story; unification of past with present and amalgamation of a skeptical future. The title ‘Practical vs Theory’ makes you realize what a fool this education system had made out of you. ‘Cheekhta-Chillata Shehar’ is a blunt satire on an un-environmentally friendly city. ‘Foodie-Mere ped ki dastaan’ will leave you with a humorous aftertaste. ‘Maryadapurshottam Mard’ is a satirical take on the lives of the eldest sons in the Indian family. ‘Hindi medium ka chatra’ is a satire on the colonial language. ‘Manto’ and ‘Munshi ji’ are odes to the legends. ‘Best friends forever’ deals with the dark world of teenage issues and friendship. ‘Jahaalat’ translates the crassness of modern young society. ‘Parchaiyan’ is my arrogant, angry battle with life. ‘Bachche Zinda hain’ is a raw, compelling, naked truth about how we treat the young citizens of this country. I would say just read and then decide if you found yourself or not.
