Book excerpt: The English-speaking world today is so diverse that readers need a gateway to its many postcolonial narratives and art forms. This collection of essays examines this diver¬sity and what brings so many different cul¬tures together. Whether Indian, Canadian, Australasian or Zimbabwean, the stories dis¬cussed focus on how artists render experi¬ences of separation, belonging, and loss. The histories and transformations postcolonial countries have gone through have given rise to a wide range of myths that retrace their birth, evolution, and decline. Myths have enabled ethnic communities to live together; the first section of this collection dwells on stories, which can be both inclusive and exclusive, under the aegis of ‘nation’. While certain essays revisit and retell the crucial role women have played in mythical texts like the Mahābhārata, others discuss how settler colonies return to and re-appro¬priate a past in order to define themselves in the present. Crises, clashes, and conflicts, which are at the heart of the second section of this book, entail myths of historical and cultural dislocation. They appear as breaks in time that call for reconstruction and redefini¬tion, a chief instance being the trauma of slavery, with its deep geographical and cul¬tural dislocations. However, the crises that have deprived entire communities of their homeland and their identity are followed by moments of remembrance, reconciliation, and rebuilding. As the term ‘postcolonial’ sug¬gests, the formerly colonized people seek to revisit and re-investigate the impact of colo¬nization before committing it to collective memory. In a more specifically literary sec¬tion, texts are read as mythopoeia, fore¬grounding the aesthetic and poetic issues in colonial and postcolonial poems and novels. The texts explored here study in different ways the process of mytho¬logization through images of location and dislocation. The editors of this collection hope that readers worldwide will enjoy reading about the myths that have shaped and continue to shape postcolonial communities and nations. Book excerpt: Evangelistic Poetry & Zimbabwe’s Adult Literacy Campaign: Two major assignments by a former BTC Student 1984-87 as the title states are two pieces of inspirational and literary research work written in the form of both a depth study and a major assignment for the Belvedere Teacher’s College departments of English and Education respectively. Due to the time gap of over three decades between the time when I wrote the original assignments and the time I eventually managed to get the two tasks published, I must admit, as I converted the handwritten assignments into a typed manuscript, I felt obliged to alter some parts of it and this was a bit more pronounced in the Evangelistic poetry probably because right from its onset it was dominantly more of what some readers might others might view as personal views or personal convictions which, I however personally view as dominantly ‘divine inspiration’. Consistent with my original intention, the poems seek to function as a vehicle which a reader can aboard and allow the Spirit of God drive them to their conviction or conversion point to experience the new spiritual birth if they have never reached that point before. Hence, in comparison with orthodox religious poems, these are basically preaching poems aimed at winning the reader’s soul for Christ if they are not ‘born again’. Part 2 of the book mainly discusses Zimbabwe’s post independence National Adult Literacy Campaign; problems and progress. It gives the reader a glimpse of the background and foundation work which eventually upgraded Zimbabwe to a status of into having the highest rate of literacy (reportedly around 92%) in contemporary Africa.

Book excerpt: This study, the first book-length treatment of its subject, draws on a large base of elusive material and on extensive field research. It is the result of the author's wide experience of teaching and producing theatre in Africa, and of her fascination with the ways in which traditional performance forms have interacted with, or have resisted, non-indigenous modes of dramatic representation in the process of evolving into the vital theatres of the present day. A comparative historical study is offered of the three national cultures of Ethiopia, Tanganyika/Tanzania, and Rhodesia/Zimbabwe. Not only (scripted) drama is treated, but also theatre in the sense of the broader range of performance arts such as dance and song. The development of theatre and drama is seen against the background of centuries of cultural evolution and interaction, from pre-colonial times, through phases of African and European imperialism, to the liberation struggles and newly-won independence of the present. The seminal relationship between theatre, society and politics is thus a central focus. Topics covered include: the function in theatre of vernacular and colonial languages; performance forms under feudal, communalist and socialist régimes; cultural militancy and political critique; the relationship of theatre to social élites and to the peasant class; state control (funding and censorship); racism and separate development in the performing arts; contemporary performance structures (amateur, professional, community and university theatre). Due attention is paid to prominent dramatists, theatre groups and theatre directors, and the author offers new insight into African perceptions of the role of the artist in the theatre, as well as dealing with the important subject of gender roles (in drama, in performance ritual, and in theatre practice).
