Book Total Positivity and Its Applications

Download or read book Total Positivity and Its Applications written by Mariano Gasca and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 510 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains both invited lectures and contributed talks presented at the meeting on Total Positivity and its Applications held at the guest house of the University of Zaragoza in Jaca, Spain, during the week of September 26-30, 1994. There were present at the meeting almost fifty researchers from fourteen countries. Their interest in thesubject of Total Positivity made for a stimulating and fruitful exchange of scientific information. Interest to participate in the meeting exceeded our expectations. Regrettably, budgetary constraints forced us to restriet the number of attendees. Professor S. Karlin, of Stanford University, who planned to attend the meeting had to cancel his participation at the last moment. Nonetheless, his almost universal spiritual presence energized and inspired all of us in Jaca. More than anyone, he influenced the content, style and quality of the presentations given at the meeting. Every article in these Proceedings (except some by Karlin hirnself) references his influential treatise Total Positivity, Volume I, Stanford University Press, 1968. Since its appearance, this book has intrigued and inspired the minds of many researchers (one of us, in his formative years, read the galley proofs and the other of us first doubted its value but then later became its totally committed disciple). All of us present at the meeting encourage Professor Karlin to return to the task of completing the anxiously awaited Volume 11 of Total Positivity.

Book The Operator Hilbert Space OH Complex Interpolation and Tensor Norms

Download or read book The Operator Hilbert Space OH Complex Interpolation and Tensor Norms written by Gilles Pisier and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 1996 with total page 119 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the recently developed duality theory of operator spaces, bounded operators are replaced by 'completely bounded' ones, isomorphism by 'complete isomorphisms' and Banach spaces by 'operator spaces'. This allows for distinguishing between the various ways in which a given Banach space can be embedded isometrically into [italic capital]B([italic capital]H) (with H being Hilbert). One of the main results is the observation that there is a central object in this class: there is a unique self dual Hilbertian operator space (which we denote by [italic capitals]OH) which seems to play the same central role in the category of operator spaces that Hilbert spaces play in the category of Banach spaces.

Book Combinatorics and Commutative Algebra

Download or read book Combinatorics and Commutative Algebra written by Richard P. Stanley and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-12-13 with total page 173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: * Stanley represents a broad perspective with respect to two significant topics from Combinatorial Commutative Algebra: 1) The theory of invariants of a torus acting linearly on a polynomial ring, and 2) The face ring of a simplicial complex * In this new edition, the author further develops some interesting properties of face rings with application to combinatorics

Book Maximal Cohen Macaulay Modules and Tate Cohomology

Download or read book Maximal Cohen Macaulay Modules and Tate Cohomology written by Ragnar-Olaf Buchweitz and published by American Mathematical Society. This book was released on 2021-12-16 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a lightly edited version of the unpublished manuscript Maximal Cohen–Macaulay modules and Tate cohomology over Gorenstein rings by Ragnar-Olaf Buchweitz. The central objects of study are maximal Cohen–Macaulay modules over (not necessarily commutative) Gorenstein rings. The main result is that the stable category of maximal Cohen–Macaulay modules over a Gorenstein ring is equivalent to the stable derived category and also to the homotopy category of acyclic complexes of projective modules. This assimilates and significantly extends earlier work of Eisenbud on hypersurface singularities. There is also an extensive discussion of duality phenomena in stable derived categories, extending Tate duality on cohomology of finite groups. Another noteworthy aspect is an extension of the classical BGG correspondence to super-algebras. There are numerous examples that illustrate these ideas. The text includes a survey of developments subsequent to, and connected with, Buchweitz's manuscript.

Book Gr bner Deformations of Hypergeometric Differential Equations

Download or read book Gr bner Deformations of Hypergeometric Differential Equations written by Mutsumi Saito and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The theory of Gröbner bases is a main tool for dealing with rings of differential operators. This book reexamines the concept of Gröbner bases from the point of view of geometric deformations. The algorithmic methods introduced in this book are particularly useful for studying the systems of multidimensional hypergeometric PDE's introduced by Gelfand, Kapranov, and Zelevinsky. A number of original research results are contained in the book, and many open problems are raised for future research in this rapidly growing area of computational mathematics.

  • ISBN : 1441915958
  • Pages : 241 pages

Download or read book Deformation Theory written by Robin Hartshorne and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-12-10 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The basic problem of deformation theory in algebraic geometry involves watching a small deformation of one member of a family of objects, such as varieties, or subschemes in a fixed space, or vector bundles on a fixed scheme. In this new book, Robin Hartshorne studies first what happens over small infinitesimal deformations, and then gradually builds up to more global situations, using methods pioneered by Kodaira and Spencer in the complex analytic case, and adapted and expanded in algebraic geometry by Grothendieck. The author includes numerous exercises, as well as important examples illustrating various aspects of the theory. This text is based on a graduate course taught by the author at the University of California, Berkeley.

Book Cohen Macaulay Rings

    Book Details:
  • Author : Winfried Bruns
  • Publisher : Cambridge University Press
  • Release : 1998-06-18
  • ISBN : 0521566746

Download or read book Cohen Macaulay Rings written by Winfried Bruns and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1998-06-18 with total page 471 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the last two decades Cohen-Macaulay rings and modules have been central topics in commutative algebra. This book meets the need for a thorough, self-contained introduction to the homological and combinatorial aspects of the theory of Cohen-Macaulay rings, Gorenstein rings, local cohomology, and canonical modules. A separate chapter is devoted to Hilbert functions (including Macaulay's theorem) and numerical invariants derived from them. The authors emphasize the study of explicit, specific rings, making the presentation as concrete as possible. So the general theory is applied to Stanley-Reisner rings, semigroup rings, determinantal rings, and rings of invariants. Their connections with combinatorics are highlighted, e.g. Stanley's upper bound theorem or Ehrhart's reciprocity law for rational polytopes. The final chapters are devoted to Hochster's theorem on big Cohen-Macaulay modules and its applications, including Peskine-Szpiro's intersection theorem, the Evans-Griffith syzygy theorem, bounds for Bass numbers, and tight closure. Throughout each chapter the authors have supplied many examples and exercises which, combined with the expository style, will make the book very useful for graduate courses in algebra. As the only modern, broad account of the subject it will be essential reading for researchers in commutative algebra.

Book Enumerative Combinatorics Volume 1

Download or read book Enumerative Combinatorics Volume 1 written by Richard P. Stanley and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2011-12-12 with total page 641 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Richard Stanley's two-volume basic introduction to enumerative combinatorics has become the standard guide to the topic for students and experts alike. This thoroughly revised second edition of Volume 1 includes ten new sections and more than 300 new exercises, most with solutions, reflecting numerous new developments since the publication of the first edition in 1986. The author brings the coverage up to date and includes a wide variety of additional applications and examples, as well as updated and expanded chapter bibliographies. Many of the less difficult new exercises have no solutions so that they can more easily be assigned to students. The material on P-partitions has been rearranged and generalized; the treatment of permutation statistics has been greatly enlarged; and there are also new sections on q-analogues of permutations, hyperplane arrangements, the cd-index, promotion and evacuation and differential posets.

Book Positivity in Algebraic Geometry I

Download or read book Positivity in Algebraic Geometry I written by R.K. Lazarsfeld and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2004-08-24 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This two volume work on Positivity in Algebraic Geometry contains a contemporary account of a body of work in complex algebraic geometry loosely centered around the theme of positivity. Topics in Volume I include ample line bundles and linear series on a projective variety, the classical theorems of Lefschetz and Bertini and their modern outgrowths, vanishing theorems, and local positivity. Volume II begins with a survey of positivity for vector bundles, and moves on to a systematic development of the theory of multiplier ideals and their applications. A good deal of this material has not previously appeared in book form, and substantial parts are worked out here in detail for the first time. At least a third of the book is devoted to concrete examples, applications, and pointers to further developments. Volume I is more elementary than Volume II, and, for the most part, it can be read without access to Volume II.

Book Representation Theory and Complex Geometry

Download or read book Representation Theory and Complex Geometry written by Neil Chriss and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-12-24 with total page 506 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The book is largely self-contained...There is a nice introduction to symplectic geometry and a charming exposition of equivariant K-theory. Both are enlivened by examples related to groups...An attractive feature is the attempt to convey some informal ‘wisdom’ rather than only the precise definitions. As a number of results [are] due to the authors, one finds some of the original excitement. This is the only available introduction to geometric representation theory...it has already proved successful in introducing a new generation to the subject." (Bulletin of the AMS)

Book Singularities of Mappings

Download or read book Singularities of Mappings written by David Mond and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-01-23 with total page 572 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first monograph on singularities of mappings for many years, this book provides an introduction to the subject and an account of recent developments concerning the local structure of complex analytic mappings. Part I of the book develops the now classical real C∞ and complex analytic theories jointly. Standard topics such as stability, deformation theory and finite determinacy, are covered in this part. In Part II of the book, the authors focus on the complex case. The treatment is centred around the idea of the "nearby stable object" associated to an unstable map-germ, which includes in particular the images and discriminants of stable perturbations of unstable singularities. This part includes recent research results, bringing the reader up to date on the topic. By focusing on singularities of mappings, rather than spaces, this book provides a necessary addition to the literature. Many examples and exercises, as well as appendices on background material, make it an invaluable guide for graduate students and a key reference for researchers. A number of graduate level courses on singularities of mappings could be based on the material it contains.
