Aber es war fast, als habe der Vater die Gedanken seines Sohnes erraten, denn als er schon auf der Schwelle stand, um hinauszugehen, hielt er inne und wendete sich zu ihm. „Da du nicht mit Mutter und mir in die Kirche gehen willst,“ sagte er, „so sollst du wenigstens daheim die Predigt lesen. Willst du mir das versprechen?“ „Ja,“ antwortete der Junge, „das kann ich schon.“ Aber er dachte natürlich, er werde gewiß nicht mehr lesen, als ihm behagte. Dem Jungen kam es vor, als ob seine Mutter sich noch nie so rasch bewegt hätte. In einem Nu war sie am Bücherbrett, nahm Luthers Postille herunter, schlug die Predigt vom Tage auf und legte das Buch auf den Tisch am Fenster. Sie schlug auch das Evangelienbuch auf und legte es neben die Postille. Schließlich rückte sie noch den großen Lehnstuhl an den Tisch, der im vorigen Jahr auf der Auktion im Pfarrhause zu Vemmenhög gekauft worden war und in dem sonst außer Vater niemand sitzen durfte. Der Junge dachte, die Mutter mache sich wirklich zu viel Mühe mit diesen Vorbereitungen, denn er hatte im Sinne, nicht mehr als eine oder zwei Seiten zu lesen. Aber zum zweiten Male war es, als ob der Vater ihm mitten ins Herz sehen könnte, denn er trat zu ihm und sagte in strengem Ton: „Gib wohl acht, daß du ordentlich liest! Wenn wir zurückkommen, werde ich dich über jede Seite ausfragen, und wenn du etwas übergangen hast, geht es dir schlecht.“

Italy has long exerted a particular fascination on the Germans, and this has been reflected in German literature, most prominently in Goethe's Italienische Reise but also by numerous other writers who have returned to the topic. This book is concerned with two inextricably linked images - those of the German traveler in Italy and of Italy in German literature in the first third of the 19th century. Goethe's publication of his account nearly three decades after his actual journey was in some measure a vehicle to resist the challenge of a new generation of writers, who in turn would confront what they found to be a questionable, if not altogether false, representation. Hachmeister emphasizes the consequences of the disparity between the reality of Goethe's journey and his depiction of it, taking into consideration also his occasional discomfort with Italy's classical past. She shows how the German predilection for Italy is unique in the larger European cultural context of the Grand Tour, before moving on to chapters that contain readings of Italienische Reise and Goethe's Römische Elegien. Individual chapters follow on Eichendorff's Aus dem Leben eines Taugenichts, Platen's Sonette aus Venedig, and Heine's three Italian Reisebilder, each of which is to some degree a reaction to Goethe's work. These chapters investigatehow the individual's reaction to Italy reflects his view of Germany and the author's role in early 19th-century German society. The conclusion offers a short glance at the continued evolution of the German fascination with Italyin the mid- and late nineteenth century. Gretchen Hachmeister received her Ph.D. in German literature from Yale University.

Book excerpt: In reconstructing the birth and development of the notion of ‘unconscious’, historians of ideas have heavily relied on the Freudian concept of Unbewussten, retroactively projecting the psychoanalytic unconscious over a constellation of diverse cultural experiences taking place in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries between France and Germany. Archaeology of the Unconscious aims to challenge this perspective by adopting an unusual and thought-provoking viewpoint as the one offered by the Italian case from the 1770s to the immediate aftermath of WWI, when Italo Svevo’s La coscienza di Zeno provides Italy with the first example of a ‘psychoanalytic novel’. Italy’s vibrant culture of the long nineteenth century, characterised by the sedimentation, circulation, intersection, and synergy of different cultural, philosophical, and literary traditions, proves itself to be a privileged object of inquiry for an archaeological study of the unconscious; a study whose object is not the alleged ‘origin’ of a pre-made theoretical construct, but rather the stratifications by which that specific construct was assembled. In line with Michel Foucault’s Archéologie du savoir (1969), this volume will analyze the formation and the circulation, across different authors and texts, of a network of ideas and discourses on interconnected themes, including dreams, memory, recollection, desire, imagination, fantasy, madness, creativity, inspiration, magnetism, and somnambulism. Alongside questioning pre-given narratives of the ‘history of the unconscious’, this book will employ the Italian ‘difference’ as a powerful perspective from whence to address the undeveloped potentialities of the pre-Freudian unconscious, beyond uniquely psychoanalytical viewpoints.
