Book It s Not Always Depression

Download or read book It s Not Always Depression written by Hilary Jacobs Hendel and published by Random House. This book was released on 2018-02-06 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fascinating patient stories and dynamic exercises help you connect to healing emotions, ease anxiety and depression, and discover your authentic self. Sara suffered a debilitating fear of asserting herself. Spencer experienced crippling social anxiety. Bonnie was shut down, disconnected from her feelings. These patients all came to psychotherapist Hilary Jacobs Hendel seeking treatment for depression, but in fact none of them were chemically depressed. Rather, Jacobs Hendel found that they’d all experienced traumas in their youth that caused them to put up emotional defenses that masqueraded as symptoms of depression. Jacobs Hendel led these patients and others toward lives newly capable of joy and fulfillment through an empathic and effective therapeutic approach that draws on the latest science about the healing power of our emotions. Whereas conventional therapy encourages patients to talk through past events that may trigger anxiety and depression, accelerated experiential dynamic psychotherapy (AEDP), the method practiced by Jacobs Hendel and pioneered by Diana Fosha, PhD, teaches us to identify the defenses and inhibitory emotions (shame, guilt, and anxiety) that block core emotions (anger, sadness, fear, disgust, joy, excitement, and sexual excitement). Fully experiencing core emotions allows us to enter an openhearted state where we are calm, curious, connected, compassionate, confident, courageous, and clear. In It’s Not Always Depression, Jacobs Hendel shares a unique and pragmatic tool called the Change Triangle—a guide to carry you from a place of disconnection back to your true self. In these pages, she teaches lay readers and helping professionals alike • why all emotions—even the most painful—have value. • how to identify emotions and the defenses we put up against them. • how to get to the root of anxiety—the most common mental illness of our time. • how to have compassion for the child you were and the adult you are. Jacobs Hendel provides navigational tools, body and thought exercises, candid personal anecdotes, and profound insights gleaned from her patients’ remarkable breakthroughs. She shows us how to work the Change Triangle in our everyday lives and chart a deeply personal, powerful, and hopeful course to psychological well-being and emotional engagement.

There are stacks upon stacks of self-help books that will promise you love, happiness, and a fabulous life. Sound familiar? This tongue-in-cheek guide will help you identify the behaviors that make you unhappy and discover how you—and only you—are holding yourself back from a life of contentment. You’ll learn to spot the tried-and-true traps that increase feelings of dissatisfaction, foster a lack of motivation, and detract from our quality of life—as well as ways to avoid them. And I will be living with depression tomorrow. I also assist others who have depression. Here is just some of what I discovered. Life is like a journey but why do you have all kinds of shit happening in your life with so many obstacles in your way, making it hard to move or focus, draining all your energy and throwing you off your path. Why do you feel like this? What the hell is going on? It can be a daunting challenge to say the least. So let me help you navigate through it. Alright, you may think I'm full of crap here.. If you do, I challenge you to throw the book down right now if you think so. To begin, what I found is life is like a journey. So here is a map, a path, a guide to help you navigate your way through all the confusion, and clutter such as endless books written, and advice from many health professionals who have never had depression and have never been through what you may be going through right now yet they are quick to judge, lecture and prescribe. Do they really understand? Here is a way to see through all the noise of personal feel good stories that never last long and advice that may not apply. People assure you are never alone but yet how come you still feel you are? Do you desire instead to not only understand depression better but actually know how to navigate through it and manage it? To start with I did not have a full understanding of depression. Ignorance truly was bliss for me. But it doesn't last. Having a loved one die as a result of depression triggered my own bouts anxiety, stress and into a downfall. It started me on a quest, for over two decades now to learn as much as possible about depression as I could. It was truly necessary to "get it" I had to get it! I realized I became depressed myself! I just had to find my way out. What way was that? I believe it is so important to not just talk the talk but to walk the walk. As a manager, registered nurse and first aid instructor a while back, from my own experiences, and from working in the mental health field now for over 20 years, I have shared my knowledge, skills, and tools acquired with others from preschoolers to seniors citizens. I have also created work shops and delivered numerous presentations. I have travelled to remote work sites to speak with men in their fields, and presenting at first nations communities to speaking in front of hundreds at mental health conferences in large cities, to leading break out sessions and delivering keynotes. Why am I telling you all this? What I am willing to share, I know people want and need to hear. Sometimes we need to hear the same message more than once or twice before it strikes a chord with us and we get that AHA! moment. When will you get your AHA! Moment? With that in mind I purposely laid it all out as if we were taking a trip, picturing it through the eyes and mind of a determined traveller with a specific destination in mind so that it would resonate with you. Alright, let's get started with your journey. What place is the starting point? Where are we heading? How are we getting there? What route are we taking? Who is coming? What are we taking with us? What do we need to leave behind? Are you ready? Grab your map. Let's begin.

Book The Thinking Doing and Believing Workbook

Download or read book The Thinking Doing and Believing Workbook written by Franklin Watkins and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2012-03-27 with total page 135 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much of the popular literature about depression, anxiety and stress says that these conditions are so complicated that we need experts to explain them to us. Some writers say they are diseases; we need medical experts to understand them. Some say they are “disorders” so that, in addition to medical experts we need behavioral experts to tell us how our brain works. Others say we need master teachers to explain the universal truths of Eastern religion before we can fully understand our troubling feelings. Is it really true that our feelings are so complicated that we must rely on scientists and philosophers to explain them to us? This workbook gives a clear answer: NO. “The Thinking, Doing and Believing Workbook” views depression, anxiety and stress as normal human feelings. The problem is not that we have these feelings, it is that we neglect the messages they convey. When we neglect them they disrupt our daily functioning and, if we persist in neglecting them, they can ruin the quality of our lives. The Developmental Approach presented in this workbook notes the many ways we actively contribute to our depressive, anxious and stressful feelings. This is important because if we participate in becoming distressed then we have the option of changing our behavior and replacing dysfunctional habits with more functional ones. This workbook is a map. If you use it, it may: • Help you understand what you have experienced and prepare you for what to expect. • Suggest skills you might want to use as you travel through strange terrain. • Find more creative ways to describe your emotional surroundings. • Orient you to the present moment. • Provide glimpses of recovery so that you will recognize it when you make progress along your way.
