That's all Jessie said. A one-week break to get some perspective before graduation, before she and her boyfriend, Chris, would have to make all the big, scary decisions about their future -- decisions they had been fighting about for weeks. Then, Chris vanishes. The police think he's run away, but Jessie doesn't believe it. Chris is popular and good-looking, about to head off to college on a full-ride baseball scholarship. And he disappeared while going for a run along the river -- the same place where some boys from the rival high school beat him up just three weeks ago. Chris is one of the only black kids in a depressed paper mill town, and Jessie is terrified of what might have happened. As the police are spurred to reluctant action, Jessie and others speak up about the harassment Chris experienced and the danger he could be in. But there are people in Jessie's town who are infuriated by the suggestion that a boy like Chris would be a target of violence. They smear Chris's character and Jessie begins receiving frightening threats. Every Friday since they started dating, Chris has written Jessie a love letter. Now Jessie is writing Chris a letter of her own to tell him everything that's happening while he's gone. As Jessie searches for answers, she must face her fears, her guilt, and a past more complicated than she would like to admit.

Chief Financial Officer Harry Bartlett hasn’t made plans for his impending retirement, but he’s happy for now vacationing on Nantucket Island at the compound of his best and only friend, Ian Bradford, a wealthy wine merchant. But that abruptly changes when he fishes Ian’s body from a Nantucket Island pond full of snapping turtles. Harry volunteers to break the news to Ginny, Ian’s widow, and is dumbfounded when she tells him that she has $20 in her wallet, a maxed-out credit card, and no knowledge of their financial affairs. Harry pays Ginny’s bills while he digs into Ian’s books with his unique financial insights. But the more he digs, the more he discovers Ian’s financial trickery and illegal wine businesses. Teaming up with his new girlfriend, Yvette Truque, a snarky local reporter, Steve Malarkey, and his ex-Mob enforcer relative, Uncle Louie, Harry must wade through a web of lies, deceptions and attacks- tossed overboard from the local ferry, a hit-and-run while bicycling, and attacked by ‘gator attack in Florida - to recover Ian’s money in time to keep Ginny and her two kid from being evicted from their home. Debut author Robert Ainsworth has created an eccentric cast of characters with tongue-in-cheek humor. Harry Bartlett is no flat protagonist, but instead tackles the passions, loneliness, and compulsions that we all face. CONNED is a fast-paced, complex story that keeps your attention to the unexpected end.

Book Deep Down in the Jungle

Download or read book Deep Down in the Jungle written by Roger D. Abrahams and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-04-20 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the growth of interest in folklore, it becomes increasingly evident that the presentation of a collection needs some rationale more than the fact that traditional materials have been collected and properly annotated. Much has been gathered and is now accessible through journals, archives, and lists. If a corpus of lore is not presented in some way, which bears new light on the process of word-of-mouth transmission, on traditional forms or expressions, or on the group among whom the lore was encountered, there is little reason to present it to the public. This work represents an attempt to present a body of folklore collected among one small group of Black Americans in a neighborhood in South Philadelphia. The author's approach toward collection and presentation has been intensive. He has tried to collect "in depth," and to recreate in his presentation the social background in which the lore was found, and to relate the lore with the life and the values of the group. Abraham's work is a departure from any past methods of analyzing folklore, and therefore a description of the author's point of view and his method will be given first. The majority of this work was written before his methodology was actually formulated. However throughout the project û the object was to illuminate as fully as possible the lore of one small group of African Americans from urban Philadelphia. The methodology, which developed, did so because of this objective more than anything else. Though the formulation of this theory may seem ex post facto, it is included because it clarified much during the rewritings of this book, and more importantly, because it will clarify many matters for the lay reader and for the professional folklorist.

Book excerpt: In the late night and early morning hours of July 14th and 15th of 2001, over one hundred people throughout the New York and New Jersey area witnessed a tremendous object moving slowly at a very low altitude. The triangular or diamond-shaped object, as described by several eyewitnesses, bore fifteen to as many as thirty glowing orange balls of light forming somewhat of a V pattern. The object made no sounds of any kind as it hovered in silence over neighboring towns. Some called the event amazing while others called it peaceful and beautiful. It wasn't a group of planes flying in formation or even the aurora borealis. What was it, then? No one seems to have the answer, but someone out there might. It was just another ordinary Saturday night when John was driving home from the shore. Little did he know that it would be a night that he wouldn't soon forget. Within the first year of the incident, John was periodically being tormented by eerie images and visions. For months and months he lost countless hours of sleep from these disturbing dreams. Some of them would last only for a few moments while others would last for several days. John kept silent, telling no one about these accounts as he jotted them down on paper whenever they occurred. Over the course of a couple of years, John has been trying to piece together one of the greatest mysteries that continues to elude him. As the pages were coming together, he realized that stories started slowly unfolding before his eyes. These mind-boggling events would overwhelm his soul daily the more he wrote and read about them. John relentlessly pursues the issue with the result of either taking one step forward closer to the answer or two steps backwards farther away from the truth. This is the first of the chronicles of mystery, death, trust, intrigue, and deceit. John continues to write about the images and visions as long as they appear to him in hopes of one day solving the mystery of the lights over New Jersey.
