Book Young Drivers

Download or read book Young Drivers written by OECD/ECMT Transport Research Centre and published by ECMT. This book was released on 2006-10-04 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The great over-representation of young drivers in crashes and road fatalities is a serious public health problem that exacts an unacceptable toll in human, social and economic terms. Young drivers account for about 27 per cent of driver fatalities across OECD countries, although people in the same age group represent only about 10 per cent of the population. Furthermore, between 20 and 30 per cent of total traffic fatalities result from crashes involving a young driver. Young male drivers' crash fatality rates are as much as three times those of young female drivers, and remain much higher even when adjusted to factor in their higher rates of exposure. In some countries, young males' relative risk, compared to that of other drivers, is increasing. The high levels of young driver risk result principally from factors of inexperience, age, and gender. This risk is aggravated by the circumstances under which many young people drive - young people, especially men, are over-represented in crashes at high speed, at night, with similarly aged passengers, involving alcohol, and often when not wearing seatbelts. There is no single solution. The goal of reduced young driver crashes must be pursued through a combination of countermeasures involving the licensing process, training and learning methods, enforcement, education and communication, and technology.

Book Saving Our Teen Drivers Using Aviation Safety Skills on the Roadways

Download or read book Saving Our Teen Drivers Using Aviation Safety Skills on the Roadways written by John H. Loughry and published by Cunnane Pub. This book was released on 2005-01-01 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How parents can teach their young drivers to detect and avoid the 13 most common vulnerabilities killing teenage drivers. Parents of teenage drivers: Can you name the 13 most common vulnerabilities that will catch your teenage driver or teenage passenger off guard and force them into making a split-second life or death decision? Saving Our Teen Drivers is written by a commercial pilot with over 25 years of flying experience and details how professional aviation training on accident avoidance and the decision making process can help younger drivers detect and avoid the 13 most common causes of teenage driving deaths. 80 percent to 90 percent of teenage driving deaths are attributed to driver decision error. For years, several aviation organisations have dedicated millions of dollars to better educate pilots in reducing pilot decision error. This critical knowledge is transferable to drivers of all ages -- and is especially vital to younger and inexperienced drivers. The book is written to empower parents in educating their children, from a pilot's point of view, on how to reduce their odds of having an accident. Any driver between 15 to 19 years old will directly benefit from this knowledge and experience.

Book Automobile Insurance Road Safety New Drivers Risks Insurance Fraud and Regulation

Download or read book Automobile Insurance Road Safety New Drivers Risks Insurance Fraud and Regulation written by Georges Dionne and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Motor vehicle accidents are still a leading cause of death, even if the trend has somewhat declined over the past 20 years. Indeed, motor vehicle accidents are a significant cause of death in comparison with air and space transport accidents, homicides and even HIV infections, causes which are more often highlighted in the media. As shown in this book, motor vehicle accidents are particularly damaging to very young drivers. The assessment of driving risks is a common concern for road transportation safety and the automobile insurance industry. In both cases, there is an awareness of the great losses resulting from the deaths, injuries and property damage caused by traffic accidents. Research is essential to counteract this public health threat, to assess the success or failure of countermeasures, and to solve the problems it generates in the insurance industry. This book is for people concerned about road crashes (prevention and compensation) and about the insurance problems they pose - namely private and public institutional authorities, consultants, administrators, practitioners, and researchers interested in sharing the authors' experience in this domain. The book presents original contributions related to motor vehicle insurance and road safety. All papers have been evaluated by external referees. Four subjects are covered: 1) Automobile Insurance Pricing, Risks and Asymmetric Information; 2) Insurance Fraud; 3) Young Drivers: Licensing Policies, Evaluation and Risks; and 4) Road Insurance Regulation.

The World Health Organization reports that road traffic injuries are the leading cause of death globally among 15 to 19 year olds. In light of these crash statistics, understanding the teen driver problem remains of paramount public health importance around the world. Book excerpt: There are potential road safety benefits to be obtained from reducing the opportunity for young drivers to be involved in road crashes, that is, by reducing their driving exposure. This report identifies a range of technical and strategic issues which are relevant to a comprehensive discussion of such measures. This is an area in which there are no 'right ' answers : ultimately, an effective, efficient and equitable balance must be reached between a range of competing objectives in order to achieve a consensus policy position on the desirability of exposure reduction measures as one method for reducing your driver crashes. Road accidents. Driving exposure reduction. Zero BAC. Nighttime driving. Occupancy restrictions. Legal drinking age. Motor vehicle power. Licensing age.
