Book The Health and Social Needs of Young Adults with Physical Disabilities

Download or read book The Health and Social Needs of Young Adults with Physical Disabilities written by Andrew Thomas and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1989 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses a topic that has received surprisingly little attention to date--the health and social needs of young adults with physical disabilities. Following an extensive review of the contemporary literature on the subject, the authors report an in-depth study on a large sample of physically disabled 18- to 25-year olds living in two survey areas, one urban and one semirural. The study, which included pediatric examinations and interviews by a social psychologist, found that a large proportion of subjects face social and medical problems, for instance: They have serious health needs that are not being met by the statutory services; they left school with less than adequate skills to enable them to lead an independent adult life; they are without a daytime occupation or attend day centers that are described as "unstimulating" places; they do not receive all the financial benefits to which they are entitled; they are isolated from their peers and lack the social skills to interact with others in a positive and successful way. Parents and guardians were also found to receive little physical or emotional support. These findings underline the need for a better system of providing and coordinating services for this client group, and the authors call for the formation, within each local health authority area, of an "Adult Disability Service" that would have a clinical and planning role in terms of health care and that would act as a linchpin in the coordination of health, educational, social, and voluntary services. Although this work relates specifically to service provision in the United Kingdom, it is felt that the conclusions and recommendations are also broadly applicable to the situation in other countries.

Book Shrinking Cities

Download or read book Shrinking Cities written by Karina Pallagst and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-08-15 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The shrinking city phenomenon is a multidimensional process that affects cities, parts of cities or metropolitan areas around the world that have experienced dramatic decline in their economic and social bases. Shrinkage is not a new phenomenon in the study of cities. However, shrinking cities lack the precision of systemic analysis where other factors now at work are analyzed: the new economy, globalization, aging population (a new population transition) and other factors related to the search for quality of life or a safer environment. This volume places shrinking cities in a global perspective, setting the context for in-depth case studies of cities within Mexico, Brazil, Indonesia, Germany, France, Great Britain, South Korea, Australia, and the USA, which consider specific economic, social, environmental, cultural and land-use issues.

Book Unaccompanied Young Migrants

Download or read book Unaccompanied Young Migrants written by Clayton, Sue and published by Policy Press. This book was released on 2019-01-30 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Taking a multi-disciplinary perspective, and one grounded in human rights, Unaccompanied young migrants explores in-depth the journeys migrant youths take through the UK legal and care systems. Arriving with little agency, what becomes of these children as they grow and assume new roles and identities, only to risk losing legal protection as they reach eighteen? Through international studies and crucially the voices of the young migrants themselves, the book examines the narratives they present and the frameworks of culture and legislation into which they are placed. It challenges existing policy and questions, from a social justice perspective, what the treatment of this group tells us about our systems and the cultural presuppositions on which they depend.

Book Accompanying Young People on Their Spiritual Quest

Download or read book Accompanying Young People on Their Spiritual Quest written by Maxine Green and published by Church House Publishing. This book was released on 1998 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reveals one of the most vital, yet under-researched, areas of youth ministry: how Christian adults can accompany young people in their spiritual quest or journey. For young people, discovering who they are is an exciting and essential quest. Accompanying them in this exploration offers a unique opportunity to enable them to grow in awareness and use their gifts in a creative way for themselves and for the community. Based on the Biblical model of Christ meeting with his disciples on the road to Emmaus, the authors show how we can be alongside young people and help them to develop their own confidence and maturity in their faith. They consider: What is accompanying? What is achieved by successful accompanying programmes? How does peer accompanying work? How leaders can develop accompanying programmes? The authors have developed their understanding of accompanying through real-life stories, and offer practical examples and models of good practice.

Book excerpt: Emergency is a collection of true stories about events where disaster seems imminent. Yet each situation is concluded without loss of life thanks to the skill of the pilots and their crews, whose bravery and resourcefulness have earned them well-deserved commendations. Written by a British Airways First Officer, Stanley Stewart, who has spoken at first hand with the pilots and crews involved in all the incidents recorded here, the book offers a unique insight into what really happened: not the passengers eye-view, which in many cases is already documented, but the view from the flight deck of the aircraft itself.
