Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Oxford and Lafayette County were formed from the Pontotoc Treaty and the Chickasaw Cession of 1832 and the revised agreement in 1834. This treaty with the Chickasaws ceded land that formed 12 counties in North Mississippi. On June 22, 1836, three land speculators, John Martin, John Chisom, and John Craig, donated 50 acres to the Board of Police for the formation of the city of Oxford. The name Oxford was proposed by a nephew of John Craig, Thomas D. Isom, who worked for him in his trading post, in hopes that the state legislature would place the new state university there. Oxford was chartered by the State of Mississippi on May 11, 1837. The University of Mississippi opened its doors in 1848.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “This is the book all of us Mississippi writers, dead and alive, need to read. It is indeed a strange but glorious sensation to see your literary and geographic lineage so beautifully and rigorously explored and valued as it's still being created.” —Kiese Laymon, author of Heavy: An American Memoir In A Place Like Mississippi,award-winning author and Mississippi native W. Ralph Eubanks treats us to a literary tour of the evocative landscapes that have inspired writers in every era. From Faulkner to Wright, Welty to Trethewey, Mississippi has been both a backdrop and a central character in some of the most compelling prose and poetry of modern literature. The journey unfolds on a winding path, touching the muddy Delta, the rolling Hill Country, down to the Gulf Coast, and all points between. In every corner of the state lie the settings that informed hundreds of iconic works. Immersing us in these spaces, Eubanks helps us understand that Mississippi is not only a state but a state of mind. Or as Faulkner is said to have observed, “To understand the world, you must first understand a place like Mississippi.”

Book A Few Steps in the Right Direction

Download or read book A Few Steps in the Right Direction written by Kendrick Savage PhD and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2022-12-23 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I started writing this book years ago during a very difficult moment in graduate school. I didn’t realize it at the time, but writing this book became my way of motivating and encouraging my way through this difficult time. This moment encouraged me to write something that would encourage other people who might also be going through a difficult time. I wanted people to believe in themselves and not to allow the limitations that others place on them or the hardships of life to get the best of them. This book is also my reflection on the power of God and everything He has meant to my life. It is a source of encouragement for anyone and everyone that needs it! This book highlights moments where I had a choice of going either left or right, backwards or forwards, to listen or not to listen, or to give up or keep going. These are inspirational moments and moments of impact. These are the moments I call A Few Steps in the Right Direction! We all have these moments. Moments that somehow leave a lasting impact on the direction of our lives. Some come out of nowhere, whereas others we see coming like headlights on a dark road. Nevertheless, if handled carefully, these moments can serve as a few steps in the right direction if we allow them to. So, in this book, I aim to share some of those moments with you from my life and what that has meant for my journey. I hope it blesses you as much as it blessed me.

Book Larry Brown

Download or read book Larry Brown written by Jean W. Cash and published by Univ. Press of Mississippi. This book was released on 2011-07-20 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Larry Brown (1951–2004) was unique among writers who started their careers in the late twentieth century. Unlike most of them—his friends Clyde Edgerton, Jill McCorkle, Rick Bass, and Kaye Gibbons, among others—he was neither a product of a writing program, nor did he teach at one. In fact, he did not even attend college. His innate talent, his immersion in the life of north Mississippi, and his determination led him to national success. Drawing on excerpts from numerous letters and material from interviews with family members and friends, Larry Brown: A Writer's Life is the first biography of a landmark southern writer. Jean W. Cash explores the cultural milieu of Oxford, Mississippi, and the writers who influenced Brown, including William Faulkner, Flannery O'Connor, Harry Crews, and Cormac McCarthy. She covers Brown's history in Mississippi, the troubled family in which he grew up, and his boyhood in Tula and Yocona, Mississippi, and in Memphis, Tennessee. She relates stories from Brown's time in the Marines, his early married life—which included sixteen years as an Oxford fireman—and what he called his “apprenticeship” period, the eight years during which he was teaching himself to write publishable fiction. The book examines Brown's years as a writer: the stories and novels he wrote, his struggles to acclimate himself to the fame his writing brought him, and his many trips outside Yocona, where he spent the last thirty years of his life. The book concludes with a discussion of his posthumous fame, including the publication of A Miracle of Catfish, the novel he had nearly completed just before his death. Brown's cadre of fans will relish this comprehensive portrait of the man and his work.
