Book The Longings and Limits of Global Citizenship Education

Download or read book The Longings and Limits of Global Citizenship Education written by Jeffrey S. Dill and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-07-18 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the world seemingly gets smaller and smaller, schools around the globe are focusing their attention on expanding the consciousness and competencies of their students to prepare them for the conditions of globalization. Global citizenship education is rapidly growing in popularity because it captures the longings of so many—to help make a world of prosperity, universal benevolence, and human rights in the midst of globalization’s varied processes of change. This book offers an empirical account from the perspective of teachers and classrooms, based on a qualitative study of ten secondary schools in the United States and Asia that explicitly focus on making global citizens. Global citizenship in these schools has two main elements, both global competencies (economic skills) and global consciousness (ethical orientations) that proponents hope will bring global prosperity and peace. However, many of the moral assumptions of global citizenship education are more complex and contradict these goals, and are just as likely to have the unintended consequence of reinforcing a more particular Western individualism. While not arguing against global citizenship education per se, the book argues that in its current forms it has significant limits that proponents have not yet acknowledged, which may very well undermine it in the long run.

Book Knowledge Wisdom The Peaceful Path to Liberation

Download or read book Knowledge Wisdom The Peaceful Path to Liberation written by Lama Yeshe and published by Lama Yeshe Wisdom Archive. This book was released on 2023-01-10 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What I’m saying is that you should have perfect determination, knowing that understanding knowledge-wisdom is the only solution to problems, the only source of happiness and joy. That is what we call Dharma. —Lama Yeshe This first volume of collected teachings is drawn from teachings given by Lama Yeshe in the 1970s and 1980s, when he and Lama Zopa Rinpoche traveled the world, teaching extensively. Lama Yeshe consistently encouraged students to recognize and develop their limitless potential, and his dynamic teaching style means that these teachings are as relevant and accessible today as when first taught. In Part 1 of this book, Lama Yeshe advises how we can transform our lives by developing warm-heartedness and “knowledge-wisdom,” while maintaining a relaxed attitude to our practice. The teachings in Part 1 are edited by Nicholas Ribush and include new material published for the first time. Part 2 is edited by Uldis Balodis and features three discourses given by Lama Yeshe at the sixteenth Kopan meditation course, Nepal, in 1983. In these final teachings at Kopan, Lama offers essential advice on how to practice Dharma in the West. Excerpts from these discourses have been previously published in the ebook series, The Enlightened Experience: Volumes 1–3, online at Lama Yeshe Wisdom Archive and in other publications including Mandala magazine. We acknowledge the kindness of Ven. Tenzin Drachom and students in sponsoring the production of this book.

Book The Third Pillar

Download or read book The Third Pillar written by Raghuram Rajan and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2020-02-25 with total page 466 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Revised and updated Shortlisted for the Financial Times/McKinsey Business Book of the Year Award From one of the most important economic thinkers of our time, a brilliant and far-seeing analysis of the current populist backlash against globalization. Raghuram Rajan, distinguished University of Chicago professor, former IMF chief economist, head of India's central bank, and author of the 2010 FT-Goldman-Sachs Book of the Year Fault Lines, has an unparalleled vantage point onto the social and economic consequences of globalization and their ultimate effect on our politics. In The Third Pillar he offers up a magnificent big-picture framework for understanding how these three forces--the state, markets, and our communities--interact, why things begin to break down, and how we can find our way back to a more secure and stable plane. The "third pillar" of the title is the community we live in. Economists all too often understand their field as the relationship between markets and the state, and they leave squishy social issues for other people. That's not just myopic, Rajan argues; it's dangerous. All economics is actually socioeconomics - all markets are embedded in a web of human relations, values and norms. As he shows, throughout history, technological phase shifts have ripped the market out of those old webs and led to violent backlashes, and to what we now call populism. Eventually, a new equilibrium is reached, but it can be ugly and messy, especially if done wrong. Right now, we're doing it wrong. As markets scale up, the state scales up with it, concentrating economic and political power in flourishing central hubs and leaving the periphery to decompose, figuratively and even literally. Instead, Rajan offers a way to rethink the relationship between the market and civil society and argues for a return to strengthening and empowering local communities as an antidote to growing despair and unrest. Rajan is not a doctrinaire conservative, so his ultimate argument that decision-making has to be devolved to the grass roots or our democracy will continue to wither, is sure to be provocative. But even setting aside its solutions, The Third Pillar is a masterpiece of explication, a book that will be a classic of its kind for its offering of a wise, authoritative and humane explanation of the forces that have wrought such a sea change in our lives.

Book Our Own Way in This Part of the World

Download or read book Our Own Way in This Part of the World written by Kwasi Konadu and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2019-04-15 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kofi Dᴐnkᴐ was a blacksmith and farmer, as well as an important healer, intellectual, spiritual leader, settler of disputes, and custodian of shared values for his Ghanaian community. In Our Own Way in This Part of the World Kwasi Konadu centers Dᴐnkᴐ's life story and experiences in a communography of Dᴐnkᴐ's community and nation from the late nineteenth century through the end of the twentieth, which were shaped by historical forces from colonial Ghana's cocoa boom to decolonization and political and religious parochialism. Although Dᴐnkᴐ touched the lives of thousands of citizens and patients, neither he nor they appear in national or international archives covering the region. Yet his memory persists in his intellectual and healing legacy, and the story of his community offers a non-national, decolonized example of social organization structured around spiritual forces that serves as a powerful reminder of the importance for scholars to take their cues from the lived experiences and ideas of the people they study.

Book Community and the World

Download or read book Community and the World written by Torry D. Dickinson and published by Nova Publishers. This book was released on 2003 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of articles and artwork examines inclusive community development education, which engages members of diverse, often marginalised groups in research and education for social change. Community development education is the democratic and scholarly practice of involving everyday people, from all backgrounds, in the research-based process of designing, starting, and evaluating programs that meet people's needs. The book's varied contributions serve as personalised invitations to: work with others as equals, join democratic social projects, talk to people "you wouldn't have talked to before", value self-education, recognise contributions made by unpaid workers, invent ways to be non-violent, challenge passivity, and use democracy as a way to improve communities and the world. Addressing culture to science, chapters contain work carried out by younger and older scholarly activists in: Women's Studies, anti-racist and anti-colonial studies, history, the social sciences, global studies, community studies, media studies, horticulture, philosophy, education, co-operatives and community service, social-movement organising, project development, political art, and popular music. Each chapter contains diverse themes, comes from multidisciplinary research, and speaks to the subject of education for social change in individual ways. Contributions focus on popular education, self-education, self-defined group education, group-defined university projects, and scholarly activism in local to global movements.

Book You re History

Book excerpt: This book arose out of a challenge. The challenge was made by Bob Geldof to the British academic and historian Michelle Brown. Pop singers raise huge sums of money for Band Aid and touch the hearts of people from all walks of life. But to give money can be an easy way out. How does the so called intellientsia respond with their minds(not just their hearts and pockets) to the appalling disparities in the conditions of members of the human race. This a challenge that a number of notable and gifted people have responded to enthusiastically. They range from John Simpson and Martin Bell to Former President Mary Robinson and the noted US feminist intellectual Charlotte Bunch. Other noted authors include Sir David Ramsbothom, Ricardo Navarro, Founder of the Friends of the Earth and Simon Counsell, Director of The Rainforest Foundation. Ultimately the purpose of this book is to make people think and connect wires, to encourage them to question their own place within the world , to acknowledge personal and collective responsibility and to discuss a range of situations and issues that have been changed by individuals. The book is also published to coimcide with Britian's Presidenct of the G8 and EU and ther associated drive to focus on issues of global social justice through the newly established Commission for Africa.
