Book The Fortean Influence on Science Fiction

Download or read book The Fortean Influence on Science Fiction written by Tanner F. Boyle and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2020-11-30 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Charles Fort was an American researcher from the early twentieth century who cataloged reports of unexplained phenomena he found in newspapers and science journals. A minor bestseller with a cult appeal, Fort's work was posthumously republished in the pulp science fiction magazine Astounding Stories in 1934. His idiosyncratic books fascinated, scared, and entertained readers, many of them authors and editors of science fiction. Fort's work prophesied the paranormal mainstays of SF literature to come: UFOs, poltergeists, strange disappearances, cryptids, ancient mysteries, unexplained natural phenomena, and everything in between. Science fiction authors latched on to Fort's topics and hypotheses as perfect fodder for SF stories. Writers like Arthur C. Clarke, Philip K. Dick, Robert Heinlein, H.P. Lovecraft, and others are examined in this exploration of Fortean science fiction--a genre that borrows from the reports and ideas of Fort and others who saw the possible science-fictional nature of our reality.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: He's forbidden in every meaning of the word. But is that enough to keep him away? It all started in Vegas. Now, I know what you’re thinking... What happens in Vegas is supposed to stay in the city of sin. Normally, I’d be inclined to agree. Until Lincoln Moore walks into my life. On paper, we mix as well as oil and water. He’s confident. Commanding. Successful. Master of his universe. I’m a hot mess, barely holding on as I struggle to balance my job, finally finishing college, and keeping my mother sober. But when the lights go out nothing else matters. Until I learn the truth of who Lincoln Moore actually is. Sure, I probably should have put the pieces together sooner, but our early days haven’t exactly been filled with riveting philosophical discussions about the meaning of life, if you know what I mean. That still doesn’t diminish the fact he could lose everything by being with me. But is that enough to keep us apart? Or is what we have worth the risk? There’s only one way to find out. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This masterful translation of a recent Bolivian novel, En el pais del silencio, transports us to a mysterious, silent, and unfamiliar land where astonishing truths are placed within our grasp. Like a parabola, this amazing story begins and ends in the same place on the same day in the life of a single persona with three interior entities: Jursafú, The Other, and The Dead Man. By portraying them as separate, Urzagasti accentuates their interrelatedness, for one character cannot grow without the others, nor can any one of them move toward an ultimate goal without the experience and knowledge of the other two. The author’s mature and thoroughly Bolivian style is marked by a synthesis of poetic and novelistic techniques which blend perfectly the indigenous and European voices of his ancestral home.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From one of the writers of the twentieth-century Native American Literary Renaissance comes a remarkable tale about how to acknowledge the past and take a chance on the future. Rooted in tribal-world consciousness, That Guy Wolf Dancing is the story of a young tribal wolf-man becoming a part of his not-sonatural world of non-tribal people. Twenty-something Philip Big Pipe disappears from an unsettled life he can hardly tolerate and ends up in an off-reservation town. When he leaves, he doesn’t tell anyone where he is going or what his plans, if he has any, might be. Having never taken himself too seriously, he now faces a world that feels very foreign to him. As he struggles to adapt to the modern universe, Philip, ever a “wolf dancer,” must improvise, this time to a sound others provide for him. Like the wolf, Philip sometimes feels hunted, outrun, verging on extinction. Only by moving rhythmically in a dissident, dangerous, and iconic world can Philip Big Pipe let go of the past and craft a new future.
