Book Cultural Citizenship and Popular Culture

Download or read book Cultural Citizenship and Popular Culture written by Joke Hermes and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-09-27 with total page 155 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written in an accessible and engaging style, this book uses a series of case studies to show how popular media are important to us, as a source of pleasure and entertainment, but also in communicating about the world with others. Social media platforms have changed how we talk about what we like and dislike in our popular media use. 'Cultural citizenship' shows how these discussions speak to 'belonging', to what we feel our rights and responsibilities are in today's polarized world. Cultural Citizenship and Popular Culture is based on audience-led research and does not privilege textual analysis as a starting point for taking popular media use's measure. Instead, it offers research tools to listen to others. This book offers scholars and students of media and creative industries a means to understand their professional position as one in which they engage with rather than assume to know what users of popular cultural texts and products think and feel.

Book Journeys of Embodiment at the Intersection of Body and Culture

Download or read book Journeys of Embodiment at the Intersection of Body and Culture written by Niva Piran and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2017-09-15 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Journeys of Embodiment at the Intersection of Body and Culture: The Developmental Theory of Embodiment describes an innovative developmental and feminist theory—understanding embodiment—to provide a new perspective on the interactions between the social environment of girls and young women of different social locations and their embodied experience of engagement with the world around them. The book proposes that the multitude of social experiences described by girls and women shape their body experiences via three core pathways: experiences in the physical domain, experiences in the mental domain and experiences related directly to social power. The book is structured around each developmental stage in the body journey of girls and young women, as influenced by their experience of embodiment. The theory builds on the emergent constructs of ‘embodiment’ and ‘body journey,’ and the key social experiences which shape embodiment throughout development and adolescence—from agency, functionality and passion during early childhood to restriction, shame and varied expressions of self-harm during and following puberty. By addressing not only adverse experiences at the intersection of gender, social class, ethnocultural grouping, resilience and facilitative social factors, the theory outlines constructive pathways toward transformation. It contends that both protective and risk factors are organized along these three pathways, with the positive and negative aspects conceptualized as Physical Freedom (vs. Corseting), Mental Freedom (vs. Corseting), and Social Power (vs. Disempowerment and Disconnection). Examines the construct of embodiment and its theoretical development Explores the social experiences that shape girls throughout development Recognizes the importance of the body and sexuality Includes narratives by girls and young women on how they inhabit their bodies Invites scholars and health professionals to critically reflect on the body journeys of diverse girls and women Addresses the advancement of feminist, social critical and psychological theory, as well as implications to practice—both therapy and health promotion

Book excerpt: It was just as it had been the last time I saw it. Dark, desolate and in dire need of repair. Still uninhabited and still drawing me like a moth to the flame. After having seen Luke at the cafe, I needed a moment to clear my head and think of where I had seen that face. I put the kickstand down in front of the old brick entrance and strolled to the front steps, which were in disrepair, to sit as if I owned the place, looking out across the street where the houses on all sides stood straight and prominent, with more beauty than functionality, I was certain. I quit my thoughts of Luke in exchange for the moment, needing to visualize this house on canvas."

Book excerpt: From its origins in the University of Birmingham’s then Institute of Education in 1948, Educational Review has emerged as a leading international journal for generic educational research. Seventy-five years on, Mapping the Field presents a detailed account of education theory and research, policy, and practice through the lens of key articles published in the journal over this timespan. Volume II opens with Part I, a collection of articles examining teachers’ job (dis/) satisfaction and stress, and the gendered composition of the teaching workforce. Articles in Part II trace a shift in academic focus from schools seen as families/communities, to the parent-school relationship. The concepts of inclusion and equality—and strategies for their fulfilment in education—are interrogated in Part III. The volume concludes with Part IV, in which diverse identities in the education field are represented. Curated and introduced by the editors, the articles included in both volumes of Mapping the Field represent a careful selection from the work of scholars whose ideas have been, and continue to be, influential in the field of education. Overall, this major text covers a wide range of topics and offers original insights into educational policy, provision, processes, and practice from around the world.
