Book excerpt: For almost a thousand years, the One Nation has been at peace, wiser for the mistakes of The Fortunate—the oppressive, power-mad faction of humanity who once claimed that the earth could sustain us all, supporting their abuses and greed without crumbling, forever. They were wrong and the price was paid. In those perilous, long-ago days, the Lion of the Forson, born of The Lesser—those forced to serve The Fortunate in their selfish endeavours—drew upon deep powers to reshape the Earth, and the One Nation was created, on a foundation of freedom, responsibility, and a respect for the world and all living things. The Fortunate were trapped beneath the cold and ice of Heldig Fengsel, a prison that prophecy warns will fall once a thousand years have passed. Now, with the release of the Fortunate fast approaching, the descendants of The Lesser anxiously await the return of the Lion and her Pride, which the prophecy says will occur when they are needed once more, as the last line of defence against forces of darkness that threaten to tip the world back into subjugation and destruction.

Download or read book Hurts So Good written by Leigh Cowart and published by PublicAffairs. This book was released on 2021-09-14 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An exploration of why people all over the world love to engage in pain on purpose--from dominatrices, religious ascetics, and ultramarathoners to ballerinas, icy ocean bathers, and sideshow performers Masochism is sexy, human, reviled, worshipped, and can be delightfully bizarre. Deliberate and consensual pain has been with us for millennia, encompassing everyone from Black Plague flagellants to ballerinas dancing on broken bones to competitive eaters choking down hot peppers while they cry. Masochism is a part of us. It lives inside workaholics, tattoo enthusiasts, and all manner of garden variety pain-seekers. At its core, masochism is about feeling bad, then better—a phenomenon that is long overdue for a heartfelt and hilarious investigation. And Leigh Cowart would know: they are not just a researcher and science writer—they’re an inveterate, high-sensation seeking masochist. And they have a few questions: Why do people engage in masochism? What are the benefits and the costs? And what does masochism have to say about the human experience? By participating in many of these activities themselves, and through conversations with psychologists, fellow scientists, and people who seek pain for pleasure, Cowart unveils how our minds and bodies find meaning and relief in pain—a quirk in our programming that drives discipline and innovation even as it threatens to swallow us whole.

She sees in him a kindred and damaged spirit, a man who can understand her crimes, heal her scars, and love her. Dylan is reclaiming herself from a past of brutal injustices inflicted by a world of misogyny and power. Detective Carver is dealing with his own troubled history: an elusive and violent father. My Detective is a story of obsession set against vengeance and prayers of forgiveness in a city that is as cruel as it is fantastical. It captures modern Los Angeles in real time, an eerie glide through the imagination, where winds gust high above the San Gabriel Mountains and neighborhoods stretch toward the ocean like the flash and tremor of a dream. With assistance from their comrades in arms, twin brothers Edouard and Alton—presumed by many to be the prophesized Hammer and Spear— will have to survive mortal danger around every turn as they endeavor to prepare their people, and the Lion of Forson, for a battle that threatens to end their way of life and change the face of the One Nation forever. Download or read book Brenton Plays 2 written by Howard Brenton and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2013-12-04 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Howard Brenton is one of Britain's best-known and most controversial dramatists The Romans in Britain was the play that brought calls to bring back censorship when it was first staged at the National in 1980. It conjures up "an era that is culturally as well as historically remote which is a notoriously difficult task, but Mr Brenton acheives it with great skill and effect...a very good play indeed." In The Thirteenth Night: "He sets the characters of Shakespeare to find the elements in the British character which could transform an Englishman into a Stalin, and closes in on his creation with an overall wit to match his horror" (The Times). The Genius "is teeming with memorable stage pictures, and bristling with Brenton's very best writing: flinty, impassioned, explosive" (Financial Times). In Bloody Poetry "Brenton is doing something markedly ambitious in this phantasmagoric play. He is celebrating the idea of the committed artist who seeks to stir and provoke sullen, defeated bourgeois England. At the same time, with clear-eyed honesty, he shows how difficult it is to upset the moral order" (The Guardian). Greenland is "on the one hand a cry of disillusionment with established political forms, on the other it is full of typically lively Brentonesque satire and lampoons...Brenton's message is a welcome antidote to the madness in which we all now seem to be living and a sharp blast against patriarchy as well as other attendant woes" (City Limits).

Download or read book Bond Plays 6 written by Edward Bond and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2013-12-10 with total page 443 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Plays Six includes some of the most acclaimed work of Edward Bond, one of Britain's greatest living contemporary dramatists, who is widely studied by schools and colleges. The collection includes a commentary by the author. The collection includes The War Plays and Choruses from After the Assasinations. In The War Plays (Red Black and Ignorant, The Tin Can People, Great Peace): "Bond particularises daunting themes and subjects, but examines them within the context of every day life. His platform is a trilogy of plays that deal with the aftermath of a nuclear holocaust. The first, - a quick, telling chronicle of a life destroyed before it ever got lived - puts forth Bond's notions of contemporary cultural corruption and conditioning. In play two the demoralised inheritors of a ravaged earth try to rationalise an existence predicated on death. The third play enlarges the issues by focussing on a post-apocalyptic Mother Courage for whom schizoid suffering becomes a survival technique." (Time Out). In Choruses From After The Assassinations, Bond forecasts questions fifty years into the future, in an age of escalating militarism. Edward Bond is "a great playwright - many, particularly in continental Europe, would say the greatest living English playwright" (Independent)

Download or read book God s Lecture written by John L. Bowman and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2005-09 with total page 119 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: God is pissed. In the beginning, God created heaven, earth, and all the animals. They were part of a grand and perfect design. It worked well, and God was pleased. Then one of the animals, man, started altering the design, irritating God. God gave man, unlike the other animals, a little cleverness, which has caused him to jump the tracks. Using this cleverness, man has conceived, created, and implemented incredible unnatural and convoluted ideas, constructs, and systems. These entities are upsetting God's patterns of nature. Man is now doing things God never intended. This has not only made God's plans go haywire but also threatens man himself. God is in high dudgeon because man's imagination is debauching his perfect world. To make matters worse, man audaciously blames God for a world gone crazy. God has patiently endured man's accusations but now intends to set him straight on the true nature of things and explain how he has screwed things up. This is God's lecture, and if man has any inkling of what is good for him, he will listen.
Download or read book A 52 Hertz Whale written by Bill Sommer and published by Carolrhoda Lab ™. This book was released on 2015-09-01 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "It appears to be the only individual emitting a call at this frequency and hence, has been described as the world's loneliest whale."—Wikipedia So here's how it all starts: James, a high school freshman, is worried that the young humpback whale he tracks online has separated from its pod. So naturally he emails Darren, the twentysomething would-be filmmaker who volunteered in James's special education program back in middle school. Of course, Darren is useless on the subject of whales, but he's got nothing but time, given that the only girl he could ever love dumped him. And fetching lattes for his boss has him close to walking out on his movie dream and boomeranging right back to his childhood bedroom. So why not reply to a random email from Whale Boy? Predictably, this thread of emails leads to a lot of bizarre stuff, including a yeti suit, drug smuggling, widows, a major documentary filmmaking opportunity, first love, a graveyard, damaged echolocation, estranged siblings, restraining orders, choke holds, emergency dentistry...and then maybe ends with something like understanding. See, it turns out that the thing that binds people together most is their fear that nothing binds them together at all.
