Book Street Sex Workers Discourse

Download or read book Street Sex Workers Discourse written by Jill McCracken and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Incorporating the voices and insights of street sex workers through personal interviews, this monograph argues that the material conditions of many street workers — the physical environments they live in and their effects on the workers’ bodies, identities, and spirits — are represented, reproduced, and entrenched in the language surrounding their work. As an ethnographic case study of a local system that can be extrapolated to other subcultures and the construction of identities, this book disrupts some of the more prevalent academic and lay understandings about street prostitution by providing a thorough analysis of the material conditions surrounding street work and their connection to discourse. McCracken offers an explanation of how constructions can be made differently in order to achieve representations that are generated by the marginalized populations themselves, while placing responsibility for this marginalization on the society in which these people live.

Book excerpt: This book runs on the belief that we are not what we are outside, and we are what our inner callings are. So, what do we do when we hear them? I don’t know about others, but I pour them on the LOVE slate. The book has a collection of 21 poems I wrote, each in one go because once your heart is overwhelmed with emotions, it pours heavily and nonstop. This book plays around the emotions of love, craving the loved ones, fear that loves brings in, its worth, and feelings that are complimentary to love. I hope the readers can feel the essence and finds an instant connection. With each poem, I tried to be honest and trustworthy to express what I went through or felt throughout. While wearing my emotions on my sleeves, I have written each piece of mine based on these inner callings. I hope it stirs your inner callings too.

In this memoir, she describes growing up in a respectable, middle-class, Californian household where she was introduced to alcohol at a young age. She had her first taste of alcohol at age nine and first experienced being drunk at age fourteen. During her twenties, Gross tells how she continued to drink and experiment with drugs despite her rigorous studies. With her compulsive personality, excessive drinking and reckless use of pills became a constant part of everyday life. In 2004, with her physicians career in jeopardy and her family life unraveling, Gross was forced to seek help. Recovery was her next step, but it was not easy. She narrates how it took her nearly ten months to realize that recovery involved surrender of the old self to the will of God. Book Things Church Girls Don t Talk About

Download or read book Things Church Girls Don t Talk About written by Susan Sieweke and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2012-06 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Things Church Girls Don't Talk About is a comical, yet poignant, story of a young church girl and her mother in search of true faith amidst a sea of toxic religion and eccentric Southern characters. Meet Mama Careen whose sass gets her into trouble when she announces her husband's adultery at his surprise birthday party. Enjoy the antics of her sister, Justine, who gets tipsy and does a "tell off" to her brother-in-law's bow-legged mistress at his funeral. Sympathize with Maggie as she tries to forgive and forget her cold, Irish father. Scoff at the narcissism of Jimmy Ray, a quirky preacher with a PH.D-a Pentecostal Hair Do. If you have a bone to pick with religion, or even if you don't, you will be wooed by this charming and powerful tale of how mercy triumphs over judgment. Excerpts from THINGS CHURCH GIRLS DON'T TALK ABOUT... Maggie McBride on Southern sayings: "...and for your information, a Southern woman can say anything about anyone no matter how cutting or evil if she just follows it up with 'bless her heart, ' or something similar." "Don't go repeating this, but Mrs. Johnson's loose daughters, Babs and Lola, became Porn whores-bless their hearts." "Violet's thighs looked like a tub full of cottage cheese in that bathing suit-bless her heart." "Mrs. Murphy's lusty cousins, Beebe and Hortence, are both living in sin-bless their hearts." I think you get the point. ********** Careen McBride and her unique, attention seeking suicide note: Dearest Martin, Night and day, I have been down on my knees praying to God that you would leave that butt-ugly Ellen woman and come back to me and Maggie. But no, my prayers did nothing but hit the ceiling. You are still with that home wrecker who is not worth the bullets it would take to blow her brains out. Since you've been gone, I feel that there is nothing left for me to live for and I might as well just go to be with our dear Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. In the event that I get up my nerve and decide to take my life, send our Maggie to live with my rich sister, Justine, if you and your bow-legged bitch don't want her. That way, at least one of us can live in Mountain Brook. Sincerely, Careen

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The stories you read change you. But what if those stories were literally magic?
