Book excerpt: The definitive career guide for grad students, adjuncts, post-docs and anyone else eager to get tenure or turn their Ph.D. into their ideal job Each year tens of thousands of students will, after years of hard work and enormous amounts of money, earn their Ph.D. And each year only a small percentage of them will land a job that justifies and rewards their investment. For every comfortably tenured professor or well-paid former academic, there are countless underpaid and overworked adjuncts, and many more who simply give up in frustration. Those who do make it share an important asset that separates them from the pack: they have a plan. They understand exactly what they need to do to set themselves up for success. They know what really moves the needle in academic job searches, how to avoid the all-too-common mistakes that sink so many of their peers, and how to decide when to point their Ph.D. toward other, non-academic options. Karen Kelsky has made it her mission to help readers join the select few who get the most out of their Ph.D. As a former tenured professor and department head who oversaw numerous academic job searches, she knows from experience exactly what gets an academic applicant a job. And as the creator of the popular and widely respected advice site The Professor is In, she has helped countless Ph.D.’s turn themselves into stronger applicants and land their dream careers. Now, for the first time ever, Karen has poured all her best advice into a single handy guide that addresses the most important issues facing any Ph.D., including: -When, where, and what to publish -Writing a foolproof grant application -Cultivating references and crafting the perfect CV -Acing the job talk and campus interview -Avoiding the adjunct trap -Making the leap to nonacademic work, when the time is right The Professor Is In addresses all of these issues, and many more.

Book Little Panic

Download or read book Little Panic written by Amanda Stern and published by Grand Central Publishing. This book was released on 2018-06-19 with total page 431 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the vein of bestselling memoirs about mental illness like Andrew Solomon's Noonday Demon, Sarah Hepola's Blackout, and Daniel Smith's Monkey Mind comes a gorgeously immersive, immediately relatable, and brilliantly funny memoir about living life on the razor's edge of panic. The world never made any sense to Amanda Stern--how could she trust time to keep flowing, the sun to rise, gravity to hold her feet to the ground, or even her own body to work the way it was supposed to? Deep down, she knows that there's something horribly wrong with her, some defect that her siblings and friends don't have to cope with. Growing up in the 1970s and 80s in New York, Amanda experiences the magic and madness of life through the filter of unrelenting panic. Plagued with fear that her friends and family will be taken from her if she's not watching-that her mother will die, or forget she has children and just move away-Amanda treats every parting as her last. Shuttled between a barefoot bohemian life with her mother in Greenwich Village, and a sanitized, stricter world of affluence uptown with her father, Amanda has little she can depend on. And when Etan Patz disappears down the block from their MacDougal Street home, she can't help but believe that all her worst fears are about to come true. Tenderly delivered and expertly structured, Amanda Stern's memoir is a document of the transformation of New York City and a deep, personal, and comedic account of the trials and errors of seeing life through a very unusual lens.

I have everything I could ever dream of, except my billionaire father's respect. When one of my infamous pranks lands me in hot water, my old man finally puts his foot down and cuts me off. Overnight, I lose everything—my allowance, my sweet home in a California mansion, even my place at college. With hot Anya in the rearview mirror, I head to Redcrest to start over. Here, on my new college campus, I can keep my identity a secret, maintaining a low profile away from the media that's been longing to see my downfall. Out of the blue, Anya walks into my class. Turns out, not only do I still want her, the seductive siren I met at a small town bar is my teacher this semester. Book I Ain t Much Baby But I m All I ve Got

Download or read book I Ain t Much Baby But I m All I ve Got written by Jess Lair, Ph.D. and published by Fawcett. This book was released on 1995-03-01 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "What are some of the discoveries I have made? I found I needed people because I needed the love they could give me. I found that love was something I did. I found that the way I showed people my need and love for them was to tell how it was with me in my deepest heart. I came to feel that was the most loving thing I could do for anyone -- tell them how it was with me and share my imperfections with them. When I did this, most people came back at me with what was deep within them. This was love coming to me. And the more I had coming to me, the more I had to give away. I ain't much, baby -- but I'm all I've got." From his experience comes "I Ain't Much, Baby -- But I'm All I've Got." Lair originally wrote this book for his students, but when it gained widespread popularity he rewrote it for publication. It is a book meant to help people share in the success of finding themselves.

You'll also discover: Strategies for creating human-centered care and joy, in which thoughts, actions, and decisions are drawn from within the school community Techniques for creating student-centered experiences within standards-based classrooms How to raise the level of family involvement in your students' education and improve communication between family and staff An essential blueprint for K-12 educators, school support staff, and school administrators, Teaching Fiercely will also earn a place on the bookshelves of education policymakers, researchers, and students.

Book Non Linear Perspectives on Teacher Development

Download or read book Non Linear Perspectives on Teacher Development written by Kathryn J. Strom and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-03-21 with total page 512 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the multifaceted complexity of teaching, dominant perspectives conceptualize teacher development in linear, dualistic, transactional, human-centric ways. The authors in this book offer non-linear alternatives by drawing on a continuum of complex perspectives, including CHAT, complexity theory, actor network theory, indigenous studies, rhizomatics, and posthuman/neomaterialisms. The chapters included here illuminate how different ways of thinking can help us better examine how teachers learn (relationally, with human, material, and discursive elements) and offer ways to understand the entangled nature of the relationship between that learning and what emerges in classroom instructional practice. They also present situated illustrations of what those entanglements or assemblages look like in the preservice, induction, and inservice phases, from early childhood to secondary settings, and across multiple continents. Authors provide evidence that research on teacher development should focus on process as much (if not more than) product and show that complexity perspectives can support forward-thinking, assets-based pedagogies. Methodologically, the chapters encourage conceptual creativity and expansion, and support an argument for blurring theory-method and normalising methodological hybridity. Ultimately, this book provides conceptual, theoretical, and methodological tools to understand current educational conditions in late capitalism and imagine otherwise. It was originally published as a special issue of the journal Professional Development in Education.

Book Goldoon and Professor

Download or read book Goldoon and Professor written by Bahman Shahzadi and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2003 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A stash of historic letters is the starting point for this intimate view of life in pre-Revolutionary Iran. The authors, Jackie and Bahman Shahzadi, use excerpts of their old letters to peer into the past and examine the relationship that became a 35-year marriage. For young, American-born Jackie, the challenges of adapting to life in Iran were complicated by marrying into Zoroastrianism, a religion forbidding both conversion and interfaith marriage. Their life in Iran spans the political life of the Shah from coronation to overthrow. This conversational narrative chronicles the effects of these outside influences on this bicultural union, including, ultimately, exile from Iran in the midst of the Revolution.
