Book excerpt: You Can Come And Celebrate With Me: A Collection of Christmas Stories had a very humble beginning back in 1989. It started in the living room of my brother Eric and his wife Nancy's small apartment in Edwardsville, Illinois. Eric had given the Disney puppet, Figment of Imagination, as a gift to our daughter, Kiersten. Figment, the puppet, is a storyteller and he tried his best with a little help to entertain Kiersten, her slightly older cousins, Emily and Caitlin, and her one younger cousin, Ariel, for a good portion of the afternoon on Thanksgiving Day. Figment told silly stories of pirates, and monsters, and just about anything these four imaginative girls requested. From these stories came the idea for A Christmas Adventure (an illustrated story about a group of good hearted Mississippi River pirates which will appear in another volume) and from that story a family Christmas tradition began. The stories are simple. They are, or at least they began as children's stories, but like children they have grown in concept and content as the children have grown. The underlying premise of each story has some connection to an event or events that happened during that year - as the years have passed, many of these premises have unexpectedly remained timeless. The stories might be about sea turtles, or hurricanes, or the Civil War, yet each has a common theme. A theme that goes beyond Christmas, or maybe one that is, and has always been Christmas. They talk of caring and of sharing. They talk of hope, of joy, and of love. They are truly a pleasure to write, and hopefully as much of a pleasure to read. I hope that you enjoy this simple collection of Christmas stories.

Book A Simple Christmas

Download or read book A Simple Christmas written by Mike Huckabee and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2012-11-06 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Every Christmas, I still think about that guitar and the sacrifice it represented. And I hope I don’t forget to think about the greatest sacrifice of all, God’s gift of Himself.” Christmas has become synonymous with shopping, overindulging, competition, and stress. But according to Mike Huckabee (who was a pastor before getting into politics), that was never God’s intention. Going back to the Nativity, Christmas is supposed to be about simple things: faith, love, family, and hope. The hard part, in today’s crazy world, is remembering that those simple things are the most precious of all. Now Huckabee recounts twelve Christmas memories—often funny, sometimes deeply moving—that range from his childhood in Arkansas to his years as a young husband and father to his time as a governor and then a presidential candidate. These true stories will help you smile, take a deep breath, and maybe slow down your own holiday treadmill. If you’re looking for a little clarity, sanity, and inspiration at this insane time of year, you’re sure to enjoy A Simple Christmas.

The anthology is family-friendly and intended to bring a smile to faces and conjure memories of Christmases past. Some excerpts from our stories: "That red ornament was the biggest and newest bulb on the tree. But it wasn't a bulb to me. It was Mars. You know, that big red planet where the Martians live?" "I woke at dawn on Christmas morning, ran into the living room, and saw nothing from Santa under the tree. Santa had somehow missed me! Devastated, I crept to my bed and cried myself back to sleep." "I stopped celebrating Christmas when my mother died. I have too many good memories with her at Christmastime. It was her favorite holiday. I do not want to celebrate it without her." "I stood there staring at the cans of vegetables, cranberries and cherries. It looked like Mrs. Johnson was giving away our Christmas dinner." "You know what I mean," her voice was quivering and rising higher, "There is a Santa. Grandma Bertha told me so." "Have you been a good boy, Billy?" asked Santa.Mother always told me Santa kept track of my behavior, so I wondered why he had to ask."Yes, he has," my mother answered, before I could. "I guess we're all hoping for a Christmas miracle, in one way or another, aren't we? Seems like we're on the wrong world for that!" "What about this one, Mom?" Evan asked, staring at a dense seven-foot Scotch pine. Lifting the price tag, Margery saw that both its height and price were out of reach."Maybe next year," she said, squeezing his shoulders. "Let's keep looking."
