Book Round Cape Horn

Download or read book Round Cape Horn written by Joseph Lamson and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 1878 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A voyage round Cape Horn in a passenger-ship is an event of the past. The necessity for performing this perilous voyage has been obviated by the introduction of railroads and steamships. Emigrants and travelers are no longer obliged to risk their lives and waste their time in passing round the Stormy Cape in order to arrive at a point, which may be reached in a week by a pleasant ride across the continent on the railroad; and Cape Horn is destined to become a terra incognita to all but the readers of ancient voyages. I am not aware that a narrative of a voyage of this description has ever been published; and the hope that a truthful account of the perils, discomforts, and annoyances, as well as the pleasures and enjoyments attending it, may prove entertaining to the reader, has prompted me to send forth this little work to meet the fate or fortune which an enlightened public may award it. The scenes and anecdotes recorded at the end of the voyage, are given in the hope that they may possess some slight value as conveying an idea-a vague and indistinct one, perhaps-of some of the characteristics and habits of a portion of the people of California in early times.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sue A. Pike Sanders (1842-1931) traveled by rail from Delavan, Illinois, as part of the state's delegation to the Grand Army of the Republic encampment at San Francisco in 1886. A journey to, on and from the "golden shore" (1887) describes that leisurely trip west with stops in Denver, Colorado Springs, Pueblo, Salt Lake City, Reno, and Sacramento. Once in San Francisco, Sanders provides details of the program for the G.A.R. convention and its attendant parades and receptions, Bay excursion cruise, and tours of Chinatown. She makes side trips to Oakland, San José, Napa Valley, the geysers, and Yosemite. In Southern California, Sanders and her party visit Los Angeles to embark on their return journey, which takes them to Flagstaff and Albuquerque.

Download or read book Inspiring Generations written by Anniversary Story Book Committee and published by Yosemite Conservancy. This book was released on 2014-05-13 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On June 30, 1864, amidst the Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln signed the Yosemite Grant Act to protect Yosemite Valley and Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias. This act that set aside the first public parkland for future generations was a legacy for our nation and an inspiration to the world. To honor the 150th anniversary of this milestone, a call went out inviting the public to celebrate in prose and poetry the national park they love. The 150 pieces in this book were selected from hundreds of submissions from people who have visited, lived in, or worked in Yosemite National Park. These collected reflections feature, among other things, treks up Half Dome, escapades at The Ahwahnee, revels at the long-gone firefall, and, yes, encounters with those bears; and range from the hilarious to the historical, the enlightening to the uplifting. Inspiring Generations will encourage many journeys to the park filled with family, friends, and the stuff memories are made of.
