Book excerpt: Composed over two millenniums ago, the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali remains the philosophical thread that unites the ancient and current world of yoga. Yet, its many translations are underwhelming, lacking connection to reality and practicality. Innumerable forms and sects of yoga have come and gone in between. Obsessed with gaining special powers over mind and body, yoga’s re-tellers have clouded its history in a mystical mist of fantastic claims. It is human nature to crave powers to radically change our lot in life. These layers of dazzle and glitter have over the centuries led us further away from yoga’s spiritual core. The sutras’ clear, logical, and practical path has been blurred and lost. Radically breaking with this mystical tradition, A. K. Aruna seeks to reclaim for us this fountainhead of yoga by retying the understanding of these sutras to the even more ancient source of spiritual knowledge and yoga—the Upanishads. The Upanishads eschewed limited pursuits in order to seek an ultimate goal that was not time-bound. In this still pure form of the yoga of seeking ultimate, timeless truth, the words of Patanjali become crystal clear and practical. Yoga shines in timeless relevance. A. K. Aruna’s Patanjali Yoga Sutras: A Translation in the Light of Vedanta Scripture has brilliantly refocused the light on the Yoga Sutras. This is a companion, translation only, booklet to the Translation and Commentary version of the text by A. K. Aruna.

Book Meditation A Practical Guidebook

Download or read book Meditation A Practical Guidebook written by Swami Tadatmananda and published by Motilal Banarsidass. This book was released on 2014-01-01 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To ask, "What is meditation?" is like asking, "What is music?" No simple answer can even hope to convey the breadth and richness of this subject. Meditation is a contemplative art, a mental discipline, and a sacred journey. Meditation is a reflective practice, a tranquil retreat, and a joyous excursion. Meditation is simultaneously an aesthetic pursuit, a scientific investigation, and a spiritual path. You could say that meditation is a rainbow of many hues. But to describe meditation with fancy words and elegant expressions is like trying to describe the flavour of a ripe peach. Meditation, like the peach, must be experienced to be understood. Words can never suffice. Yet words of description and explanation are not useless. Words can tell you how to select the ripest fruit from a bushel of peaches. And words can tell you how to meditate, leading you to develop a powerful, rewarding practice. This book provides practical, methodical guidance for all who want to develop a powerful and rewarding practice of meditation. It begins with basic principles and proceeds step by step to more advanced topics while exploring a wide range of meditation techniques. Though the subject is vast attempt has been under to create a concise and user-friendly guidebook.

Book Infinite Paths to Infinite Reality

Download or read book Infinite Paths to Infinite Reality written by Ayon Maharaj and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-10-08 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sri Ramakrishna is widely known as a nineteenth-century Indian mystic who affirmed the harmony of all religions on the basis of his richly varied spiritual experiences and eclectic religious practices, both Hindu and non-Hindu. In Infinite Paths to Infinite Reality, Ayon Maharaj argues that Sri Ramakrishna was also a sophisticated philosopher of great contemporary relevance. Through a careful study of Sri Ramakrishna's recorded oral teachings in the original Bengali, Maharaj reconstructs his philosophical positions and analyzes them from a cross-cultural perspective. Sri Ramakrishna's spiritual journey culminated in the exalted state of "vijñana," his term for the "intimate knowledge" of God as the Infinite Reality that is both personal and impersonal, with and without form, immanent in the universe and beyond it. This expansive spiritual standpoint of vijñana, Maharaj contends, opens up a new paradigm for addressing central issues in cross-cultural philosophy of religion, including divine infinitude, religious pluralism, mystical experience, and the problem of evil. Sri Ramakrishna's vijñana-based religious pluralism--when grasped in all its subtlety--proves to have major philosophical advantages over dominant Western models. Moreover, his mystical testimony and teachings not only cut across long-standing debates about the nature of mystical experience but also bolster recent defenses of its epistemic value. Maharaj further demonstrates that Sri Ramakrishna's unique response to the problem of evil resonates strongly with Western "soul-making" theodicies and contemporary theories of skeptical theism. A pioneering interdisciplinary study of one of India's most important philosopher-mystics, Maharaj's book is essential reading for scholars and students in philosophy of religion, theology, religious studies, and Hindu studies.

Book The Yoga Sutras Of Patanjali The Book Of The Spiritual Man Annotated Edition

Download or read book The Yoga Sutras Of Patanjali The Book Of The Spiritual Man Annotated Edition written by Patanjali, Swami Vivekananda and published by Jazzybee Verlag. This book was released on 2012 with total page 143 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edition includes an extensive preface by Swami Vivekananda, the chief disciple of the 19th century mystic Ramakrishna Paramahansa and the founder of the Ramakrishna Math and the Ramakrishna Mission. He gives the reader deep insights about Yoga and the Ultimate Goal in Life. The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali are in themselves exceedingly brief, yet they contain the essence of practical wisdom, set forth in admirable order and detail. The theme, if the present interpreter be right, is the great regeneration, the birth of the spiritual from the psychical man: the same theme which Paul so wisely and eloquently set forth in writing to his disciples in Corinth, the theme of all mystics in all lands. We think of ourselves as living a purely physical life, in these material bodies of ours. In reality, we have gone far indeed from pure physical life; for ages, our life has been psychical, we have been centred and immersed in the psychic nature. Some of the schools of India say that the psychic nature is, as it were, a looking-glass, wherein are mirrored the things seen by the physical eyes, and heard by the physical ears. But this is a magic mirror; the images remain, and take a certain life of their own. Thus within the psychic realm of our life there grows up an imaged world wherein we dwell; a world of the images of things seen and heard, and therefore a world of memories; a world also of hopes and desires, of fears and regrets. Mental life grows up among these images, built on a measuring and comparing, on the massing of images together into general ideas; on the abstraction of new notions and images from these; till a new world is built up within, full of desires and hates, ambition, envy, longing, speculation, curiosity, self-will, self-interest. The teaching of the East is, that all these are true powers overlaid by false desires; that though in manifestation psychical, they are in essence spiritual; that the psychical man is the veil and prophecy of the spiritual man.

Book Road Map to Enlightenment Patanjali Yoga Sutras

Download or read book Road Map to Enlightenment Patanjali Yoga Sutras written by James Swartz and published by Shiningworld Press. This book was released on 2021-03-21 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We practice yoga to make our bodies healthy and attractive, and sometimes, in moments of well-being, spiritual intimations bubble up from deep within and ignite the desire to know more about ourselves. If we are lucky, we somehow discover the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, which speak to the universal need for transcendent freedom, and address the fundamental problem we face as we struggle to find meaning in this uncertain binary reality, the knower-doer split. Is it safe to trust this flame of freedom burning within that calls me to a higher destiny? Or should I resign myself to the shallow destiny of the crowd? Is there really a higher state of consciousness, a samadhi, that I can access with various physical, psychological and spiritual techniques that will quarantine me from the rat race and bring peace? Or is it available by knowledge because I am already free, as the ancient tradition of non-dual jnana yoga - Vedanta - contends? Perhaps a judicious combination of action and knowledge is required? In this short book I have attempted to resolve the perennial conflict between the path of action and the path of knowledge for those who seek the inner freedom that is our birthright.
