Book Yoga to Decrease Stress and Anxiety

Download or read book Yoga to Decrease Stress and Anxiety written by Christine Rowland and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In health care professionals who suffer from anxiety and stress, coping strategies such as yoga can decrease stress and anxiety. Health care professionals have demanding, high stress professions and are subjected to emotional distress which if not effectively managed, can lead to mental and physical illnesses, burnout, compassion fatigue, and exiting the health care profession (Cutliff and Jones, 2009). Health care workers need self-preserving strategies to maintain good emotional health and preserve their well-being. According to Ross, most people who practice yoga believe that their health is improved from practicing yoga (Ross, 2013). Development of resiliency is beneficial to health care professionals, enabling them to give the best possible care to the patients they serve. Stress and anxiety can affect cognition, behaviors, and emotions. Yoga is a low cost, portable, convenient way to help build resiliency. The author of this report suggests enlisting 75 individuals to participate in a two week trial of yoga in an attempt to help them decrease their levels of stress and anxiety. Volunteer yoga instructors will teach yoga classes and the participants will journal how they feel on the days they practice yoga both before and after. Volunteers for the trial, volunteer yoga instructors, the director of the wellness center, education department, director of nursing, co-leaders, and the pastor at the Methodist church would all play vital roles. Results will be retrieved from questionnaires distributed to the volunteers pre-trial and post-trial. If found to be valuable, these results could be introduced to orientations, wellness fairs, and yearly workshops that promote health and well-being.
