Book excerpt: Windsor Castle, the oldest and largest occupied castle in the world, has been a site of fundamental historical, cultural, and architectural importance for nearly one thousand years. This new popular history of the castle explains how a Norman motte-and-bailey castle established by William the Conqueror around 1070 survived and evolved through the Middle Ages, the English Civil War, the Restoration of the monarchy, two World Wars, and the disastrous fire of 1992, to remain the premier royal residence of Her Majesty The Queen to this day. Beautifully illustrated with spectacular paintings, drawings, and photographs from the Royal Collection, this book also includes newly commissioned photography of the castle as it appears today, as well as reconstructions of the castle at important moments in its history, revealing how this extraordinary building has developed over the centuries.

Book excerpt: This fascinating 100-year photographic collection of Windsor, Ontario from 1860 to 1960, with images culled from the archives of Walkerville Publishing Inc., chronicles the evolution of a sleepy village at the western edge of the British Empire, as it becomes a Canadian industry giant.Though christened Windsor because of its "back-home" familiarity, Canada's southernmost city was in large part shaped by its close proximity to Detroit, Michigan. The more than 130 photos in "Windsor Then" include images that emerge like a nearly forgotten dream: stubby ferry steamers puffing across the Detroit River, graceful ships cruising up and down the Great Lakes, charming horse-drawn carriages and trolleys giving way to the steel and smoke horse-less variety, rowdy rum runners making their fortunes during the wild days of Prohibition, the harsh reality of the Great Depression sandwiched between two "great" wars, and the rise of the well-to-do and comfortable middle class as Windsor's auto and tool and die industry matures.Ultimately, what this book reveals is a portrait of a community's boundless optimism, its innovators as well as simple, hard-working business folk, during an era of remarkable achievement, vigour and great expectations, when anything was possible. And indeed, isn't Windsor's story really the story of Canada?

Book excerpt: In 1824, a group of prominent Hartford businessmen formed the Connecticut River Company to construct a canal that would bypass the treacherous rapids of Enfield Falls and extend navigation along the Connecticut River. Soon boats were a frequent sight in the village of Windsor Locks, named after the locks of the canal that ran alongside Main Street. Mills also sprang up in the area, utilizing the canals water to power their manufacturing operations. Today the canal has taken on a more historical, ecological, and recreational significance. Home to diverse plant and animal species, it is an excellent place to enjoy sweeping views of the Connecticut River and to see the factories that played a big part in the regions history.

Book excerpt: Windsor, Ontario: the City of Roses, the Automotive Capital of Canada, South Detroit. Whatever name you know it by, this is a city that has flourished and transformed over the years, growing and changing with its industrial nature. In Windsor: Then & Now, architectural specialist Andrew Foot partners with landscape photographer Ian Virtue to explore the life of this mid-sized, blue-collar town through photographs. By contrasting historic images, stretching from the turn of the century to the modernist 1970s, with photographs of today's Windsor, we see a cityscape in vivid relief. From the Gothic towers of St. Mary's Academy, levelled for a suburban neighbourhood, to the vibrant downtown Norwich Block replaced by the skyscraping Chrysler tower, Windsor: Then & Now shows us a city balancing a rich heritage with a taste for the new--a constant flux, shifting and renewing itself with the times.

Download or read book Windsor Locks History written by Melvin Montemerlo and published by Melvin D. Montemerlo. This book was released on 2017-11-06 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first of a series of four books on the history of Windsor Locks, Connecticut. It contains 38 chapters about important people, places and events in the history of Windsor Locks. Windsor Locks history goes from 1663, when the first settlers reached the Pine Meadow section of the town of Windsor, CT. In 1854, the Pine Meadow section of WIndsor was incorporated into the separate town of Windsor Locks. So the history of WIndsor Locks goes from 1663 to the current time (2022), which is about three and a half centuries. The first two books of this series present chapters on important people, places and events in that history. Windsor Locks History: Volume III presents a number of sets of photo of the town taken from about 1880 to 1960, and as well as more descriptive chapters. The fourth book in the series is "Understanding Windsor Locks History", which focusses on the overeall structure of that history, dividing the three and a half centuries into four distinct phases that the town's evolution that the tow has gone through. It presents "chronological historiies" of the town by three different people, and ties together the stories of the first three books to the chronological history of the town. Descriptive histories give detailed accounts of the people, places and events, while the chronological histories list the events in the order in which they occurred. You can read either approach first, but tying the two together results in a deeper understanding of the town's history.
