Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: William Butler Yeats (1865-1939) was an Irish poet and one of the foremost figures of 20th century literature. A pillar of both the Irish and British literary establishments, he helped to found the Abbey Theatre, and in his later years served as an Irish Senator for two terms. Awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1923, Yeats—along with Lady Gregory, Edward Martyn and others—was a driving force behind the Irish Literary Revival. “This study is a sequel to my W. B. Yeats And Tradition, and the Yeats scholar may like to take all my work in conjunction; but I have tried to make it possible for the two books to be read independently. “The aim of this book is to interpret what Yeats meant by the symbolism of five of his plays, Four Plays for Dancers and The Cat and the Moon; also by that of a number of related lyrics. I should stress, once and for all, that I am concerned primarily with what the symbols meant for the poet himself; Yeats of course hoped that the ‘words on the page’ would work for him, and he also believed in a collective unconscious which would operate to suggest his archetypal meanings to all readers; but it can of course be maintained that communication fails. I myself doubt whether this ever happens; but I cannot prove this statement in a book not concerned with technique; and this is why I define my field as I have done. What Yeats believed his plays and poems to mean is a valid field for scholarship; and the meaning he attached is certainly the archetypal meaning, which is therefore my main preoccupation.”—F. A. C. Wilson

Book excerpt: In W. B. Yeats's 'Rosa Alchemica,' a collection of short stories initially published in 1897, the author explores themes of love, mysticism, and the supernatural in a highly symbolic and poetic manner. Drawing from his deep interest in esotericism and folklore, Yeats presents a series of enchanting narratives that blur the lines between reality and imagination, inviting readers to reflect on the complexities of human emotions and the mysteries of life. The stories are characterized by Yeats's lyrical prose and intricate symbolism, echoing the Romantic and Symbolist literary movements of the late 19th century. 'Rosa Alchemica' offers a glimpse into Yeats's fascination with the spiritual and transcendent aspects of existence, making it a compelling read for those interested in the intersections between literature and mysticism. William Butler Yeats, a Nobel laureate and one of the most celebrated poets of the 20th century, was deeply influenced by Irish mythology, the occult, and spiritualism. His profound involvement in the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn and his exploration of Celtic legends informed his literary work, including 'Rosa Alchemica.' Book The Collected Works of W B Yeats Volume XIII A Vision

Download or read book The Collected Works of W B Yeats Volume XIII A Vision written by William Butler Yeats and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2013-02-12 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Collected Works of W. B. Yeats, Volume XIII: A Vision is part of a fourteen-volume series under the general editorship of eminent Yeats scholar George Bornstein and formerly the late Richard J. Finneran and George Mills Harper. One of the strangest works of literary modernism, A Vision is Yeats's greatest occult work. Edited by Yeats scholars Catherine E. Paul and Margaret Mills Harper, the volume presents the "system" of philosophy, psychology, history, and the life of the soul that Yeats and his wife George (née Hyde Lees) received and created by means of mediumistic experiments from 1917 through the early 1920s. Yeats obsessively revised the book, and the revised 1937 version is much more widely available than its predecessor. The original 1925 version of A Vision, poetic, unpolished, masked in fiction, and close to the excitement of the automatic writing that the Yeatses believed to be its supernatural origin, is presented here in a scholarly edition for the first time. The text, minimally corrected to retain the sense of the original, is extensively annotated, with particular attention paid to the relationship between the published book and its complex genetic materials. Indispensable to an understanding of the poet's late work and entrancing on its own merit, A Vision aims to be, all at once, a work of theoretical history, an esoteric philosophy, an aesthetic symbology, a psychological schema, and a sacred book. It is as difficult as it is essential reading for any student of Yeats.

Book William Butler Yeats as a Hybrid Poet The Symbolism of Poetry

Download or read book William Butler Yeats as a Hybrid Poet The Symbolism of Poetry written by and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2023-11-17 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2022 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, Justus-Liebig-University Giessen (Anglistik), course: WB Yeats and Symbolism, language: English, abstract: This term paper deals with William Butler Yeats as a hybrid poet. He was always conflicted between his enthusiasm for Ireland and his critical attitude towards the violent confrontation. Notwithstanding, Yeats manages in an impressive way to bring out this ambivalence and to draw attention to this bloody event. While the result is a free and independent Ireland, the bloody road to it was painful. "Easter 1916" is a political poem about sacrifice, change, admiration and immortality. The author wishes to commemorate the admirable sacrifice made by the rebels in 1916 for Irish freedom. Although most of them died, they and their deeds will forever be remembered and passed down through generations, as they are immortal to the Irish. It is not for nothing that Yeats is considered a master of symbolism because the symbols he used in his poems are world-famous. The ideas of his essay "The Symbolism of Poetry" determined and influenced his poetry, such as "Easter 1916". Symbols can have multiple meanings, and thus the mind of the reader is expanded, which is why symbols gain an unlimited influence that goes far beyond the formal nature of their own words. Moreover, "Easter 1916", in a way, marks his shift from Romantic to Modernist poetry. Although some Romantic elements are present in the poem, he nevertheless deals with contemporary politics that reflects the real world.

Book Translation and Symbolism Four Case Studies of W B Yeats

Download or read book Translation and Symbolism Four Case Studies of W B Yeats written by Mehdi Ghobadi and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2013 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Symbolism is a late nineteenth century art movement in which everything can be idiosyncratic in many cases. Symbols may have different meanings from era to era, age-to-age, culture to culture and land to land. Since they are personally, conventionally, and arche-typically idiosyncratic, their understanding and consequently their translating cannot an easy work to do. The present descriptive research is an attempt to investigate the renderings of symbolism in four W. B. Yeats's plays. The present five-part book elaborates on symbolism and translation of Yeats's four plays from theory into practice in order to identify and examine the translation procedures of symbols in Yeatsian drama translated from English into Farsi. The findings and results may be useful for translators of both English and Persian. It may come of use to those scholars who are interested in literature and culture and those who choose to work on cultural barriers like symbols. It may also have outcome for directors who may have difficulty for performing the symbolic plays. In addition, it may come of use for syllabus designers in TS, preparing textbooks for training translators.
