Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Impelled by a call to share their gifts through service, Russian Mennonite women immigrating to Canada organized their own church societies (Vereine) as avenues of mission and spiritual strengthening. For women who were restricted from leadership positions within the church, these societies became the primary avenue of church involvement. Through them they contributed vast amounts of energy, time and financial resources to the mission activity of the church. The societies thus became a context in which women could speak, pray and creatively give expression to their own understanding of the biblical message. Using primary sources such as reports, letters, minutes, etc., as well as society histories, interviews and survey data, Redekop charts the development of these societies, from the establishment of the earliest ones in the 1870s to their flowering in the fifties and sixties and their decline in the eighties and nineties. The Work of Their Hands elucidates the context in which Mennonite women lived their identity as Christian women, one considered appropriate by themselves and the institutional church. It also shows how changes to the societies, including declining membership and a shift in their primary focus from sewing and baking to one of spiritual fellowship, reflect the changing roles of women within the church, the home and the wider society. The Work of Their Hands is an important book in the history of Mennonite women’s spirituality and will be a valuable resource for religious studies, women’s studies and Canadian history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is now [1990] one hundred and thirty years since the birth of the Mennonite Brethren Church and therefore time for someone in that church to take a backward glance to see how things have developed. Who better to do this John B. Toews. His life spans well over half of those years and he has experienced much of what he writes. "JB" as he is affectionately known by both students and colleagues is a patriarchal figure in the Mennonite Brethren Church. Born in Ukraine, the Russian Revolution and its aftermath were the crucible that shaped his youth and young adult years. After studying in Western Europe, Toews immigrated to Canada in the late 1920s. Much of his life has been in Mennonite Brethren educational institutions in Canada and the United States. During ten years as Executive Secretary of the Mennonite Brethren Board of Missions he traveled widely and came to know Mennonite Brethren people around the world. In between educational and mission administrative responsibilities he pastored in Kansas and California. After retiring from the presidency of the Mennonite Brethren Biblical Seminary he became the founding Director of the Historical Commission of the Mennonite Brethren Church.

Book Introduction to Old Order and Conservative Mennonite Groups

Download or read book Introduction to Old Order and Conservative Mennonite Groups written by Stephen Scott and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 1996-01-01 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book tells a story which until now has not been available in such an interesting and comprehensive form. What holds these people together? Why are they growing in number? Where do they live? The Old Order Mennonites are less well known than the Amish, but are similar in many beliefs and practices. Some Old Order Mennonites drive horses and buggies. Others use cars for transportation. Conservative Mennonite groups vary a great deal, but in general espouse strong faith and family life and believe that how they live should distinguish them from the larger society around them. The author details courtship and wedding practices, methods of worship, dress, transportation, and vocation. Never before has there been such an inside account of these people and their lives. The author spent years conferring and interviewing members of the various groups, trying to portray their history and their story in a fair and accurate manner. An enjoyable, educational, inspiring book.

Book Pilgrims in Lotus Land

    Book Details:
  • Author : Robert K. Burkinshaw
  • Publisher : McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP
  • Release : 1995-05-05
  • ISBN : 0773565299
  • Pages : 368 pages

Download or read book Pilgrims in Lotus Land written by Robert K. Burkinshaw and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 1995-05-05 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Burkinshaw traces the growth of conservative Protestantism in British Columbia from its clashes with liberal Protestants in the early twentieth century; through the post-World War II years when a bewildering variety of smaller groups, including Baptist and Pentecostal denominations as well as Mennonite, Reformed, and Evangelical Free churches, became important; to the 1970s when the majority of worshipping Protestants belonged to evangelical groups. He examines the factors that made evangelicalism more adaptable to changes in the geographic, ethnic, and social distribution of the province's population, and argues that while the evangelical movement in BC was influenced by American fundamentalism it was not simply an extension of the American campaign. He also examines the impact of evangelicals on provincial politics, most particularly their role in the rise of the Social Credit Party. Burkinshaw provides a wealth of new information on the phenomenon of twentieth-century evangelicalism and challenges us to rethink the nature of religious conservatism.

The twentieth century brought them into the economic and cultural mainstream. That adaptation is the subject of the eleven essays and autobiographies of Bridging Troubled Waters. The essays are written by notable Mennonite scholars -- John H. Redekop, Ted Regehr, Katie Funk Wiebe, and others. The autobiographies by David Ewert, Waldo Hiebert, and J.B. Toews sparkle with insight into the transitions they and their people navigated during these momentous decades (1940-1960).
