Book World Yearbook of Education 1981

Download or read book World Yearbook of Education 1981 written by Jacquetta Megarry and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-10-28 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First Published in 2005. The phrase 'education of minorities' raises a variety of questions. As a World Yearbook theme it demands clarification. We are using the word 'minority' to refer not to relative numbers but to 'the condition of being inferior or subordinate'. This could be taken to include students with a variety of handicaps - physical, intellectual, socioeconomic, cultural; pupils with low literacy or language problems; and victims of race or sex discrimination. However, this book concentrates on the problems of students who are disadvantaged by differences of culture and language, especially ethnic minorities who do not possess the background, attributes and skills of the dominant group and are thus distanced from the sources of power and status in the country they inhabit.

Book Oriental Languages and Cultures

Download or read book Oriental Languages and Cultures written by Indira Gazieva and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2009-05-27 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Oriental Languages and Cultures is a collection of new essays by academics who participated in the 1st international conference Oriental Languages and Cultures, held at Russian State University for the Humanities in Moscow on 22-23 November 2007. The collection presents a vivid overview of current problems in the study of the languages, literatures and cultures of the Middle and Far East. The uniqueness of this book lies in its bringing to publication a steadily growing interest in languages and culture of the Far East, as well as the East as a cultural phenomenon which has long been observed in the former Soviet Union and post-Soviet Russia. The book is divided into five sections. The first contains essays outlining new approaches in the understanding of theoretical concepts relating to oriental languages. The second section explores new directions in the field of oriental literature. The third surveys a growing Russian interest in the culture of the Far East. The fourth section provides insights that help towards understanding the nature of the tolerance and gender problem in Eastern languages and cultures; and the fifth section’s contributions address the issues of assessment and pedagogy in the teaching of Oriental languages.

Book Unity and diversity in grammaticalization scenarios

Download or read book Unity and diversity in grammaticalization scenarios written by Walter Bisang and published by Language Science Press. This book was released on 2017 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The volume contains a selection of papers originally presented at the symposium on “Areal patterns of grammaticalization and cross-linguistic variation in grammaticalization scenarios” held on 12-14 March 2015 at Johannes Gutenberg University of Mainz. The papers, written by leading scholars combining expertise in historical linguistics and grammaticalization research, study variation in grammaticalization scenarios in a variety of language families (Slavic, Indo-Aryan, Tibeto-Burman, Bantu, Mande, "Khoisan", Siouan, and Mayan). The volume stands out in the vast literature on grammaticalization by focusing on variation in grammaticalization scenarios and areal patterns in grammaticalization. Apart from documenting new grammaticalization paths, the volume makes a methodological contribution as it addresses an important question of how to reconcile universal outcomes of grammaticalization processes with the fact that the input to these processes is language-specific and construction-specific.

Book A Modern History of Hong Kong

Download or read book A Modern History of Hong Kong written by Steve Tsang and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2003-12-31 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This major history of Hong Kong tells the remarkable story of how a cluster of remote fishing villages grew into an icon of capitalism. The story began in 1842 with the founding of the Crown Colony after the First Anglo-Chinese war - the original 'Opium War'. As premier power in Europe and an expansionist empire, Britain first created in Hong Kong a major naval station and the principal base to open the Celestial Chinese Empire to trade. Working in parallel with the locals, the British built it up to become a focus for investment in the region and an international centre with global shipping, banking and financial interests. Yet by far the most momentous change in the history of this prosperous, capitalist colony was its return in 1997 to 'Mother China', the most powerful Communist state in the world.
