Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why a journey from Zen to Methodism? Two friends embark on a dual path of discovery while driving from Portland to Denver. The miles take them through the beautiful scenery of the Pacific Northwest as their souls traverse the spiritual landscapes of a lifetime. The journey begins in the San Francisco Bay Area of the 1960s with the nascent American Zen movement led by Shunryu Suzuki. From there it winds through the years, passing through Christianity and pop culture, John Cage and avant-garde music, the haunting beauty of Taize worship, Celtic Christianity, spiritual naturalism, the painful failures of the modern church, and the promise the church may still hold. The barren landscape of southern Wyoming becomes a fitting backdrop for one friend's growing skepticism as the spiritual past seems more and more disconnected from the present uncertainty. Unexpectedly, the practical theology of eighteenth-century theologian John Wesley, the founder of Methodism, offers the possibility of merging these disparate spiritual experiences together into a single pathway. Transformation, however, inevitably involves loss when the friends find their roads diverging as the destination approaches: one branching towards hope, and the other towards despair.

Download or read book Massacre at Sand Creek written by Gary L. Roberts and published by Abingdon Press. This book was released on 2016-05-03 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sand Creek. At dawn on the morning of November 29, 1864, Colonel John Milton Chivington gave the command that led to slaughter of 230 peaceful Cheyennes and Arapahos—primarily women, children, and elderly—camped under the protection of the U. S. government along Sand Creek in Colorado Territory and flying both an American flag and a white flag. The Sand Creek massacre seized national attention in the winter of 1864-1865 and generated a controversy that still excites heated debate more than 150 years later. At Sand Creek demoniac forces seemed unloosed so completely that humanity itself was the casualty. That was the charge that drew public attention to the Colorado frontier in 1865. That was the claim that spawned heated debate in Congress, two congressional hearings, and a military commission. Westerners vociferously and passionately denied the accusations. Reformers seized the charges as evidence of the failure of American Indian policy. Sand Creek launched a war that was not truly over for fifteen years. In the first year alone, it cost the United States government $50,000,000. Methodists have a special stake in this story. The governor whose polices led the Cheyennes and Arapahos to Sand Creek was a prominent Methodist layman. Colonel Chivington was a Methodist minister. Perhaps those were merely coincidences, but the question also remains of how the Methodist Episcopal Church itself responded to the massacre. Was it also somehow culpable in what happened? It is time for this story to be told. Coming to grips with what happened at Sand Creek involves hard questions and unsatisfactory answers not only about what happened but also about what led to it and why. It stirs ancient questions about the best and worst in every person, questions older than history, questions as relevant as today’s headlines, questions we all must answer from within.

Book Julian Rush Facing the Music

Download or read book Julian Rush Facing the Music written by Lee Merrick and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2001 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Julian Rush is a United Methodist minister who served churches in Dallas, Denver, Boulder, and Colorado Springs for 17 years until his suppressed homosexual orientation surfaced. With Julian's acknowledgement of his sexuality, in the early '80s, First United Methodist Church of Boulder decided he was no longer suitable to minister to the congregation and chose to stop paying his salary. Julian's situation with the Boulder church and United Methodism became widely publicized as the denomination continued to grapple with the issue of homosexuality. This is Julian's own record of his struggles with being unacknowledged as a gay child, his religion, family and community both before and after the discovery of his orientation and the reaction of those his life has touched. These include persons who are non-gay but supportive, gays and lesbians who are out, non-supportive persons, and an outpouring of pain and suffering from those closeted people who could not reveal themselves. Through a tortuous journey, Julian continues to discover his niche in communities that can benefit from his ministry. He last served as Executive Director for the Colorado AIDS Project as an appointed United Methodist minister. This is the story of how it all began.
