Book Yankee Ingenuity in the War Classic Reprint

Download or read book Yankee Ingenuity in the War Classic Reprint written by Frank Parker Stockbridge and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-16 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Yankee Ingenuity in the War IN presenting this report Of some of the more striking and inspiring examples Of the technical achievements Of America that went SO far toward the Winning of the Great War, the author wishes, first, to point out that the omission of any mention Of the great scientific and engineering feats Of the Entente Allies, except incidentally, is due not to any desire to disparage the magnificent work Of those European masters Of pure and applied science whose ser vice in the cause of humanity was surely no less fruitful and even more arduous than that Of their American confreres. But the Whole scope and plan Of this book, by its nature, excludes from present consideration all but distinctly American enterprise in this field. Even within this comparatively narrow range, there is no pretext that the Whole field has been covered, or that What has been covered might not have been dealt with more in detail and with greater scientific precision. Event ually that will be done; beyond a doubt the complete history Of science in the war, yet to be written, will reveal a thousand wonders much more marvelous than any that have yet been set down. This volume, however, has not been written for the scientist or the technologist, but for the average American, neither skilled nor interested in technical details, but susceptible, the author believes, to the thrill Of patriotic pride that comes from the recital of the story Of a winning fight against heavy Odds. Book excerpt: The great World War was more than two-thirds over when America entered the struggle, and yet in a sense this country was in the war from its very beginning. Three great inventions controlled the character of the fighting and made it different from any other the world has ever seen. These three inventions were American. The submarine was our invention; it carried the war into the sea. The airplane was an American invention; it carried the war into the sky. We invented the machine-gun; it drove the war into the ground. It is not my purpose to boast of American genius but, rather, to show that we entered the war with heavy responsibilities. The inven-tions we had given to the world had been developed marvelously in other lands. Furthermore they were in the hands of a determined and unscrupulous foe, and we found before us the task of overcoming the very machines that we had created. Yankee ingenuity was faced with a real test. The only way of overcoming the airplane was to build more and better machines than the enemy possessed. This we tried to do, but first we had to be taught by our allies the latest refinements of this machine, and the war was over before we had more than started our aërial program. The machine-gun and its accessory, barbed wire (also an American invention), were overcome by the tank; and we may find what little comfort we can in the fact that its invention was inspired by the sight of an American farm tractor. But the tank was a British creation and was undoubtedly the most important invention of the war. On the sea we were faced with a most baffling problem. The U-boat could not be coped with by the building of swarms of submarines. The essential here was a means of locating the enemy and destroying him even while he lurked under the surface. Two American inventions, the hydrophone and the depth bomb, made the lot of the U-boat decidedly unenviable and they hastened if they did not actually end German frightfulness on the sea. But these were by no means the only inventions of the war. Great Britain showed wonderful ingenuity and resourcefulness in many di-rections; France did marvels with the airplane and showed great clev-erness in her development of the tank and there was a host of minor inventions to her credit; while Italy showed marked skill in the crea-tion of large airplanes and small seacraft.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The companion book to an upcoming museum exhibition of the same name, Places of Invention seeks to answer timely questions about the nature of invention and innovation: What is it about some places that sparks invention and innovation? Is it simply being at the right place at the right time, or is it more than that? How does “place”—whether physical, social, or cultural—support, constrain, and shape innovation? Why does invention flourish in one spot but struggle in another, even very similar location? In short: Why there? Why then? Places of Invention frames current and historic conversation on the relationship between place and creativity, citing extensive scholarship in the area and two decades of investigation and study from the National Museum of American History’s Lemelson Center for the Study of Invention and Innovation. The book is built around six place case studies: Hartford, CT, late 1800s; Hollywood, CA, 1930s; Medical Alley, MN, 1950s; Bronx, NY,1970s; Silicon Valley, CA, 1970s–1980s; and Fort Collins, CO, 2010s. Interspersed with these case studies are dispatches from three “learning labs” detailing Smithsonian Affiliate museums’ work using Places of Invention as a model for documenting local invention and innovation. Written by exhibition curators, each part of the book focuses on the central thesis that invention is everywhere and fueled by unique combinations of creative people, ready resources, and inspiring surroundings. Like the locations it explores, Places of Invention shows how the history of invention can be a transformative lens for understanding local history and cultivating creativity on scales of place ranging from the personal to the national and beyond.
