Book Yakovlev Aces of World War 2

Download or read book Yakovlev Aces of World War 2 written by George Mellinger and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2012-10-20 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Yak-1 entered Soviet service in 1941, one of three modern types of aircraft accepted for production just prior to the German invasion of the USSR. Despite initial shortcomings, it soon proved to be the thoroughbred of the Soviet Airforce. Indeed, it remained in production until the end of the war, modernized but fundamentally recognizable. By VE-day about 33,100 Yakovlev fighters had been built. Virtually all Soviet fighter regiments flew at least one variety of Yak for a time, including those which gained their fame identified with other aircraft, and consequently many pilots known as Airacobra or Lavochkin aces also scored victories with the Yak. Many other famous aces were exclusively 'Yak patriots', including the French Normandie pilots. This book focuses on the Soviet aces who scored all, or most of their victories in the Yak, drawing informaion from official unit histories and memoirs of the Soviet pilots themselves.

Book Stalin s Falcons

    Book Details:
  • Author : Dmitry Zubov
  • Publisher : Air World
  • Release : 2024-06-13
  • ISBN : 1399095684
  • Pages : 373 pages

Download or read book Stalin s Falcons written by Dmitry Zubov and published by Air World. This book was released on 2024-06-13 with total page 373 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this stunning exposé, Dmitry Zubov reveals the dark truth of the terrible losses suffered by Soviet flyers, the inferiority of the Russian aircraft on World War II's Eastern Front, and the almost slave-like conditions in which those aircraft were made. The Soviet history of the Second World War, written under the conditions of a totalitarian regime, reflected all its features, with the result that it includes solid sets of patriotic fables that have no connection with reality. Many of the events of the war were distorted beyond recognition or even made up from beginning to end. Archives containing original documents were available only to selected, specially verified KGB ‘historians’ who presented only the version of the war that was acceptable to the Soviet regime. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, the process of declassifying archives and gaining wide access to information gradually began to reveal the terrible truth of the crimes of the Soviet regime. One of which, of course, was the incompetent leadership of the Red Army, which led to massive loss of life across the military and civilians alike. However, the consequences of decades of Soviet propaganda had a strong impact on both Russian and world historical science. Because of this, not only Russian, but, unfortunately, many European and American historians found themselves repeating the Soviet myths they had been fed. The history of Soviet fighter aircraft did not escape this fate. The tale of Stalin’s so-called ‘Falcons’, who allegedly shot down dozens and even hundreds of Luftwaffe aircraft, was persistently drummed into the heads of many generations of Russian people. These heroes, supposedly, flew Soviet fighters whose technical characteristics were many times superior to their German counterparts, with the result that Luftwaffe aces were reportedly afraid of meeting them in the air. These primitive propaganda clichés became a model for describing the actions of Stalin’s fighter aircraft. In this stunning exposé, Stalin’s Falcons reveals the stark and dark truth of the terrible losses suffered by Soviet flyers, the inferiority of the Russian aircraft and the almost slave-like conditions in which those aircraft were made.

Download or read book Notes of an Aircraft Designer written by Alexander Yakovlev and published by University Press of the Pacific. This book was released on 2001-09-01 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the frank and engaging autobiography of one of the Soviet Union's most successful aircraft designers. Yakovlev is best known for his piston-engined fighters, his sports planes, some early Soviet helicopters, and the first Soviet all-weather jet fighter. The book includes his interesting, and caustic, impressions of the aircraft industries of Western Europe, which Yakovlev visited in the late thirties. Alexander S. Yakovlev was one of the most versatile aircraft designers of his age, but he had the misfortune to work in the USSR, which made him almost unknown to the outside world. In 1926-27 he built his first aeroplane, the AIR-1, and from then on he consistently designed structures which were years ahead of their time. Yakovlev died in 1989, and today his design bureau, still on the site of the old bed factory, is the giant Yak Aircraft Corporation. It produces the most important Russian twinjet airliner, a diverse group of general aviation aircraft, an advanced jet trainer and light attack aircraft and, in conjunction with the Museum of Flying in California, replicas of the Yak-3 wartime fighter. The Yakovlev Design Bureau has designed aircraft from gliders to jet transports, not to mention vertical take-off fighters and helicopters since before World War II.

Book Soviet Aircraft Industry

Download or read book Soviet Aircraft Industry written by Peter G Dancey and published by Fonthill Media. This book was released on 2017-04-22 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Soviet aircraft industry was an essential part of the USSR’s campaign for global dominance in the twentieth century. Thanks to the thick fog of secrecy that enveloped it throughout the Cold War, it has long inspired the fascination of analysts and enthusiasts in the West; until the collapse of the USSR in 1991, details of Soviet aircraft were often a matter of conjecture. This book aims to uncover fully the mystery surrounding this topic. Drawing on original and previously unpublished information obtained directly from the former USSR, Soviet Aircraft Industry examines the unique characteristics of Soviet-designed aircraft—particularly military types, which were the cause of great concern to the West. Further, by virtue of the industry’s central role throughout Soviet history, this book provides a rare and important perspective into the broader theme of Russia’s great communist experiment.

Book Stalingrad

  • Author : Ben Skipper
  • Publisher : Pen and Sword Military
  • Release : 2023-05-04
  • ISBN : 1399007777
  • Pages : 68 pages

Download or read book Stalingrad written by Ben Skipper and published by Pen and Sword Military. This book was released on 2023-05-04 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The very name Stalingrad has become synonymous with military folly and political arrogance. Its capture by the Wehrmacht was a crushing defeat, both militarily and politically, for the Red Army. The 6th Army was a highly experienced key element of Army Group South. In late June 1942 it rolled eastwards as part of the summer offensive to capture the vital oilfields of Baku and secure the city on the Volga that bore the name of the Soviet leader. The 6th Army was the acme of German military might and on paper it should have easily overwhelmed the defenders of Chuikov’s 62nd Army. However its commander, General Friedrich Wilhelm Ernst Paulus, lacked field experience. His army would pay the price. Stalingrad was a new type of battlefield and it would test the mettle of attacker and defender to the very limit, all the while the thermometer plunged. This BattleCraft title also looks at four pieces of military hardware. Innumerable T-34’s, which often rolled off local assembly lines unpainted and straight into battle took on the Stug III assault gun as it supported troops fighting for mere meters of territory. Overhead, in the frigid air, deadly V, Ju87 Stuka and Yak 9s, were locked in battle for air superiority over the shattered remains of a once vibrant city. A selection of historical and contemporary photos and illustrations are included in this book alongside stunning showcase builds, providing the modeler with subjects to whet the creative appetite. It also features details of model kits and extras that can really help the modeler bring military history to life.

Book Soviet V STOL Aircraft

Download or read book Soviet V STOL Aircraft written by Michael J. Hirschberg and published by AIAA. This book was released on 1997 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This important case study reports on the V/STOL development activities in the Soviet Union. As in the West, the Soviets also began using flying test rigs in the late 1950s. By combining the lift engines with modifications to existing engines, the Soviets were able to deploy the Yak-38 Forger only two years after the Harrier. The Forger was in service for 15 years before the political situation forced its retirement from service. Packed with illustrations, references, glossaries, and bibliographies, this case study is a necessary resource for the studies of V/STOL aircraft and systems designers.

Book Yakovlev Fighters of World War Two

Download or read book Yakovlev Fighters of World War Two written by Yefim Gordon and published by Hikoki. This book was released on 2015-03-30 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Founded in 1927, the design bureau headed by Aleksandr S. Yakovlev started out with light aircraft but soon became a "fighter maker" when the prospect of war loomed large. Originally designated I-26, Yakovlev's simple but rugged fighter, first flew in 1940 and entered production at the end of the year as the Yak-1. The Yak-9 followed in 1942 and brought a greater proportion of metal to the airframe design leading to the development of the long-range Yak-9D, the up-gunned tank buster versions (Yak-9-37, Yak-9T, Yak-9K etc.) and the Yak-9B light bomber. Later flown by the French pilots of the Normandie-Niemen squadron of the Soviet Air Force the Yak-3 introduced in 1943 came to be recognized as one of the best fighters of WW II. This detailed history is richly illustrated with unit badges, nose art, scale drawings, color side views and three-views. Previously unreleased photos and personal stories from pilots in the Great Patriotic War ensure Yakovlev Fighters of World War II is a detailed reference source for modelers, enthusiasts and historians alike.

Book The Yakovlev Yak 7 In Profile Scale

Download or read book The Yakovlev Yak 7 In Profile Scale written by Erik Pilawskii and published by . This book was released on 2021-07 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume № 7 of the Profile & Scale series details the Yakovlev Yak-7 fighter to an entirely new standard of authenticity. More than 65 Yak-7 examples are faithfully documented in full-colour profile, many appearing for the first time. Forty-four pages of original and not previously published 1:48 scale line drawings reveal the development and complexity of the Yak-7 family as never before. These line drawings are the culmination of nearly 30 years' dedicated work on the Yak family, and should present the most complete, accurate and illuminating scale work regarding the aircraft at the present time. The book presents many development and variant detail facts about the Yak-7 which have hitherto been unclear. The scale drawings and profiles are complimented by more than 35 photographs, some never before published. It is fervently hoped that at long last many hitherto confused or inaccurate details of the Yak-7 family will be clarified and rectified. A discussion of the peculiarities of the Moscow built examples is included. Many of the colour profiles represent examples which will be familiar to students of the Yak-7, albeit completed to the utmost standard of accuracy. Several profiles will doubtless be new even to experienced readers, and it is hoped these will delight both the casual reader and the serious student, equally. A brief awards and claim graphic is provided for a number of aces. These pilot cards will round out a volume which should be a treasure trove of information regarding the Yak-7 fighter for both modellers and students of history.
