Book excerpt: Originally published in 1966, this was the first of Muhammad ‘Abduh’s works to be translated into English. Risālat al Tauhid represents the most popular of his discussion of Islamic thought and belief. ‘Abduh is still quoted and revered as the father of 20th Century Muslim thinking in the Arab world and his mind, here accessible, constituted both courageous and strenuous leadership in his day. All the concerns and claims of successive exponents of duty and meaning of the mosque in the modern world may be sensed in these pages. The world and Islam have moved on since ‘Abduh’s lifetime, but he remains a source for the historian of contemporary movements and a valuable index to the self-awareness of Arab Islam.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author of this treatise is Imam abu Jafar al Tahawi (239 - 321 AH), one of the leading authorities on the Hanafi madhab. The period he lived in was the zenith of the dissemination of the Islamic sciences and Imam at Tahawi was one of the giants this era produced. To illustrate this; his teachers included Imam Ismail ibn Yahya Al Muzani (a major student of Imam al shaafi), he collected hadith from Imam an-Nasai (author of Sunan an-Nasai, one of the saheeh Sittah) and his students included the great Muhaddith Imam At-Tabarani. The purpose of this treatise was to state the creed of the early scholars of the Hanafi madhab and to indicate its correlation with the views of Ahl As-Sunnah Wal Jamaah in general. Imam Dhahabi (673-748 AH) said about At-Tahawi - He was the muhaddith and faqih of Egypt, equally distinguished in both fields. Whoever reads the word of this Imam is sure to acknowledge his erudition and width of vision. Ibn Kathir (702-774 AH) said - He was the most reliable and correct narrator of hadith and one of the greatest scholars of hadith. Ibn Hajr Al Asaqalani (773-853 AH) said - He was a reliable narrator, a great scholar, a famous jurist, very knowledgeable concerning the controversies of the jurists, and a man of keen interests.

Book excerpt: Foreword - By Shaykh al-Saduq: All praise be to Allah, the One and Only, who does not have a partner; the Peerless, the Needless, who has no like; the First, the Ever-Existent, who has no limit; the Last and the Everlasting who has no end; the Existing, the Constant, who has no non-existence; the Eternal King, who does not decline; the Power who is not weakened; the All-Knowing from who nothing can be hidden; the Alive but not with life; the One who Exists, but who is not confined to place; the All-Hearing and the All-Seeing, who has no ears and eyes; the One who ordered with justice, punished with favour, and commanded with bounty, but not to trap people under His Command. There is no rejecter to His Judgement, no challenger to His Decision, and no subduer to His Will. And His Command, when He intendeth anything, is only that He sayeth unto it "Be," and then it is. Therefore, hallowed be He in whose Hand is the kingdom of all things, and unto His is the return and final arrival. And I bear witness that there is no god but Allah. The Master of the Universe, and I bear witness that Muhammad (SA) in His Servant and His Messenger, the Master of the Prophets (of Allah) and the Best of all His Creation. And I bear witness that `Ali ibn Abu Talib (AS), isthe Master of the Appointed Guardians, and Commander of the Pious and Leader of the People with Radiant Foreheads. And I bear witness that the Imams (AS) from his Progeny after him are the Proofs of Allah to the Day of Judgement; may the blessings and salutations of Allah be upon them all.Al-Shaykh Abu Ja'far Muhammad ibn `Ali ibn Husayn ibn Musa ibn Babawayh al-Qummi, the jurist, a resident of Ray compiler of this book (may Allah, the Exalted, help him in obeying Him, and grant him success with his work, through His Contentment) said: I compiled this book because the opponents of our sect allege that we believe in anthropomorphism and determinism [jabr]. They made these claims on the basis of traditions [akhbar] they found in their books. Since they could not explain these traditions, and they could not understand their meaning, they distorted their original sense. In fact, they failed to compare the words of these traditions with the words of the Quran. As a result of their shortcomings, they distorted the beliefs of our sects among the ignorant. They confused people about our ways, and turned people away from the religion of Allah. They induced them to deny the Proofs of Allah. Therefore, I sought the favour of Allah, may His Remembrance beExalted, and sought His Help, through the compilation of The Book of Divine Unity which rejects anthropomorphism and determinism.

Book God and Humans in Islamic Thought

Download or read book God and Humans in Islamic Thought written by Maha Elkaisy-Friemuth and published by Taylor & Francis US. This book was released on 2011-01-25 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of The Iranian World Prize for the Book of the Year 2007 in the Philosophy and Mysticism category. This new and original text provides a timely re-examination of Islamic thought, presenting a stark contrast to the more usual conservative view. The explanation of the relationship between God and humans, as portrayed in Islam, is often influenced by the images of God and of human beings which theologians, philosophers and mystics have in mind. The early period of Islam reveals a diversity of interpretations of this relationship. Elkaisy-Friemuth discusses the view of three scholars from the tenth and eleventh century: Abd al-Jabbar, Ibn Sina and Al-Ghazali, which introduce three different approaches of looking at the relationship between God and Humans. God and Humans in Islamic Thought attempts to shed light on an important side of medieval rational thought in demonstrating its significance in forming the basis of an understanding of the nature of God, the nature of human beings and the construction of different bridges between them.

Book excerpt: Al-Kindi emerges as a philosopher who attempted to present, interpret, and supplement past philosophies as parts of an essentially unified tradition that would make for a viable philosophy in Islamic society. He assumes a place at or near the beginning of a philosophical current—based on transmission of studies from late Greek thought—that remained vital in the Islamic world for several centuries. Alfred L. Ivry presents a reevaluation of al-Kindi's relationships with the powerful group of theologians, Muʿtazilah. The commentary defines and interprets terms used by al-Kindi, identifies original Arabic and Greek sources, and analyzes the most recent critical research related to each allusion.
