This book was released on 2005-06-06 with total page 446 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The late twentieth century witnessed the birth of an impressive number of new democracies in Latin America. This wave of democratization since 1978 has been by far the broadest and most durable in the history of Latin America, but many of the resulting democratic regimes also suffer from profound deficiencies. What caused democratic regimes to emerge and survive? What are their main achievements and shortcomings? This volume offers an ambitious and comprehensive overview of the unprecedented advances as well as the setbacks in the post-1978 wave of democratization. It seeks to explain the sea change from a region dominated by authoritarian regimes to one in which openly authoritarian regimes are the rare exception, and it analyzes why some countries have achieved striking gains in democratization while others have experienced erosions. The book presents general theoretical arguments about what causes and sustains democracy and analyses of nine compelling country cases.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why does the interaction between Latin American students and the Latin American university--typically an archaic, socially insulated institution--regularly produce a significant number of students opposed to their governments and to the existing social structure? To answer this question, the authors of this comparative study of student political attitudes and behavior questioned students at eleven universities in six culturally similar but economically and governmentally different Latin American countries: Colombia, Mexico, Panama, Paraguay, Puerto Rico, and Uruguay.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The founding of the U.S. National Student Association (NSA) in September of 1947 was shaped by the immediate concerns and worldview of the "GI Bill Generation" of American Students, returning from a world at war to build a world at peace. The more than 90 living authors of this book, all of whom are of that generation, tell about NSA's formation and first five years. The book also provides a prologue reaching back into the 1930s and an epilogue going forward to the sixties and beyond.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between 1944 and 1996, Guatemala experienced a revolution, counterrevolution, and civil war. Playing a pivotal role within these national shifts were students from Guatemala’s only public university, the University of San Carlos (USAC). USAC students served in, advised, protested, and were later persecuted by the government, all while crafting a powerful student nationalism. In no other moment in Guatemalan history has the relationship between the university and the state been so mutable, yet so mutually formative. By showing how the very notion of the middle class in Guatemala emerged from these student movements, this book places an often-marginalized region and period at the center of histories of class, protest, and youth movements and provides an entirely new way to think about the role of universities and student bodies in the formation of liberal democracy throughout Latin America.
