This timely volume reviews the artificial heart program-and in particular, the National Institutes of Health's major investment-raising important questions. The volume includes: Consideration of the artificial heart versus heart transplantation and other approaches to treating end-stage heart disease, keeping in mind the different outcomes and costs of these treatments. A look at human issues, including the number of people who may require the artificial heart, patient quality of life, and other ethical and societal questions. Examination of how this technology's use can be targeted most appropriately. Attention to achieving access to this technology for all those who can benefit from it. The committee also offers three mechanisms to aid in allocating research and development funds.

Download or read book Oxygen Transport to Tissue XIV written by Wilhelm Erdmann and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 880 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The International Society on Oxygen Transport to Tissue (IS OTT) was founded in 1973 as a scientific society providing a forum for bioengineers, basic scientists (physiologists, biochemists and physicists) and clinicians (including anesthesiologists, intensive care specialists, pediatricians, neonatologists, internists, surgeons and other specialists) to facilitate the exchange of scientific information among those interested in any aspect of the transport and/or utilization of oxygen in tissues. From the ranks of its members, many fundamental discoveries and inventions have been made involving the many aspects of oxygen transport and utilization by biological tissues. The ISOTT proceed ings, now in its 14th edition, has become a standard work in the field as witnessed by the inclusion in the Science Citation Index of all volumes published so far. The 19th ISOTT Meeting was held in Cura~ao from August 24th through August 30th, 1991. The Cura~ao Meeting attracted 145 registrants and 45 accompanying persons. The format originated by Dr. Ian Llngmuir in 1985, consisting of posters ac companied by an abbreviated oral summary, was again successfully handled with slight modifications. The meeting was introduced by 6 review lectures covering the whole field of oxygen transport from bioengineering, the problem of diffusion in lung, blood and tissue through pathology of oxygen uptake in the lung, oxygen supply dependency of the critically ill to artificial oxygen carriers. A special session dealt with oxygen sup ply under ambiant pressure changes.

Download or read book Around the World with Nephrology written by Zbylut J. Twardowski and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2012-03-15 with total page 730 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the story of a boy raised up in a village in Poland during World War II, with his father deported to concentration camps throughout the war. Some years after he graduated from medical school, he serendipitously entered the then developing field of dialysis, and he eventually embarked on a career-long practice in the field, where he contributed to the development of a number of new inventions and therapeutic methods. The book contains 13 chapters covering the author's childhood, education, and his career-long contributions to the field of nephrology. The book includes inspirational stories of his patients; the struggles he faced in the course of getting his numerous inventions patented; his research work in the 1990s; his work of teaching and consulting; and not the least, his travels to interesting places unrelated to business. The book concludes with an epilogue summarizing his life, as well as his predictions regarding treatment of chronic renal failure in the future.

Download or read book Angiogenesis Protocols written by J. Clifford Murray and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-02-02 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the last few years, we have been deluged with information on ang- genesis. Scientists and the public at large are exposed daily to this “new” science, not just in specialist journals and texts, but in the tabloid press, where popular articles refer to angiogenic therapies as magic bullets and miracle cures for cancer, arthritis, retinopathies, heart disease, and circulatory problems. Is there no ill this approach will not cure? The fact that so much time, effort, and resource have been and continue to be dedicated to this new science is clear testament to its importance. Yet many fundamental aspects of angiogenesis remain poorly und- stood, in particular cues that activate the process. This fact has to some extent been masked behind a surfeit of fine detail; we can’t see the wood for the trees. Most studies of angiogenesis identify single links in a long chain of events. Furthermore, each study is itself hampered by the limitations of the biological end-point chosen. For instance, though endothelial proliferation may well be necessary for angiogenesis, it is not sufficient. Therefore, measuring endothelial proliferation in response to a novel growth factor, and on the basis of this obs- vation, stating that the factor is “angiogenic,” is unsound logic. It is important that researchers in this field, and perhaps more importantly those experimenting at its periphery, recognize the limitations of their chosen biological end-points.
Download or read book Artificial Heart 3 written by J.M. Anderson and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 543 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The International Symposium on Artificial Heart and Assist Devices has been held three times, first in 1985, then in 1987 and 1990. It is my great pleasure to present Artificial Heart 3 (Proceedings of the 3rd International Symposium on Artificial Heart and Assist Devices). The third symposium was held in Tokyo on February 16 and 17, 1990. Our original intention was to invite all the principal investigators from the major artificial heart research laboratories in the world, in the first three symposia. The numbers of investigators in the fields of the artificial heart, ventricular assist systems, and biomaterials, invited for the symposia, totalled 7 in 1985, 8 in 1987, and 13 in 1990. The program of the third symposium consisted of 41 papers; 13 invited lectures, 8 papers contributed upon request, with 2 from the United States, and 20 regular selected papers including 2 from the United States, ana 1 each from Australia, Germany, and South Korea. During the last three years, the state of clinical application of artificial hearts and assist devices has changed. In the case of pneumatically driven blood pumps, we have now stepped into the age of practical use in patients. Accordingly, in this symposium we gave a special emphasis to topics of clinical application, particularly the use of an artificial heart as a bridge to heart transplantation. Sessions on implantable artificial hearts, biomaterials for the artificial heart, and heart transplantation were also included.
Download or read book Dialysis written by Todd S. Ing and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2012 with total page 1008 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes the past, present and future of dialysis and dialysis-related renal replacement therapies so that the reader can acquire a firm grasp of the medical management of acute and chronic renal failure. By becoming thoroughly conversant with the past and present of dialysis, a health care professional will be in a much better position to provide the best standard of care to patients suffering from renal failure. As the book highlights the unsolved operational obstacles in the field of renal replacement therapies, future innovators may be inspired to develop novel solutions to tackle these problems. This remarkable work is a must-read not just for health care providers in the dialysis industry, but for patients, dialysis equipment manufacturers as well as pharmaceutical companies.
