Book Violin and Keyboard From the seventeenth century to Mozart

Download or read book Violin and Keyboard From the seventeenth century to Mozart written by Abram Loft and published by Hal Leonard Corporation. This book was released on 1991 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This wonderful book is written for musicians seeking to build or extend a sonata repertoire. Analyses are given of both well-known and many lesser-known pieces of music, with recommendations on performance as well as descriptions of difficulties. Many are suitable for student or amateur musicians. This is mainly a book for violinists, though; many of the keyboard parts of these pieces are little more than continuo accompaniment. The second volume, detailing the music of Beethoven onward, contains descriptions of music that puts the keyboardist on more equal footing with the violinist.

Book The Instrumental Music of Schmeltzer Biber Muffat and their Contemporaries

Download or read book The Instrumental Music of Schmeltzer Biber Muffat and their Contemporaries written by Charles E. Brewer and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2016-12-05 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on primary sources, many of which have never been published or examined in detail, this book examines the music of the late seventeenth-century composers, Biber, Schmeltzer and Muffat, and the compositions preserved in the extensive Moravian archives in Kromeriz. These works have never before been fully examined in the cultural and conceptual contexts of their time. Charles E. Brewer sets these composers and their music within a framework that first examines the basic Baroque concepts of instrumental style, and then provides a context for the specific works. The dances of Schmeltzer, for example, functioned both as incidental music in Viennese operas and as music for elaborate court pantomimes and balls. These same cultural practices also account for some of Biber's most programmatic music, which accompanied similar entertainments in Kromeriz and Salzburg. The many sonatas by these composers have also been misunderstood by not being placed in a context where it was normal to be entertained in church and edified in court. Many of the works discussed here remain unpublished but have, in recent years, been recorded. This book enhances our understanding and appreciation of these recordings by providing an analysis of the context in which the works were first performed.

Book Ornamentation in Baroque and Post Baroque Music with Special Emphasis on J S Bach

Download or read book Ornamentation in Baroque and Post Baroque Music with Special Emphasis on J S Bach written by Frederick Neumann and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2020-05-05 with total page 644 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ornaments play an enormous role in the music of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, and ambiguities in their notation (as well as their frequent omission in the score) have left doubt as to how composers intended them to be interpreted. Frederick Neumann, himself a violinist and conductor, questions the validity of the rigid principles applied to their performance. In this controversial work, available for the first time in paperback, he argues that strict constraints are inconsistent with the freedom enjoyed by musicians of the period. The author takes an entirely new look at ornamentation, and particularly that of J. S. Bach. He draws on extensive research in England, France, Germany, Italy, and the United States to show that prevailing interpretations are based on inadequate evidence. These restrictive interpretations have been far-reaching in their effect on style. By questioning them, this work continues to stimulate a reorientation in our understandiing of Baroque and post-Baroque music.
