Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The project is a revitalization project for a declined fishing harbor in the city of Xiamen in southern China. The harbor used to be very vibrant but became less popular in recent years. The harbor is one of the oldest parts in the city and retains many original characteristics of the fishing village, so there is a huge urgency to preserve the area. Based on the context and precedent study, it seems like the best way to revitalize the area is using an incremental process instead of "wipe out and rebuild" strategy commonly used in China. The project emphases on the social catalyst that creates the initial momentum for this incremental development, once the initial catalyst attracts some people back into the area, the owners of the other houses in the area will see the potential and start to upgrade their houses, in the following years and decades, with more and more houses renovated, the area will be back to life. This thesis will be focused on the catalyst of the redevelopment, which includes both urban renovation plan and individual buildings. The urban plan includes a harborside walkway, some parking spaces, a dock for larger fishing ships, and a small ferry dock. These plans are aiming at fixing some urban issues that trap the development. The building design includes 3 buildings, including a fish market that allows tourists and residents to buy seafood directly from fishermen; a restaurant to also take advantage of the seafood caught by the fishermen in the harbor, and a hotel that extends the tourists' time staying in the area.

Book excerpt: The People’s Republic of China (PRC) has become increasingly willing to project military power overseas while coercing and co-opting countries into accepting the objectives of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). Beijing’s greater willingness to flex its muscles, both politically and militarily, is supported by its overseas investments in critical infrastructure, which provide the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) with the logistical enablers needed to project military power beyond the ‘first island chain’ in the Western Pacific. ‘Controlling the seas in the region, leaping across the ocean for force projection’ is the term Chinese naval commentators use when referring to the PLA Navy’s bid to project power across the world. Australia should build its research and analytical capacity to better understand the nexus between the CCP and SOEs. That due diligence, building on open-source research conducted for this report, will better illuminate the PRC’s global expansion, potential grey-zone operations and the companies and individuals involved.
