Download or read book Recognizing Wrongs written by John C. P. Goldberg and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2020-02-04 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two preeminent legal scholars explain what tort law is all about and why it matters, and describe their own view of tort’s philosophical basis: civil recourse theory. Tort law is badly misunderstood. In the popular imagination, it is “Robin Hood” law. Law professors, meanwhile, mostly dismiss it as an archaic, inefficient way to compensate victims and incentivize safety precautions. In Recognizing Wrongs, John Goldberg and Benjamin Zipursky explain the distinctive and important role that tort law plays in our legal system: it defines injurious wrongs and provides victims with the power to respond to those wrongs civilly. Tort law rests on a basic and powerful ideal: a person who has been mistreated by another in a manner that the law forbids is entitled to an avenue of civil recourse against the wrongdoer. Through tort law, government fulfills its political obligation to provide this law of wrongs and redress. In Recognizing Wrongs, Goldberg and Zipursky systematically explain how their “civil recourse” conception makes sense of tort doctrine and captures the ways in which the law of torts contributes to the maintenance of a just polity. Recognizing Wrongs aims to unseat both the leading philosophical theory of tort law—corrective justice theory—and the approaches favored by the law-and-economics movement. It also sheds new light on central figures of American jurisprudence, including former Supreme Court Justices Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr., and Benjamin Cardozo. In the process, it addresses hotly contested contemporary issues in the law of damages, defamation, malpractice, mass torts, and products liability.

Always helpful, the Tin Gods drummer has a brilliant plan: I should fake date guitarist, Xander Lang, to make Tyler finally see me. WHAT?! Xander Lang Tyler sold his soul to the devil. It’s the only explanation I have for why he approved my ex-girlfriend as our opening act. Our relationship was the definition of toxic. Cue our drummer’s harebrained scheme. And honestly, I’m all in. It’ll keep my ex off my junk and help Harper with drama in her life too. Simple. Only problem is once we start “dating” lines get blurred. Her kisses don’t feel like someone who’s pretending. And when did Harper get so sexy? Now I’m tangled in a clusterf*ck of emotions and confusion. So much for simple.

Book Mimetic Theory and Film

  • Author : Paolo Diego Bubbio
  • Publisher : Bloomsbury Publishing USA

Download or read book Mimetic Theory and Film written by Paolo Diego Bubbio and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2019-02-21 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The interdisciplinary French-American thinker René Girard (1923-2015) has been one of the towering figures of the humanities in the last half-century. The title of René Girard's first book offered his own thesis in summary form: romantic lie and novelistic truth [mensonge romantique et vérité romanesque]. And yet, for a thinker whose career began by an engagement with literature, it came as a shock to some that, in La Conversion de l'art, Girard asserted that the novel may be an “outmoded” form for revealing humans to themselves. However, Girard never specified what, if anything, might take the place of the novel. This collection of essays is one attempt at answering this question, by offering a series of analyses of films that aims to test mimetic theory in an area in which relatively little has so far been offered. Does it make any sense to talk of vérité filmique? In addition, Mimetic Theory and Film is a response to the widespread objection that there is no viable “Girardian aesthetics.” One of the main questions that this collection considers is: can we develop a genre-specific mimetic analysis (of film), and are we able to develop anything approaching a “Girardian aesthetic”? Each of the contributors addresses these questions through the analysis of a film.

Book The UnBRCAble Women Series Box Set

Download or read book The UnBRCAble Women Series Box Set written by Kathryn R. Biel and published by Kathryn R. Biel. This book was released on 2022-02-20 with total page 548 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Are you ready to Be UnBRCAble? Get set to live, laugh, and love with this award-winning series, chronicling the journey of women gaining control over their genetics. Contains the complete award-winning novels: Ready for Whatever, Seize the Day, and Underneath It All. Ready for Whatever: An uplifting romantic comedy about facing your worst fears ... and finding out that everything might be okay. "Look on the bright side, Millie. At least you don't have cancer." Testing positive for the BRCA gene only means one thing: Millie Dwyer is almost certain to develop cancer at a young age. After losing her grandmother and mother to the dreaded disease, Millie's always feared a similar fate. But now the twenty-nine-year-old has technological advancements on her side, including radical surgeries, that can save her from ever having to deal with the Big C… but at quite a cost. Now Millie has to come to terms with a new normal—new breasts, missing ovaries, hot flashes, insensitive friends, and, worst of all, the knowledge that she'll never have biological children. One thing's for certain—she's never planned on trying to navigate the dating scene with all this on her plate … but on the road from loss to love, Millie finds that laughter certainly is the best medicine. Seize the Day: Current Mood: Freaking Out. Erin McAvoy is living her best life. A lover of tacos, witty T-shirts, and Pinterest, Erin is always ready to tell you about her favorite thing—the animals she tends to at one of the nation's best zoos. But then there's that other thing she doesn't like to talk about: how a supposedly-for-fun DNA test revealed that Erin has a strong genetic predisposition to breast and ovarian cancer. She'd like to conveniently ignore that elephant in the room, except for the fact that unless she does something soon, Erin will miss out on her only chance to have a baby. Up to this point, the only guy she's needed in her life was a sloth—the animal kind, not the lazy kind—named Barry. Turns out, if you want to have a baby, a sloth is not the right man for the job. Growing up in a conservative family, Erin's never even considered any other options, until now. She doesn't have a lot of time to wait, and online dating isn't for the faint heart. When co-worker Xander Barnes—foe—or friend?—or maybe even more?—comes up with a plausible solution to give her the baby she wants, Erin realizes this may be her last chance to grab the tiger by the tail. Her family may not agree with her choices, but Erin knows that if one leopard can change his spots, then she can too. And maybe, just maybe, this will be everything she's ever wanted. Underneath It All: Marg Kensington has the perfect life. No really, she does. A husband who's as detail-oriented as she is, two great kids, the house, you name it. The only thing not perfect for Marg (pronounced with a hard g, get it right), is the fact that she carries the BRCA-1 gene mutation. Marg won't let something like cancer stop her. Instead, she's being proactive and saving her life before she gets sick. A small bump in her perfect road. But that bump turns into a massive sinkhole when her breast implants are recalled, and she finds her husband has been cheating on her. Now faced with health crisis after health crisis, a failed marriage, and rebelling children, Marg can no longer keep up the facade of a perfect life. It's time, with help from a most unlikely source, to realize that facades may crumble, but it's underneath it all that really matters.

Book Blood Relations

Download or read book Blood Relations written by Jes Battis and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2015-01-27 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The television series Buffy and Angel revolve around radical conceptions of family. Indeed, their coherence depends on the establishment of nontraditional families that admit vampires, demons, witches, werewolves, and other bizarre characters without censuring them for their peculiarities. This work argues that what makes these characters enduring and engaging is their critical family connections--for their most involved struggles occur not within the graveyard, but around the dinner table, just as the most challenging adversarial forces that they must face are not demons or vampires but the stuff of everyday life. What does "family" encompass within these two series? How does it relate to concepts of gender, sexuality, power and the supernatural as they emerge from the shows' complex narratives? This book explores such questions. It also examines the "chosen family" (an idea marketed specifically by successful programs such as Friends and Sex in the City within the past ten years), juxtaposing it against various images of the fractured biological family displayed in both Buffy and Angel. Through eight chapters addressing various family-related aspects within both shows, this work plots the trajectory of this unstable notion of family, even as it is transformed, remediated, and rendered unrecognizable from a "family values" perspective by the unique and supernatural relationships that proliferate in Buffy and Angel.
