Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first history of Frank Lloyd Wright's exhibitions of his own work—a practice central to his career More than one hundred exhibitions of Frank Lloyd Wright's work were mounted between 1894 and his death in 1959. Wright organized the majority of these exhibitions himself and viewed them as crucial to his self-presentation as his extensive writings. He used them to promote his designs, appeal to new viewers, and persuade his detractors. Wright on Exhibit presents the first history of this neglected aspect of the architect’s influential career. Drawing extensively from Wright’s unpublished correspondence, Kathryn Smith challenges the preconceived notion of Wright as a self-promoter who displayed his work in search of money, clients, and fame. She shows how he was an artist-architect projecting an avant-garde program, an innovator who expanded the palette of installation design as technology evolved, and a social activist driven to revolutionize society through design. While Wright’s earliest exhibitions were largely for other architects, by the 1930s he was creating public installations intended to inspire debate and change public perceptions about architecture. The nature of his exhibitions expanded with the times beyond models, drawings, and photographs to include more immersive tools such as slides, film, and even a full-scale structure built especially for his 1953 retrospective at the Guggenheim Museum. Placing Wright’s exhibitions side by side with his writings, Smith shows how integral these exhibitions were to his vision and sheds light on the broader discourse concerning architecture and modernism during the first half of the twentieth century. Wright on Exhibit features color renderings, photos, and plans, as well as a checklist of exhibitions and an illustrated catalog of extant and lost models made under Wright’s supervision.

His solution was the Usonian house--a term he coined for the United States of North America. With their horizontal floor-plans, open living spaces, walls of windows, carports, and patios, these houses became models for many houses that now cover the American landscape. Here are a dozen examples of Wright's Usonian house.

Book Petoskey in Vintage Postcards

Download or read book Petoskey in Vintage Postcards written by C. S. Wright and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2004 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Historic Petoskey and the greater Little Traverse Bay area possess a wealth of natural and cultural gifts. The region's virgin forests, crystal clear waters, and powerful Native American heritage inspired Henry Wadsworth Longfellow to write "The Song of Hiawatha." Its plentiful wildlife and peaceful natural settings provided Ernest Hemingway with his early hunting and fishing experiences. Abundant natural resources set the stage for industries like the fur trade, lumbering, shipping, and limestone quarrying. Petoskey's ideal location on the picturesque bay has attracted visitors and adventurers since the 1870s. In this unique volume, author C.S. Wright explores the many legacies of the Petoskey area, from the native tribes that first protected the land through the eras of industry, transportation, and tourism. A rare collection of historic postcards illustrates Petoskey's rich history, providing immaculate images of pastoral scenes, industrial achievements, striking architecture, and community development.

Book Frank Lloyd Wright s Palmer House

Download or read book Frank Lloyd Wright s Palmer House written by Grant Hildebrand and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Frank Lloyd Wright's Palmer house, built in Ann Arbor, Michigan, in the early 1950s, is one of Wright's last residential masterpieces. Working from extensive materials gathered by Ann and Leonard Eaton, and from his own fifty-two-year familiarity with the building, Grant Hildebrand crafts the story of Billy and Mary Palmer's extraordinary home. He presents in detail the events surrounding the Palmers' selection of Wright as architect; Wright's personal creation of the design; the challenges, and the craftsmanship, of its construction; the evolution of its garden and teahouse; the role of the house as a setting for the Palmers' lives; and an analysis of its remarkable formal and spatial qualities. With a rich compendium of personal information and an extensive array of photographs, plans, and diagrams created especially for this book, Frank Lloyd Wright's Palmer House offers a comprehensive exploration of a living work of art and an intimate portrait of the people who, having brought it into being, treasured its presence in their lives for half a century. Citing the particular synergies of architect and client, house and site, Hildebrand situates the heretofore little-known Palmer house within the context of Wright's overall oeuvre and presents a convincing argument for the inclusion of the Palmer house in the canon of the architect's finest residential designs.
