Book excerpt: In The Real ABCs: A Surgeon’s Analysis and a Father’s Legacy, Second Edition, pioneering cataract surgeon Dr. Robert Osher reflects on his 40-year career and candidly shares that the secret to his professional success and personal happiness lies in the pursuit of “the real ABCs”—achievement, balance, and contentment. Dr. Osher was an internationally renowned surgeon and father of five when he was diagnosed with a pineapple-sized kidney cancer at age 53. Suddenly confronted with his own mortality, he resolved to write his legacy for his family, friends, and colleagues. The result is The Real ABCs, originally published after Dr. Osher’s successful recovery and newly updated with his experiences and wisdom of the last decade—an inspirational story of one man’s achievements as well as a prescriptive guide for finding balance and contentment. In The Real ABCs, Dr. Osher tells the story behind some of his accomplishments in ophthalmology, including the founding of the Cincinnati Eye Institute, the Cataract Surgery: Telling It Like It Is meeting, the Video Journal of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, and the introduction of groundbreaking techniques in cataract surgery. Dr. Osher demonstrates the importance of hard work and enthusiasm while admitting the inevitability of adversity and setbacks, acknowledging that his achievements wouldn’t be possible without the influence of his cherished teachers, mentors, friends, and family. Throughout the book, Osher also stresses the importance of seeking balance, whether it’s through nature, adventure, service, or adherence to one’s principles. The Real ABCs: A Surgeon’s Analysis and a Father’s Legacy, Second Edition is a deeply personal story filled with universal life lessons. Ultimately, Dr. Osher shows that approaching one’s career and personal life with passion and perseverance can help anyone attain a feeling of contentment and success.

Book The Indianapolis ABCs

Download or read book The Indianapolis ABCs written by Paul Debono and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2015-08-01 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Indianapolis ABCs were formed around the turn of the century, playing company teams from around the city; they soon played other teams in Indiana, including some white teams. Their emergence coincided with the remarkable growth of black baseball, and by 1916 the ABCs won their first major championship. When the Negro National League was formed in 1920, Indianapolis was one of its charter members. But player raids by the Eastern Colored League, formed in 1923, hurt the ABCs and by the Depression the team was fading into oblivion. The team was briefly resurrected as a Negro league team in the late 1930s, but was otherwise relegated to the semiprofessional ranks until its demise in the 1940s. Through contemporary newspaper accounts, extensive research and interviews with the few former ABC players still living, this is the story of the Indianapolis team and the rise of Negro League baseball. The work includes a roster of ABC players, with short biographies of the most prominent.

Book Raising the Stakes

Download or read book Raising the Stakes written by T. L. Taylor and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2015-01-30 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How a form of play becomes a sport: players, agents, referees, leagues, tournaments, sponsorships, and spectators, and the culture of professional computer game play. Competitive video and computer game play is nothing new: the documentary King of Kong memorably portrays a Donkey Kong player's attempts to achieve the all-time highest score; the television show Starcade (1982–1984) featured competitions among arcade game players; and first-person shooter games of the 1990s became multiplayer through network play. A new development in the world of digital gaming, however, is the emergence of professional computer game play, complete with star players, team owners, tournaments, sponsorships, and spectators. In Raising the Stakes, T. L. Taylor explores the emerging scene of professional computer gaming and the accompanying efforts to make a sport out of this form of play. In the course of her explorations, Taylor travels to tournaments, including the World Cyber Games Grand Finals (which considers itself the computer gaming equivalent of the Olympics), and interviews participants from players to broadcasters. She examines pro-gaming, with its highly paid players, play-by-play broadcasts, and mass audience; discusses whether or not e-sports should even be considered sports; traces the player's path from amateur to professional (and how a hobby becomes work); and describes the importance of leagues, teams, owners, organizers, referees, sponsors, and fans in shaping the structure and culture of pro-gaming. Taylor connects professional computer gaming to broader issues: our notions of play, work, and sport; the nature of spectatorship; the influence of money on sports. And she examines the ongoing struggle over the gendered construction of play through the lens of male-dominated pro-gaming. Ultimately, the evolution of professional computer gaming illuminates the contemporary struggle to convert playful passions into serious play.

Book Old School

    Book Details:
  • Author : L A Taylor
  • Publisher :
  • Release : 2020-12-09
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 316 pages

Download or read book Old School written by L A Taylor and published by . This book was released on 2020-12-09 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Go inside the world of pro-wrestling from its earliest days in 1947 to 1968. Mafia connections. Fixed matches. Urban legends. Raw and riveting, here's a novel that asks the question, "Did wrestling make TV or did TV make wrestling?" Jack Fitzpatrick learned from the best, his pops, Charlie Fitzpatrick, a mob-connected prize fighter. But Jack doesn't want to follow in his father's footsteps. He wants to go his own way into a new form of ringside sport-wrestling. With a boost from the mob, Jack moves forward in his quest to bring wrestling to the masses. Running the east coast territory and sitting as the commissioner of the United Wrestling League, Jack, AKA Caesar, dominates all aspects of professional wrestling. By the late 1960s, Jack decides it's time to shake things up with the Belgian Behemoth, a 7' 6" giant, chosen as the next UWL champ. If his scheme, backed by the other promoters across the country, fails then Jack's reign will be over. Deceptions and subterfuge lurk around every arena as Jack makes empty promises while Gizzi pulls the strings. The other promoters distrust each other as fathers groom sons to wrestle, win, and wrangle their way to the top. Jack's son, Jackie, and, Val, the son he never knew he had until it was too late, vie for the top role in Jack's legacy. As a media mogul in Atlanta begins taking over, wrestling may have found a way to the mainstream. It's a crap shoot as to who will succeed and who will be pushed out of the sport or off the cliff. From New York to Toronto to Detroit to Atlanta to Florida and to the west, the promoters-many of whom are former wrestling champs-make up the territories for the sport. None of them know exactly who to trust. Is it Jack? Gizzi? Both or neither? Failure will seal fates and the death toll hovers. Nothing is sacred and nothing is guaranteed in the smoky backrooms of a sport on either the brink of success via television or the edge of the abyss by its own shady and illegal activities. With a cast of unforgettable characters-Frank the Weasel, the Great Amir, Large Marge, Lou Appollo, Black Jack to name a few-L.A. Taylor draws the reader into the story and action with outrageous acts both inside the ring and out. Old School allows the reader a rare glimpse behind the curtain and into Madison Square Garden and the backrooms of the Copacabana where the likes of Ed Sullivan and Jackie Gleason make appearances. Even Jack Dempsey plays a role as a guest referee as a favor to Jack. Buy Old School, Ring Squared, Book 1, for an intimate look inside the world of pro-wrestling from its beginning through the explosion of the sport into the world of television. Neither would ever be the same.
