Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wrestliana: An Historical Account of Ancient and Modern Wrestling It is a common and received proverb, that A man is known by his works, and a tree by its fruits. Here, then, is an amusement peculiarly chosen not only by one better, and greater than any man but as if to give strength and firmness, combined with quickness and elasticity, to the limbs discrimination and vigour to the body; coolness to the head, and perception to the mind: the whole forming an ener getic combination of the whole power given to man. No exercise could have been selected, tending more to exalt his character, and from which such typical illustrations could have been deduced for his spiritual advantage. Here, then, we take our stand. Advo cates for anv other diversion, be it whatever it may. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Abraham Lincoln s Most Famous Case

Download or read book Abraham Lincoln s Most Famous Case written by George R. Dekle Sr. and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2014-04-17 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dispelling common myths and misunderstandings, this book provides a fascinating and historically accurate portrayal of the 1858 Almanac Trial that establishes both Lincoln's character and his considerable abilities as a trial lawyer. Even after the mythical elements are removed, the true story of Abraham Lincoln and the Almanac Trial is a compelling tale of courtroom drama that involves themes of friendship and loyalty. Abraham Lincoln's Most Famous Case: The Almanac Trial sets the record straight: it examines how the dual myths of the dramatic cross-examination and the forged almanac came to be, describes how Lincoln actually won the case, and establishes how Lincoln's behavior at the trial was above reproach. The book outlines three conflicting versions of how Lincoln won the Almanac Trial—with a dramatic cross-examination; with an impassioned final argument; or with a forged almanac—and then traces the transformation of these three stories over the decades as they were retold in the forms of campaign rhetoric, biography, history, and legal analysis. After the author exposes the inaccuracies of previous attempts to tell the story of the trial, he refers to primary sources to reconstruct the probable course of the trial and address questions regarding how Lincoln achieved his victory—and whether he freed a murderer.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Broad-sword and Single-Stick, authors Winn and Wolley state: "One of the prettiest little compliments you can pay a man is to call him a 'good old sportsman'." This may be true, particularly in 1918, when the book was initially published. In it, the authors aim to educate those "good old sportsmen" on techniques of fighting and defense with the broadsword (a medieval throwback) and the single-stick, a wooden weapon with a basket hilt vaguely reminiscent of a fencing foil. Dripping with English machismo, it shouldn't come as a surprise that Allanson-Winn, 5th Baron Headley was also a boxing enthusiast and wrote a book on that subject as well. What may come as a surprise, however, is that in 1913 the Baron converted to Islam, and authored several books on Islam under the name Shaikh Rahmatullah al-Farooq.
