Book Auggie Wren s Christmas Story

Download or read book Auggie Wren s Christmas Story written by Paul Auster and published by Henry Holt and Company. This book was released on 2014-05-13 with total page 33 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A timeless, utterly charming Christmas fable, beautifully illustrated and destined to become a classic When Paul Auster was asked by The New York Times to write a Christmas story for the Op-Ed page, the result, "Auggie Wren's Christmas Story," led to Auster's collaboration on a film adaptation, Smoke. Now the story has found yet another life in this enchanting illustrated edition with Argentine artist Isol. It begins with a writer's dilemma: he's been asked by The New York Times to write a story that will appear in the paper on Christmas morning. The writer agrees, but he has a problem: How to write an unsentimental Christmas story? He unburdens himself to his friend at his local cigar shop, a colorful character named Auggie Wren. "A Christmas story? Is that all?" Auggie counters. "If you buy me lunch, my friend, I'll tell you the best Christmas story you ever heard. And I guarantee every word of it is true." And an unconventional story it is, involving a lost wallet, a blind woman, and a Christmas dinner. Everything gets turned upside down. What's stealing? What's giving? What's a lie? What's the truth? It's vintage Auster, and pure pleasure: a truly unsentimental but completely affecting tale.

Download or read book The Wren written by Stephen Moss and published by Random House. This book was released on 2018-10-25 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the bestselling author of The Robin: A Biography, Stephan Moss: The wren is a paradox of a bird. They are Britain's most common bird, with 8.5 million breeding pairs and have by far the loudest song in proportion to their size. They also thrive up and down Britain and Ireland: from the smallest city garden to remote offshore islands, blustery moors to chilly mountains. Yet many people are not sure if they have ever seen a wren. Perhaps because the wren is so tiny, weighing just as much as two A4 sheets of paper, and so busy, always on the move, more mouse than bird. However if we cast our eyes back to recent history wrens were a mainstay of literary, cultural and popular history. The wren was on postage stamps and the farthing, it featured in nursery rhymes and greetings cards, poems and rural 'wren hunts', still a recent memory in Ireland particularly. With beautiful illustrations throughout, this captivating year-in-the-life biography reveals the hidden secrets of this fascinating bird that lives right on our doorstep.

Download or read book A New Start for the Wrens written by Vicki Beeby and published by Canelo. This book was released on 2022-03-17 with total page 373 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: **Winner of the RNA Saga Award 2023**Are these newly trained Wrens ready to protect Britain’s coastline? Following a humiliating experience involving the man she thought she’d marry, Iris Tredwick signs up to the Wrens in order to escape and find ‘the right sort’ of man to please her mother. After a bumpy start, Iris manages to befriend outspoken Mary and dreamer Sally as they are sent to their first posting – in Orkney. There she meets mechanic Rob, whose flirtatious nature both charms and confounds straight-laced Iris. Much more appropriate for her is local doctor Stewart, if only she felt the same spark for him as she does for Rob... As Iris, Mary and Sally work to interpret signals from incoming ships, they realise the enemy is somehow one step ahead of their manoeuvres, dropping sea mines under the cover of darkness. Could there be a spy on the island? And can the Wrens prevent disaster striking before it’s too late? A thrilling and lively Second World War saga for fans of Kate Thompson and Daisy Styles. Book Cassandra Wren of Black Crag

Download or read book Cassandra Wren of Black Crag written by MR R a Jones and published by R. A. Jones. This book was released on 2009-10-05 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The black despair that I had felt that morning came back to me. It was sicker and huger and more terribly unreal as the information was finally brought to light, dug out of the flight recorders of the three Wrens. "Wing wrack failure; inertialess lapse at critical point; the rotors ripped off; the craft destroyed. How can that be?" The Doctor's voice was strange, muffled, his words full of pain and puzzlement. His head was shaking as he went over the details of the three wrecked craft, "How could they all suffer exactly the same fault at almost exactly the same time; all at once? I don't understand it." I heard the quiet tread of the Master as he turned away from the portal and came towards us over the empty floor. I knew then that I would never get another chance. In my left hand I snatched a spare magazine, in my right I scooped up the heavy pistol from where the Doctor had laid it before he sat down. I took three swift paces away from the Doctor so he couldn't intervene and pointed the weapon straight at the Master. "Who are you?" I asked coldly, my eyes steady along the sights.

Book The Temple Church in London

Download or read book The Temple Church in London written by Robin Griffith-Jones and published by Boydell & Brewer. This book was released on 2010 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Founded as the main church of the Knights Templar in England, at their New Temple in London, the Temple Church is historically and architecturally one of the most important medieval buildings in England. Its round nave, modelled on the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem, is extraordinarily ambitious, combining lavish Romanesque sculpture with some of the earliest Gothic architectural features in any English building of its period. It holds one of the most famous series of medieval effigies in the country. The luminous thirteenth-century choir, intended for the burial of Henry III, is of exceptional beauty. Major developments in the post-medieval period include the reordering of the church in the 1680s by Sir Christopher Wren, and a substantial restoration programme in the early 1840s. Despite its extraordinary importance, however, it has until now attracted little scholarly or critical attention, a gap which is remedied by this volume. It considers the New Temple as a whole in the middle ages, and all aspects of the church itself from its foundation in the twelfth century to its war-time damage in the twentieth. Richly illustrated with numerous black and white and colour plates, it makes full use of the exceptional range and quality of the antiquarian material available for study, including drawings, photographs, and plaster casts. Contributors: Robin Griffith-Jones, Virginia Jansen, Philip Lankester, Helen Nicholson, David Park, Rosemary Sweet, William Whyte, Christopher Wilson.
