Download or read book Worth Every Drop written by Jonathan Henderson and published by Worth Life Publishing . This book was released on 2022-09-21 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I was raised to believe that there was a God and that He was a personal being. As a child, you don’t really question what your parents tell you. If they say there is a jolly, three-hundred-pound man who delivers all the Christmas toys in one night on the backs of flying reindeer with one red headlight, you believe them. When I reached adolescence, however, I felt compelled to question everything. I challenged the picture of God that emerged from the instructions given by my parents, teachers, and pastors. And these questions weren’t all of the trivial type, such as, “Can God create a rock so heavy that He can’t lift it?” Nope, they were: “Why do bad things happen to good people? Does everything happen for a reason, and according to God’s will? Everything? Including all the bad stuff?” Then there were the highly polarizing views that never appeared to be questioned, such as, “Trust, love, worship, and serve God, or else He’ll send you to hell.” Views like that were terrifying. If God is supposed to be our caring and loving Father, how could He burn to death His disobedient children? I didn’t think the worst parent on earth would do something that ghastly. This picture was beyond toxic and left me in state of fear. The fear of God made me feel small and worthless and that my only value to Him was worship and obedience. I’m sorry to say, but God seemed like a big bully, and pushing me around didn’t win over my heart. Sure, pushing one another down in a demonstration of strength was how my classmate Max and I became best friends in third grade, but I wasn’t in third grade anymore! Even when I was told that God loved me, and because of that love sent His Son to earth to save us all, it still sounded fearsome and gruesome. Did God have to torture His Son on a cross, otherwise He couldn’t accept me for who I am? Why would God have to do that if He’s the most powerful being in the universe? If He wanted to save us from the “pitchfork guy,” then He should rescue us with His superpowers instead of some bloody, seemingly orchestrated, sacrificial ritual. At the heart of all my questions, there was essentially just one question I was asking: Do I matter to God, or is it only what I do for Him that matters? To think that our service to Him is our only value, places us as nothing more than servants, or even worse—slaves. Yet I was assured as an adolescent that God wanted to be friends. He wanted to be my best friend, in fact. But how many friends do you have who would kill you if you weren’t their friend? Zero! You’d call the cops if that scenario were ever presented to you. However, we can’t call law enforcement on God. He is the law! And if you don’t obey His law, you get a divinely enforced death sentence. Thanks . . . friend? In the end, it left me stuck. How do you tell someone who can detonate you, “Thanks, but no thanks”? I eventually arrived at the conclusion that communicated exactly what I was reaching for: If God wants to truly be my friend, then He should be more friendly. Worth Every Drop is a journey of faith—discovering a God who is consistent, friendly, and trustworthy. It is a deep dive into the Bible to make sense of who God is, and who we truly are to Him. Whether you are a boomer or a millennial, agnostic or a believer, this book is for you.

Book Every Drop of Blood

Download or read book Every Drop of Blood written by Edward Achorn and published by Atlantic Monthly Press. This book was released on 2020-03-03 with total page 490 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This vividly rendered Civil War history presents “a lively guided tour of Washington during the 24 hours or so around Lincoln’s swearing-in” (Adam Goodheart, Washington Post). By March 4, 1865, the Civil War had left intractable wounds on the nation. Tens of thousands crowded Washington’s Capitol grounds that day to see Abraham Lincoln take the oath for a second term—and witness what was perhaps the greatest inaugural address in American history. Lincoln stunned the nation by arguing that both sides had been wrong, and that the war’s unimaginable horrors might have been God’s just verdict on the national sin of slavery. In Every Drop of Blood, Edward Achorn reveals the nation’s capital on that momentous day—with its mud, sewage, and saloons, its prostitutes, spies, reporters, social-climbing spouses and power-hungry politicians. Swirling around the complex figure of Lincoln, a host of characters are brought to life, from grievously wounded Union colonel Selden Connor to the embarrassingly drunk new vice president, Andrew Johnson, to poet-journalist Walt Whitman; from soldiers’ advocate Clara Barton and African American leader Frederick Douglass to conflicted actor John Wilkes Booth. In indelible scenes, Achorn captures the frenzy and division in the nation’s capital at this crucial moment in America’s history. His story offers new understanding of our great national crisis, and echoes down the decades to resonate in our own time.

Book The Worth of Water

Download or read book The Worth of Water written by Gary White and published by National Geographic Books. This book was released on 2022-03-29 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the founders of nonprofits Water.org & WaterEquity Gary White and Matt Damon, the incredible true story of two unlikely allies on a mission to end the global water crisis for good On any given morning, you might wake up and shower with water, make your coffee with water, flush your toilet with water—and think nothing of it. But around the world, more than three-quarters of a billion people can’t do any of that—because they have no clean water source near their homes. And 1.7 billion don’t have access to a toilet. This crisis affects a third of the people on the planet. It keeps kids out of school and women out of work. It traps people in extreme poverty. It spreads disease. It’s also solvable. That conviction is what brought together movie actor Matt Damon and water expert and engineer Gary White. They spent years getting the answer wrong, then halfway right, then almost right. Over time, they and their organization, Water.org, have found an approach that works. Working with partners across East Africa, Latin America, South Asia, and Southeast Asia, they’ve helped over 40 million people access water and/or sanitation. In The Worth of Water, Gary and Matt take us along on the journey—telling stories as they uncover insights, try out new ideas, and travel between the communities they serve and the halls of power where decisions get made. With humor and humility, they illuminate the challenges of launching a brand-new model with extremely high stakes: better health and greater prosperity for people allover the world. The Worth of Water invites us to become a part of this effort—to match hope with resources, to empower families and communities, and to end the global water crisis for good. All the authors’ proceeds from the sale of this book will be donated to Water.org.

Book Seven Sins for a Life Worth Living

Download or read book Seven Sins for a Life Worth Living written by Roger Housden and published by Harmony. This book was released on 2005-12-06 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Conventional wisdom,” says Roger Housden, “tells us that nobody goes to heaven for having a good time.” Seven Sins for a Life Worth Living, then, is a refreshing, liberating, and decidedly welcome dose of unconventional wisdom that awakens us to the simple delights and transformative joys of the world around us. With elegance, gentle humor, and remarkable openness, Housden takes us along as he recalls his personal journey toward an appreciation of what he calls the Seven Pleasures: The Pleasure of All Five Senses, The Pleasure of Being Foolish,The Pleasure of Not Knowing, The Pleasure of Not Being Perfect, The Pleasure of Doing Nothing Useful, The Pleasure of Being Ordinary, and The Pleasure of Coming Home. Housden writes, for instance, of submitting to the ultimate folly of falling in love, of celebrating our imperfections, of coming to understand the virtues of the Slow Food movement while enjoying an all-afternoon lunch in a small French village, and of discovering in a Saharan cave that, however extraordinary our surroundings, “we are human, a glorious nothing much to speak of”—and learning to be at peace with the notion. Such pleasures may be suspect in today’s achievement-driven, tightly scheduled, relent-lessly self-improving, conspicuously consumptive culture, but surely the greater sin lies in letting them slip away moment by precious moment. “The purpose of this book,” says Housden, “is to inspire you to lighten up and fall in love with the world and all that is in it.” Reading it is a pleasure indeed. “When you die,God and the angels will hold you accountablefor all the pleasures you were allowed in life that you denied yourself.” Roger Housden, author of the bestselling Ten Poems series, presents a joyously affirmative, warmly personal, and spiritually illuminating meditation on the virtues of opening ourselves up to pleasures like being foolish, not being perfect, and doing nothing useful, the pleasure of not knowing, and even (would you believe it?) the pleasure of being ordinary.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A teenage son makes a strange discovery one morning at the back of his parents closet. Wrapped in red silk and hidden beneath a pile of old photos is a beautiful samurai sword in its scabbard. When the boy confronts his father with his discovery, he soon learns the tragic story behind its acquisition and its villainous former owner. His fathers tale of one mans ultimate devotion to the woman he loves and the sacrifices he was willing to make in her name begins to unfold, changing the boy forever. Nate Walker had lived a lonely existence, tormented for much of his young life by the nightmares of an abusive childhood and his bouts with his personal demons. But when Sarah Ross entered his life by chance and fell in love with him, his life suddenly took on a whole new meaning. A lifetime of happiness no longer seemed an unattainable dream. Little did Nate know, however, that a lone bullet fired on a warm summer night in Las Vegas would drastically alter his life and threaten to destroy his future with the woman he loves more than life itself. The shadows from her past would catch up to them in the worst way possible. After burying his older brother, Mark ODane, Sarahs ex-fianc and the youngest son of a casino magnate, launches a desperate ploy to win her back. Despite his associates dire warnings, ODane turns to his fathers sinister chief enforcer, Dante Medina, to deliver Sarah an invitation to his party in Las Vegas, an invitation he knows she would not dare refuse. When the sadistic killer arrives in town, she has no choice but to accept his summons in fear of a violent reprisal against Nate and his loved ones. After setting in motion a disastrous last-minute attempt to see Sarah before her departure, Nate and his friends, Mitch Green and Roy Tucker, launch a frantic plan of their own to find her and, at the same time, protect their loved ones at home from retaliation. Broken and afraid, Nate and Sarah find their way back to each other, but are burdened with the haunting knowledge that the true horror Dante threatened to unleash is only just beginning. Volume I comes to a tumultuous end, but the tale of the samurai sword is only halfway complete. The epic love story concludes in volume II.

Book Mind Unchained Escaping the Overthinking Trap

Download or read book Mind Unchained Escaping the Overthinking Trap written by Gaurav Garg and published by Gaurav Garg. This book was released on 2024-08-02 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Welcome to " Mind Unchained: Escaping the Overthinking Trap." If you've picked up this book, chances are you're intimately familiar with the labyrinthine corridors of your own mind. Perhaps you've found yourself trapped in thought spirals that rival the complexity of a Rubik's Cube. Or maybe you've perfected the art of turning a molehill of worry into a mountain of anxiety. If so, congratulations! You're in good company. This book is for the overthinkers, the worriers, the what-if enthusiasts, and anyone who's ever lost sleep contemplating the potential ramifications of that slightly awkward thing they said at a party... three years ago. Full disclosure: I'm a card-carrying member of the Overthinkers Anonymous (we meet every Tuesday, unless we overthink it and reschedule). This book is as much a personal journey as it is a guide. Think of me as your slightly neurotic Sherpa on this expedition through the peaks and valleys of the overactive mind. Within these pages, you'll find a blend of science, humor, personal anecdotes, and practical strategies. We'll explore the neuroscience behind overthinking, delve into the art of mindfulness, and even dabble in the philosophy of present living. But don't worry, this isn't some dry academic tome. I promise there are jokes. Some of them are even funny (I think... I've been overthinking it). We'll journey together through topics like: Why your brain loves to play "What If?" on repeat (Spoiler: It thinks it's helping) How to make friends with uncertainty (It's not as scary as it sounds, promise) The art of mental decluttering (Marie Kondo for your mind, if you will) Strategies for taming the wild thought-beasts that roam your consciousness And much more! But here's the real kicker: this book isn't about eliminating overthinking entirely. Let's face it, that's about as likely as convincing a cat to bark. Instead, it's about developing a healthier relationship with your thoughts. It's about learning to dance with your mind rather than being dragged along by it. So, if you're ready to embark on this adventure of self-discovery, mental acrobatics, and occasional dad jokes, then fasten your seatbelt (or don't, I'm not here to tell you how to live your life... or am I overthinking this author-reader relationship?) Remember, the journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. Or in our case, a single thought about taking that step, followed by several hours of contemplating the pros and cons of different walking shoes. Let's begin, shall we?
