Book excerpt: The Pathfinder Ship Pegasus comes to the rescue of its sibling ship, Lexington Keeler. They find the other ship spiraling in toward the surface of a burning planet. The odds against a rescue are almost impossible, but the crew attempts it anyway. And so begins a story of heroism, betrayal, alien attacks, mystery, mutiny, and courage. And if those don't do it for you, there is also a smart-ass robot, a cyborg zombie, a trained nymphomaniac and a hive of telepathic rats. Crucible is the sixth book in the twelve-book Worlds Apart saga, and by the time it closes, the crew of Pegasus will never be the same. It will be a lot smaller, for one thing.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1999, Worlds Apart examined the nature of poverty through the stories of real people in three remote rural areas of the United States: New England, Appalachia, and the Mississippi Delta. In this new edition, Duncan returns to her original research, interviewing some of the same people as well as some new key informants. Duncan provides powerful new insights into the dynamics of poverty, politics, and community change. "Duncan, through in-depth investigation and interviews, concludes that only a strong civic culture, a sense among citizens of community and the need to serve that community, can truly address poverty. . . . Moving and troubling. Duncan has created a remarkable study of the persistent patterns of poverty and power."—Kirkus Reviews "The descriptions of rural poverty in Worlds Apart are interesting and read almost like a novel."—Choice

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on a variety of disciplines and documents, Professor Agnew illuminates one of the most fascinating chapters in the formations of Anglo-American market culture. Worlds Apart traces the history of our concepts of the marketplace and the theatre and the ways in which these concepts are bound together. Focusing on Britain and America in the years 1550 to 1750, the book discusses the forms and conventions that structured both commerce and theatre. As marketing practice broke free of its traditional boundaries and restraints, it challenged longstanding popular assumptions about the constituents of value, the nature of identity, the signs of authenticity, and the limits of liability. New exchange relations bred new legal and commercial fictions to authorise them, but they also bred new doubts about the precise grounds upon which the self and its 'interests' were to be represented. Those same doubts, Professor Agnew shows, animated the theatre as well. As actors and playwrights shifted from ecclesiastical and civic drama to professional entertainments, they too devised authenticating fictions, fictions that effectively replicated the bewildering representational confusions of the new 'placeless market'.

Book excerpt: In love but worlds apart is a self-help book for a man and woman who come from two very different cultural backgrounds and who are considering a life commitment to each other. It shows how and when their differences can be problematic, but also how such a relationship could succeed. This book enables partners to think and talk about their cultural differences (such as in manners, values, worldview, holidays and other customs), and to develop traditions and activities they can enjoy together. Questions to think and talk about, which are cited throughout the book, are again listed in the back for copying and giving to the partner to use. A list of possible priorities of choice is also provided to help partners decide whether or not their relationship could work long-term. For couples who have already begun or decided on an intercultural marriage, reading and doing this book may lessen their shock and frustrations and lead them into a more positive experience.

Book excerpt: Owen and Bethany try to find their way back to each other after the fictional and nonfictional worlds are torn apart in this fifth and final book in the New York Times bestselling series, Story Thieves—which was called a “fast-paced, action-packed tale” by School Library Journal—from the author of the Half Upon a Time trilogy. Bethany and Owen have failed. The villain they have come to know as Nobody has ripped asunder the fictional and nonfictional worlds, destroying their connection. Bethany has been split in two, with her fictional and nonfictional selves living in the separate realms. But weirdly, no one seems to mind. Owen—and every other nonfictional person—have lost their imaginations, so they can’t picture their lives any differently. Then Owen gets trapped in a dark, dystopian reality five years in the future, where nothing is needed more desperately than the power to imagine. Fictional Bethany is thrilled to be training with her father as his new sidekick, Twilight Girl—until she realizes that the fictional reality will fade away completely without the nonfictional world to hold it together. In this final installment of the genre-bending Story Thieves series, Owen and Bethany will be forced to risk everything to defeat Nobody and save multiple realities.
