Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 1996 marked the 125th season of the oldest continuously operating professional sports franchise in America: the Atlanta Braves. This comprehensive reference begins with the team's birth in 1871 as the Boston Red Stockings, and follows them to Milwaukee in 1953 and to Atlanta in 1966, playing under such a variety of names as Beaneaters, Doves, Rustlers, Braves, Bees, and back to the Braves. Book Good to the Last Out

Download or read book Good to the Last Out written by Theo Tate and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2014-06-16 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On October 13, 1903, Boston Red Sox pitcher Bill Dinneen recorded the first final out of the World Series by striking out Honus Wagner of the Pittsburgh Pirates in game eight of the first World Series in front of over 7,400 people at Huntington Avenue Baseball Grounds in Boston. By getting the final out, Dinneen helped the Red Sox capture the first of their eight World Series championships. Since then, the last out of the World Series has been a major symbol in American sports. This book chronicles the 96 players who made the last out of the World Series from Joe Tinker to Joe Rudi. It also chronicles the hitters who made the last out of the Fall Classic from Willie McCovey to Willie McGee. If you love baseball and if you love the World Series, this is the book for you. It shows baseball is good to the last out.

Book The Great Encyclopedia of Nineteenth Century Major League Baseball

Download or read book The Great Encyclopedia of Nineteenth Century Major League Baseball written by David Nemec and published by University of Alabama Press. This book was released on 2006-06-04 with total page 1057 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authoritative compendium of facts, statistics, photographs, and analysis that defines baseball in its formative first decades This comprehensive reference work covers the early years of major league baseball from the first game—May 4, 1871, a 2-0 victory for the Fort Wayne Kekiongas over the visiting Cleveland Forest City team—through the 1900 season. Baseball historian David Nemec presents complete team rosters and detailed player, manager, and umpire information, with a wealth of statistics to warm a fan’s heart. Sidebars cover a variety of topics, from oddities—the team that had the best record but finished second—to analyses of why Cleveland didn’t win any pennants in the 1890s. Additional benefits include dozens of rare illustrations and narrative accounts of each year’s pennant race. Nemec also carefully charts the rule changes from year to year as the game developed by fits and starts to formulate the modern rules. The result is an essential work of reference and at the same time a treasury of baseball history. This new edition adds much material unearthed since the first edition, fills gaps, and corrects errors, while presenting a number of new stories and fascinating details. David Nemec began the lifetime labor that helped produced this work in 1954 and admits it may never end, as there always will be some obscure player whose birth date has not yet been found. Until perfection is achieved, this work offers state-of-the-art accuracy and detail beyond that supplied by even modern baseball encyclopedias. As Casey Stengel, who was born during this era, was wont to say, “you could look it up.” Now you can.

Download or read book World Series Chronology written by Sal Tartaglia and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2019-05-16 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I'd like to thank you remaining reading dinosaurs for your interest in this project. I believe this compilation of baseball championship statistics differs from any previous attempts at documenting the history of the World Series.Since the Sports Encyclopedia-Baseball was discontinued by the Neft brothers & Richard Cohen there are few, if any, books that specifically delve into the Fall Classic with the fervor of World Series Chronology.Even if "Encyclopedia" were still available it would pale comparatively regarding the convenience "Chronology" provides. Their Baseball Encyclopedia, a wonderful and informative text to be sure, made the reader dig very deep to find information and determine how that data compared to similar numbers and teams from different eras. The World Series Chronology, as it states in the title, compares contrasts & coordinates the champions. For instance; if one were curious to know which team comes the closest to the New York Yankees record 5 consecutive titles (1949-53) one could in fact garner the answer in "Encyclopedia" after substantial investigation. But in "Chronology" it's easy to see that the Oakland Athletics string of 3 straight (1972-74) is the next franchise in line.Or if someone was interested in knowing which two teams faced one another the most times in World Series competition, again this could be found after much tracking in another publication. Finding that the Yankees and Dodgers have met 11 times would not be impossible to decipher from the "Encyclopedia". But again, "Chronology" does all the research and the information jumps right off the page for the reader. The Yanks dominated the BROOKLYN Dodgers in their 7 meetings, by winning 6 times. But since the Dodgers have moved to Los Angeles the teams have split their 4 match-ups evenly. These are just two examples of the myriad of comparisons, contrasts, & relative similarities of all of the franchises that have played the glorious game of baseball into the fall.Want to know what teams dominated a specific decade in their respective league? Or how many times? How about how many times have teams that won 100 games in the regular season have faced one another in the Fall Classic? Which team has the most sweeps? Who got there with the least amount of wins? How they all fare historically? Which league holds the edge? What effect does winning a title have on that team's city's crime rate? All of this information, combined with anecdotes, social & historical correlations, and so much more is conveniently at the disposal of the reader.Thank you for your time. I suspect that afterward, you'll thank me for mine.

Book excerpt: I'd like to thank you remaining reading dinosaurs for your interest in this project. Sadly I believe we are losing future generations to the art of the scribe. To actually pick up a book & hold it in your hands while turning pages is something tangibly enjoyable.
