Download or read book LOST TO TWO WORLDS written by J Michael Bailey and published by Ravello Books. This book was released on 2022-03-01 with total page 473 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “LOST TO TWO WORLDS is a sad reflection of our times, when evil men do evil things yet flourish without misgivings, while good men can anguish a lifetime from childhood trauma that permanently defines them. The story unfolds over two centuries on three continents. It focuses on the lives of two men whose characters are diametrically opposed: Benjamin Boyd, a Scotsman and a real-life, historic pioneer who arrives in Australia in 1842, and a fictional character named Daniel Hannaford, a mining engineer born in Australia in 1953. A man with few redeeming qualities, Boyd stops at nothing, including murder and a form of slavery known as blackbirding, all to satiate his excessive personal needs and a driving ambition to restore his family’s fortunes. 173 years later, Daniel Hannaford accepts an engineering contract on the small island of Lucaya in the Caribbean. Disturbed by a tormented past and an irresolute personality, Daniel meets Brianna, a Jamaican bartender at an island government party. That same evening, both are witness to a brutal attack on a woman, encouraged by the island’s premier and perpetrated by the son of an influential British Lord and billionaire. Separated by almost two hundred years, the two stories, narrated in juxtaposition, illustrate the good and evil of two very different men, one driven by greed and ambition and the other tormented by his past and the guilt of loving two women.” Excerpt From Lost To Two Worlds J Michael Bailey This material may be protected by copyright. If you can (ahem) swallow that, then beneath all the sex, humour and bravado you will find a vulnerable, honest, touching tale of what it means to be human... Approach it with an open mind, and what you get is a story about change that will, in fact, change you." Three words. Irreverent. Uplifting. Life-changing."

Download or read book The Great Detectives written by Otto Penzler and published by Open Road Media. This book was released on 2012-08-28 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The origins of literature’s finest crime fighters, told by their creators themselves Their names ring out like gunshots in the dark of a back alley, crime fighters of a lost era whose heroic deeds will never be forgotten. They are men like Lew Archer, Pierre Chambrun, Flash Casey, and the Shadow. They are women like Mrs. North and the immortal Nancy Drew. These are detectives, and they are some of the only true heroes the twentieth century ever knew. In this classic volume, Otto Penzler presents essays written by the authors who created these famous characters. We learn how Ed McBain killed—and resurrected—the hero of the 87th Precinct, how international agent Quiller wrote his will, and how Dick Tracy first announced that “crime does not pay.” Some of these heroes may be more famous than others, but there is not one whom you wouldn’t like on your side in a courtroom, a shootout, or an old-fashioned barroom brawl.

Download or read book Trauma and Resilience in Contemporary Australian Policing written by Andrew Paterson and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-08-18 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines how fifty police officers in South Australia keep well and “bounce back” from duty-related traumatic experience in the absence of practical, accessible and timely organisational support. It investigates mechanisms police officers presently use to “normalise” their duty-related traumatic experiences to preserve the delicate professional balance between “coping” and “psychic numbing” and avoid the much publicised perils of a PTSD diagnosis, while being appropriately responsive to colleagues, victims and survivors in their daily work environment. By revealing how police officers manage trauma—outside of the expectations of mental health professionals, union representatives and police leadership—innovative approaches and recommendations are offered to support first responders in moving from assumptions of post-traumatic stress and through post-traumatic growth. The book considers recent advances in post-traumatic growth and resilience theory and reinterprets exposure in a positive context, as well as preventative experiences in Australia and internationally.

Book excerpt: When a prominent American Senator, former Chairman of the House Committee on Strategic Defense Issues, is found brutally murdered in the apartment of a high-class hooker, his briefcase, containing Top Secret documents, is handed to Colonel “Jazz” Sinclair, the top operative in a deep-cover Black Budget operation codenamed Cobra. Breaking into the deceased Senator’s house Jazz finds a highly sophisticated underground control center containing banks of computers and other electronic devices. Attempting to hack into the data banks he is only partially successful, but unearths enough evidence to suggest the senator, under orders from a sinister force in Britain, manipulating a rogue faction within the CIA and Al Qaeda, orchestrated the 9/11 attacks back in 2001. Unable to further penetrate the various data banks; Jazz however learns enough to convince him the senator had been spearheading a sophisticated campaign to launch America into a War of Resources, with the major oil fields of the world as the ultimate prize. Taking what he obtained to his chief, Admiral Granite Blaise, the admiral decides to inform the President. When the Admiral is killed on his way to the White House and Jazz narrowly escapes an attempt on his own life, Jazz realizes he has opened a can of worms that could bring down the government. Going underground he solicits the help of his old friend, the celebrated Mafia Boss, Fingers Cabrioni, who informs him he has been placed on America’s “Most Wanted” list. Undeterred, Jazz digs deeper. Confronting the Boston banker who payrolled the 9/11 attacks he falls in love with the man’s beautiful wife, Abby. Together they flee to South Africa where Ab-by’s folks own a secluded holiday home. In the interim the British Force has contracted the services of the world’s deadliest assassin, known simply as “The Woman”, to find and eliminate Jazz. Can Jazz and Abby, at the mercy of a faceless, totally ruthless, seemingly invincible enemy, survive?

Download or read book The African American Soldier written by Michael L. Lanning and published by Kensington Publishing Corp.. This book was released on 2012-08-24 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than five thousand blacks joined the rebel Americans in the war as soldiers, sailors, and marines; many more supported the rebellion as laborers. Their service went largely unrecognized and unrecorded. Few letters, journals, or other narratives by blacks about the Revolution exist because whites had denied most African Americans an education. White historians of the period, and for years after the war, ignored the contributions and impact of thousands of blacks participants for several reasons. First of all, prejudices were so deeply ingrained that it did not even occur to most whites of the time that blacks had played a significant role either as individuals who fought or labored or as a segment of the population that affected decisions. Prejudices also prevented some who did witness the contributions of African Americans from honestly reporting that blacks could perform equally with whites on the battlefield if given the opportunity. Others did not mention blacks because of the difficulty of explaining why the United States kept half a million men, women, and children enslaved while fighting for independence and liberty." From Defenders of Liberty, by Lt. Col. Michael Lee Lanning (Ret.)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Four acclaimed authors team up for a seductive series featuring the hottest motorcycle club in New Orleans! Starring a quartet of bad-boy bikers who are hell on wheels—and heaven between the sheets—this addictive ebook bundle includes Make You Burn, Fire Me Up, Hold Me Down, and Strip You Bare. MAKE YOU BURN by Megan Crane Sean “Ajax” Harding’s oaths are inked into his skin, but only the death of his beloved mentor, Priest Lombard, could lure him back to New Orleans. Walking into the old hangout gives him a familiar thrill—especially when he gets an eyeful of the bar’s delectable new owner. Then he realizes that she’s Priest’s daughter. Sophie Lombard loved her father, not his lifestyle. She’s done with bikers . . . until Ajax roars into town—arrogant, tough, and sexy as ever. Every touch from Ajax is steamier than the Louisiana bayou—and heat like this may just be worth getting burned. FIRE ME UP by Rachael Johns With Priest gone, Travis “Cash” Sinclair inherits the Deacons’ clubhouse—and its unexpected tenant. All incense and art, with a sharp tongue that promises trouble, she’s definitely not his type. So why does Cash want to push aside those flowing skirts and lose himself between her legs? Billie Taylor fled a bad marriage to start a new life in the French Quarter. She refuses to let another man distract her, especially an outlaw biker with nothing to offer except hot sex and an eviction notice. Billie won’t fall under his spell—or into his bed—without a fight. HOLD ME DOWN by Jackie Ashenden Leonidas “Blue” Delacroix is the prodigal son of New Orleans aristocrats, but the Deacons are his real family. With their patriarch murdered, Blue’s ready to unleash hell—even if it means taking up arms against the girl who used to be his best friend. For Alice Day, loyalty is everything. She never forgot the scent of leather on Blue’s skin—just as she never forgave the sting of his betrayal when he skipped town. Seeing him again reawakens old feelings . . . and fiery fantasies. As their liaisons hit the boiling point, Alice trusts her heart with the deadliest choice of her life. STRIP YOU BARE by Maisey Yates Micah “Prince” Carpenter hates New Orleans. But when the brotherhood calls, he answers. Joining the hunt for their mentor’s killer, Micah crosses paths with a Southern belle who exudes class—and who could use a taste of the wrong side of the tracks. The daughter of a prominent family rocked by scandal, Sarah Delacroix is desperate to restore their good name. Micah’s exactly the kind of man she should be avoiding. Behind his sleek and sophisticated exterior beats the heart of a predator. But, like the tattoos beneath his tailored suit, his rough edges are irresistible. Praise for the Deacons of Bourbon Street series “Launching a biker-themed contemporary series, [Megan] Crane piles on the passion and danger. . . . This tough and dirty world is fascinating and satisfying in its own way.”—Publishers Weekly, on Make You Burn “As far as biker series goes, this one has certainly been a heck of a lot of fun! Sexy, smooth and sweet, Rachael Johns’s installment of the Deacons of Bourbon Street is not to be missed.”—A Tasty Read, on Fire Me Up “I can truly say that I am sad to see this series end. . . .
