Book Funnybooks

    Book Details:
  • Author : Michael Barrier
  • Publisher : Univ of California Press
  • Release : 2015
  • ISBN : 0520283902
  • Pages : 432 pages

Download or read book Funnybooks written by Michael Barrier and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2015 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Funnybooks is the story of the most popular American comic books of the 1940s and 1950s, those published under the Dell label. For a time, “Dell Comics Are Good Comics” was more than a slogan—it was a simple statement of fact. Many of the stories written and drawn by people like Carl Barks (Donald Duck, Uncle Scrooge), John Stanley (Little Lulu), and Walt Kelly (Pogo) repay reading and rereading by educated adults even today, decades after they were published as disposable entertainment for children. Such triumphs were improbable, to say the least, because midcentury comics were so widely dismissed as trash by angry parents, indignant librarians, and even many of the people who published them. It was all but miraculous that a few great cartoonists were able to look past that nearly universal scorn and grasp the artistic potential of their medium. With clarity and enthusiasm, Barrier explains what made the best stories in the Dell comic books so special. He deftly turns a complex and detailed history into an expressive narrative sure to appeal to an audience beyond scholars and historians.

Book The Assimilation of Yogic Religions through Pop Culture

Download or read book The Assimilation of Yogic Religions through Pop Culture written by Paul G. Hackett and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2017-10-23 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The image of the meditating yogi has become a near-universal symbol for transcendent perfection used to market everything from perfume and jewelry to luxury resorts and sports cars, and popular culture has readily absorbed it along similar lines. Yet the religious traditions grounding such images are often readily abandoned or caricatured beyond recognition, or so it would seem. The essays contained in The Assimilation of Yogic Religions through Pop Culture explore the references to yogis and their native cultures of India, Tibet, and China as they are found in the stories of many famous icons of popular culture, from Batman, Spider-Man, and Doctor Strange to Star Trek, Doctor Who, Twin Peaks, and others. In doing so, the authors challenge the reader to look deeper into the seemingly superficial appropriation of the image of the yogi and Asian religious themes found in all manner of comic books, novels, television, movies, and theater and to carefully examine how they are being represented and what exactly is being said.

Book Jungle Comics 100

  • Author : Kari Therrian
  • Publisher :
  • Release : 2017-06-29
  • ISBN : 9781548460938
  • Pages : 54 pages

Download or read book Jungle Comics 100 written by Kari Therrian and published by . This book was released on 2017-06-29 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: JUNGLE COMICS #100The main character associated with the title is Kaanga. He appeared in every issue of Jungle Comics. When Kaanga was a child his parents died in the jungle and he was raised by apes. The reader never gets to know his real name or his ancestry, but the jungle is where Kaanga feels most at home. In the first issue Kaanga meets his mate Ann, who is a Jane clone, after he rescues her from a white slave trader named Bill Blackton. Ann then joins Kaanga in his jungle existence. After nearly ten years Kaanga was given his own title in Spring, 1949. This ran for 20 issues until the Summer of 1954. One of the reasons for the series demise was the formation of The Comics Code Authority, a self-regulatory body that was formed because of moral concerns about the contents of many of the comics of the time. As much of Fiction House's material involved images of scantily clad women they withdrew from the market. You can enjoy again - or for the first time - JUNGLE COMICS #100 with this public domain reprint from GOLDEN AGE REPRINTS. Check out the full line - new titles every week!
