Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on a Navy SEAL's inspiring graduation speech, this #1 New York Times bestseller of powerful life lessons "should be read by every leader in America" (Wall Street Journal). If you want to change the world, start off by making your bed. On May 17, 2014, Admiral William H. McRaven addressed the graduating class of the University of Texas at Austin on their Commencement day. Taking inspiration from the university's slogan, "What starts here changes the world," he shared the ten principles he learned during Navy Seal training that helped him overcome challenges not only in his training and long Naval career, but also throughout his life; and he explained how anyone can use these basic lessons to change themselves-and the world-for the better. Admiral McRaven's original speech went viral with over 10 million views. Building on the core tenets laid out in his speech, McRaven now recounts tales from his own life and from those of people he encountered during his military service who dealt with hardship and made tough decisions with determination, compassion, honor, and courage. Told with great humility and optimism, this timeless book provides simple wisdom, practical advice, and words of encouragement that will inspire readers to achieve more, even in life's darkest moments. "Powerful." --USA Today "Full of captivating personal anecdotes from inside the national security vault." --Washington Post "Superb, smart, and succinct." --Forbes

Book excerpt: In the midst of our own intense storms of life, we desperately search for an anchor of hope. This book by author Bill Trout takes us on a journey towards gaining a better understanding of our pain and suffering. We will find that God alone is the one true steadfast anchor that we seek. Believers in Jesus are firmly secured to God as our anchor by a heavenly chain of very strong links. One of the most vital links is found in the answer to the following question: ‘What possible good could come from our suffering?’ There is great news! God can and does turn bad things into good things for us. To see him at work in our lives we need to ask God to open our spiritual eyes. To improve our vision of the Master Potter at work, we will look through a number of different spiritual lenses. Each lens will permit us to see a different Biblical perspective of viewing our pain and suffering. Not only will we see a broad range of the possible causes and sources of our trials, but also we will discover additional links in the chain of hope, which may have eluded us thus far. Though we have a natural tendency to blame God for our pain and suffering, we will learn that the devil is the primary cause for most of the trials we face. But more great news! As we grow in our faith and trust in God, we realize that he is an expert at ‘turning the tables’ on all of the devil’s deceptive schemes to tempt, torture and destroy us. God clearly “works for the good of the those who love him, who are called according to his purpose.” (Romans 8:28) He is the master of turning potential defeat into decisive victory! If we hold tight to him as our anchor, we can safely and securely ride out all of the storms of life until we reach that promised eternal heavenly shore!

Book Guy of Warwick

  • Author : William B. Todd
  • Publisher : University of Texas Press
  • Release : 2014-07-03
  • ISBN : 0292749643

Download or read book Guy of Warwick written by William B. Todd and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2014-07-03 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of Sir Guy, once as familiar as the tales of King Arthur, is now largely forgotten. Originally composed about 1240 A.D., this heroic romance early circulated in countless manuscripts, first in poetic, then in expanded prose form. Later, in 1525, the extended version was printed in French, and later still, in 1821, it was rendered into English. That last essential act unfortunately served little purpose, since the translation was thereafter available only to successive descendants of the family that prepared it. In 1959, however, The University of Texas acquired this unique translation, followed by a copy of the rare 1525 issue in 1963, and with both texts rejoined now offers, through William B. Todd, one final service: an edition for present readers. So rescued from oblivion, Guy of Warwick emerges as a grand exemplum of chivalric conduct. Perhaps even more than Arthur, or Launcelot, or Galahad, the hero is a very proper knight, displaying at once all the mundane attributes of nobility: unswerving loyalty to kin, kith, and king; the ready rescue of damsels in distress; the prompt dispatch of dragons, giants, or other enemies of the realm—and in aftertime exhibiting also all the spiritual qualities of true gentility: defense of the faith against every infidel, mortification of the flesh, and final withdrawal to a hermitage. Thus Guy may rightly deserve not only his early accolade as the "Hercules of England" but also some measure of the tribute usually reserved for a patron saint. However regarded, this knight's exploits must necessarily rank as one of the great "matters of Britain" and again become an essential part of Western cultural heritage.

Book The Grandest Stage

Download or read book The Grandest Stage written by Tyler Kepner and published by Anchor. This book was released on 2023-10-10 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the New York Times bestselling author of K: A History of Baseball in Ten Pitches comes the ultimate history of the World Series—a vivid portrait of baseball at its finest and most intense, filled with humor, lore, analysis, and fascinating behind-the-scenes stories from 117 years of the Fall Classic. The World Series is the most enduring showcase in American team sports. It’s the place where legends are made, where celebration and devastation can hinge on a fly ball off a foul pole or a grounder beneath a first baseman’s glove. And there’s no one better to bring this rich history to life than New York Times national baseball columnist Tyler Kepner, whose bestselling book about pitching, K, was lauded as “Michelangelo explaining the brush strokes on the Sistine Chapel” by Newsday. In seven scintillating chapters, Kepner delivers an indelible portrait of baseball’s signature event. He digs deep for essential tales dating back to the beginning in 1903, adding insights from Hall of Famers like Reggie Jackson, Mike Schmidt, Jim Palmer, Dennis Eckersley and many others who have thrived – and failed – when it mattered most. Why do some players, like Madison Bumgarner, Derek Jeter and David Ortiz, crave the pressure? How do players handle a dream that comes up short? What’s it like to manage in the World Series, and what are the secrets of building a champion? Kepner celebrates unexpected heroes like Bill Wambsganss, who pulled off an unassisted triple play in 1920, probes the mysteries behind magic moments (Did Babe Ruth call his shot in 1932? How could Eckersley walk Mike Davis to get to Kirk Gibson in 1988?) and busts some long-time myths (the 1919 Reds were much better than the Black Sox, anyway). The Grandest Stage is the ultimate history of the World Series, the perfect gift for all the fans who feel their hearts pounding in the bottom of the ninth inning of Game Seven.
