Book Secret Diplomacy

Download or read book Secret Diplomacy written by Corneliu Bjola and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-14 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume investigates secret diplomacy with the aim of understanding its role in shaping foreign policy. Recent events, including covert intelligence gathering operations, accusations of spying, and the leaking of sensitive government documents, have demonstrated that secrecy endures as a crucial, yet overlooked, aspect of international diplomacy. The book brings together different research programmes and views on secret diplomacy and integrates them into a coherent analytical framework, thereby filling an important gap in the literature. The aim is to stimulate, generate and direct the further development of theoretical understandings of secret diplomacy by highlighting ‘gaps’ in existing bodies of knowledge. To this end, the volume is structured around three distinct themes: concepts, contexts and cases. The first section elaborates on the different meanings and manifestations of the concept; the second part examines basic contexts that underpin the practice of secret diplomacy; while the third section presents a series of empirical cases of particular relevance for contemporary diplomatic practice. While the fundamental conditions diplomacy seeks to overcome – alienation, estrangement and separation – are imbued with distrust and secrecy, this volume highlights that, if anything, secret diplomacy is a vital, if misunderstood and unfairly criticised, aspect of diplomacy. This book will be of much interest to students of diplomacy, intelligence studies, foreign policy and IR in general.

Book World Politics Trend and Transformation

Download or read book World Politics Trend and Transformation written by Colton Lewis and published by Larsen and Keller Education. This book was released on 2023-09-26 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: World politics is a discipline involved in the study of political and economic patterns of the world. It is also referred to as global politics. It examines different political processes of political globalization with reference to questions of social power. The unifying theme of people, power and politics is integral to the framework of world politics. Its framework is composed of four central features, which are human rights; development; peace and conflict; and power, sovereignty and international relations. Some of the important trends which are studied within the domain of world politics are integration and democratization. Integration refers to the creation of interstate agreements and authorities that define the way in which political regimes of different countries should coordinate with each other. The concept of democratization implies an increase in the total number of states and non-state actors operating in the international arena. This book on world politics is a collective contribution of a renowned group of international experts. It will serve as a valuable source of reference for graduate and post graduate students.

Book Sports Diplomacy

Download or read book Sports Diplomacy written by Stuart Murray and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-06-13 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers an accessible overview of the role sport plays in international relations and diplomacy. Sports diplomacy has previously been defined as an old but under-studied aspect of the estranged relations between peoples, nations and states. These days, it is better understood as the conscious, strategic and ongoing use of sport, sportspeople and sporting events by state and non-state actors to advance policy, trade, development, education, image, reputation, brand, and people-to-people links. In order to better understand the many occasions where sport and diplomacy overlap, this book presents four new, inter-disciplinary and theoretical categories of sports diplomacy: traditional, ‘new’, sport-as-diplomacy, and sports anti-diplomacy. These categories are further validated by a large number of case studies, ranging from the Ancient Olympiad to the recent appearance of esoteric, government sports diplomacy strategies, and beyond, to the activities of non-state sporting actors such as F.C. Barcelona, Colin Kaepernick and the digital world of e-sports. As a result, the landscape of sports diplomacy becomes clearer, as do the pitfalls and limitations of using sport as a diplomatic tool. This book will be of much interest to students of diplomacy, foreign policy, sports studies, and International Relations in general.

Book Great Powers and World Order

Download or read book Great Powers and World Order written by Charles W. Kegley and published by CQ Press. This book was released on 2020-02-12 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Great Powers and World Order encourages critical thinking about the nature of world order by presenting the historical information and theoretical concepts needed to make projections about the global future. Charles W. Kegley and Gregory Raymond ask students to compare retrospective cases and formulate their own hypotheses about not only the causes of war, but also the consequences of peace settlements. Historical case studies open a window to see what strategies for constructing world order were tried before, why one course of action was chosen over another, and how things turned out. By moving back and forth in each case study between history and theory, rather than treating them as separate topics, the authors hope to situate the assumptions, causal claims, and policy prescriptions of different schools of thought within the temporal domains in which they took root, giving the reader a better sense of why policy makers embraced a particular view of world order instead of an alternative vision.
