Scotland is one of the oldest countries in the world with a vivid and diverse past. Yet the stories and figures that dominate Scottish history - tales of failure, submission, thwarted ambition and tragedy - often badly serve this great nation, overshadowing the rich tapestry of her intricate past. Historian Neil Oliver presents a compelling new portrait of Scottish history, peppered with action, high drama and centuries of turbulence that have helped to shape modern Scotland. Along the way, he takes in iconic landmarks and historic architecture; debunks myths surrounding Scotland's famous sons; recalls forgotten battles; charts the growth of patriotism; and explores recent political developments, capturing Scotland's sense of identity and celebrating her place in the wider world.

Book The Invention of Scotland

  • Author : Hugh Trevor-Roper
  • Publisher : Yale University Press
  • Release : 2008-07-16
  • ISBN : 0300176538
  • Pages : 328 pages

Download or read book The Invention of Scotland written by Hugh Trevor-Roper and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2008-07-16 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book argues that while Anglo-Saxon culture has given rise to virtually no myths at all, myth has played a central role in the historical development of Scottish identity. Hugh Trevor-Roper explores three myths across 400 years of Scottish history: the political myth of the "ancient constitution" of Scotland; the literary myth, including Walter Scott as well as Ossian and ancient poetry; and the sartorial myth of tartan and the kilt, invented--ironically, by Englishmen--in quite modern times. Trevor-Roper reveals myth as an often deliberate cultural construction used to enshrine a people's identity. While his treatment of Scottish myth is highly critical, indeed debunking, he shows how the ritualization and domestication of Scotland's myths as local color diverted the Scottish intelligentsia from the path that led German intellectuals to a dangerous myth of racial supremacy. This compelling manuscript was left unpublished on Trevor-Roper's death in 2003 and is now made available for the first time. Written with characteristic elegance, lucidity, and wit, and containing defiant and challenging opinions, it will absorb and provoke Scottish readers while intriguing many others. "I believe that the whole history of Scotland has been coloured by myth; and that myth, in Scotland, is never driven out by reality, or by reason, but lingers on until another myth has been discovered, or elaborated, to replace it."-Hugh Trevor-Roper

This book was released on 2017-01-05 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scottish men have tested their strength against each other at Highland gatherings for centuries. King Malcolm Ceanmore, who began his reign in 1057, is credited with initiating crude forms of today's Scottish Highland Games' athletic competition as a means of improving the abilities of his military. While the games had become festive occasions by the sixteenth century, they were still seen as a way for kings and chiefs to choose their best men. The origin of human games and sports predates recorded history. Several theories exist about the beginnings of our competitions. It has been widely recorded that during his reign in the 11th century, King Malcolm III of Scotland summoned contestants to compete in a footrace in order to find the fastest runner in the land to serve as his royal messenger. From that humble beginning, competition arose. Rival clans or kings would meet with their fastest, strongest, and best warriors in order to impress one's rivals and lay claim to the most skilled contestants. Today's Scottish Highland Games athletes may have day jobs, but they are still warriors! And the events are not only for the men! Keep an historical record of your Clan's participation in these games. Record the winner's information each time your Clan has a member who brings home the Gold, Silver or Bronze in any event, from Highland Athletics to Clan Challenges to Piping Competitions. This book is destined to become a valuable asset in your Clan Tent Library!
