Book Report of the Workshop on Use of Best Available Science in Developing and Promoting Best Practices for Trawl Fishing Operations in Africa Marrakech Morocco 20 25 March 2017

Download or read book Report of the Workshop on Use of Best Available Science in Developing and Promoting Best Practices for Trawl Fishing Operations in Africa Marrakech Morocco 20 25 March 2017 written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2020-06-01 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most contentious issues in management of marine fisheries is the use of mobile bottom contacting gears, mainly trawls and dredges. There are growing concerns about the overall ecosystem impacts of bottom trawling. Some countries have banned bottom trawling and some major retailers refuse to stock fish caught using bottom trawl gears. However, such decisions are not always based on the best available scientific advice. The initiative “Finding common ground on the scientific knowledge regarding trawling best practices (TBP)” is an international collaboration of leaders in the scientific community to understand how trawling and other forms of towed bottom-contacting gears interact with seabed habitats and their biota. An analysis of the datasets to which the project has had access has revealed an underrepresentation of fisheries from tropical regions. Bottom trawl fishery is important in the region because it provides food and livelihoods for a large number of people. The TBP project in collaboration with FAO held an expert workshop in 2014 in Bangkok (Thailand) covering South and Southeast Asia and another workshop in 2016 in Cartagena (Colombia) covering the Latin American region. It was considered important to address the data gap and to engage stakeholders in Africa to raise awareness about potential best practices for trawling. Therefore, the TBP project, in collaboration with FAO, conducted a workshop on use of best available science in developing and promoting best practices for trawl fishing operations in Africa in March 2017 in Marrakech, Morocco. Key research institutions, universities, organizations and independent experts involved in data collection and research on assessment and/or management of ecosystem impacts of bottom trawling in Africa were invited to attend the workshop. The workshop first summarized the progress made in the five phases of the project and then (i) identified availability of data on spatial distribution of trawling activities, source of data as well as gaps in knowledge in the African region; (ii) evaluated availability and applicability of data on habitat, bycatch and ecosystem impacts of bottom trawling in the region; (iii) began to assemble data on trawling intensity in representative ecosystems; and (iv) developed an arrangement for expertise and data sharing, and for continuing to collaborate to develop best practices for trawling to enhance sustainability of marine ecosystem that contribute to food security and livelihoods in Africa.

This book was released on 2010-10-21 with total page 500 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Artificial intelligence (AI) is a branch of computer science that models the human ability of reasoning, usage of human language and organization of knowledge, solving problems and practically all other human intellectual abilities. Usually it is charact- ized by the application of heuristic methods because in the majority of cases there is no exact solution to this kind of problem. The Mexican International Conference on Artificial Intelligence (MICAI), a yearly international conference series organized by the Mexican Society for Artificial Int- ligence (SMIA), is a major international AI forum and the main event in the academic life of the country’s growing AI community. In 2010, SMIA celebrated 10 years of activity related to the organization of MICAI as is represented in its slogan: “Ten years on the road with AI”. MICAI conferences traditionally publish high-quality papers in all areas of arti- cial intelligence and its applications. The proceedings of the previous MICAI events were also published by Springer in its Lecture Notes in Artificial Intelligence (LNAI) series, vols. 1793, 2313, 2972, 3789, 4293, 4827, 5317, and 5845. Since its foun- tion in 2000, the conference has been growing in popularity and improving in quality.

Drawing upon seminal works in the fields of language contact in general, Spanish in contact with indigenous and regional languages, and laboratory approaches tied to the languages in question, the volume’s contents employ acoustic and quantitative approaches, as well as both controlled and spontaneous data elicitation procedures, to shed light on how linguistic, historical, and social variables drive contact phenomena, and in turn, shape specific varieties of Spanish. It will pique the interest of researchers and students of fields such as contact linguistics, language variation and change, segmental and suprasegmental phonetics and phonology, and sociolinguistics.

Book The Oxford Handbook of Family Policy

Download or read book The Oxford Handbook of Family Policy written by Neil Gilbert and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2023-02-10 with total page 1089 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Handbook examines contemporary trends and issues in the formation of families over the different stages of the life cycle and how they interact with family-oriented social policies of modern welfare states, mainly in the OECD countries of Western Europe, East Asia and the U.S. Focusing largely on family needs in the early stages of the life course, the conventional package of policies tends to emphasize programs and benefits clustered around measures to support marriage, childbearing, care, the reconciliation of employment and childcare during the preschool years. Drawing on a multidisciplinary group of experts from many countries, this book extends the conventional perspective on family policy by also looking at later phases of the family life course. In taking a life course perspective, this Handbook extends the purview to encompass the three main stages of family life. These are (1) cohabitation, marriage and starting a family; (2) the early years of parenting, care and employment, and (3) the period of transitions and later life: family breakdown and intergenerational supports across the life course.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a comprehensive overview of the syntactic variation of the dialects of Spanish. More precisely, it covers Spanish theoretical syntax that takes as its data source non-standard grammatical phenomena. Approaching the syntactic variation of Spanish dialects opens a door not only to the intricacies of the language, but also to a set of challenges of linguistic theory itself, including language variation, language contact, bilingualism, and diglossia. The volume is divided into two main sections, the first focusing on Iberian Spanish and the second on Latin American Spanish. Chapters cover a wide range of syntactic constructions and phenomena, such as clitics, agreement, subordination, differential object marking, expletives, predication, doubling, word order, and subjects. This volume constitutes a milestone in the study of syntactic variation, setting the stage for future work not only in vernacular Spanish, but all languages.
