Download or read book Upcycling Sheltered Workshops written by Susan Dlouhy and published by Ohio University Press. This book was released on 2015-03-01 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At a time when the traditional sheltered workshop model has fallen under rightful criticism, and a new paradigm for disability programming is not yet in place, Upcycling Sheltered Workshops offers a revolutionary alternative. As many push to dismantle sheltered workshops, Susan Dlouhy and Patty Mitchell present the Creative Abundance Model, a proven method that redirects sheltered workshops from routine to creativity, putting participants in the driver’s seat. The Creative Abundance Model does away with the repetitive tasks that characterize traditional workshops. Instead, it is a structured but more open program that incorporates art, music, and other creative pursuits, freeing participants to discover their individual skills and talents. The authors both advocate for the model and provide instructions for implementing it, outlining such steps as obtaining funding, gaining the support and participation of the surrounding community, and preparing studios. Case studies from around the nation and inspiring photographs illustrate Dlouhy and Mitchell’s methods and document the many ways in which participants in Creative Abundance thrive.

Download or read book Workshops of Empire written by Eric Bennett and published by University of Iowa Press. This book was released on 2015-10-15 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During and just after World War II, an influential group of American writers and intellectuals projected a vision for literature that would save the free world. Novels, stories, plays, and poems, they believed, could inoculate weak minds against simplistic totalitarian ideologies, heal the spiritual wounds of global catastrophe, and just maybe prevent the like from happening again. As the Cold War began, high-minded and well-intentioned scholars, critics, and writers from across the political spectrum argued that human values remained crucial to civilization and that such values stood in dire need of formulation and affirmation. They believed that the complexity of literature—of ideas bound to concrete images, of ideologies leavened with experiences—enshrined such values as no other medium could. Creative writing emerged as a graduate discipline in the United States amid this astonishing swirl of grand conceptions. The early workshops were formed not only at the time of, but in the image of, and under the tremendous urgency of, the postwar imperatives for the humanities. Vivid renderings of personal experience would preserve the liberal democratic soul—a soul menaced by the gathering leftwing totalitarianism of the USSR and the memory of fascism in Italy and Germany. Workshops of Empire explores this history via the careers of Paul Engle at the University of Iowa and Wallace Stegner at Stanford. In the story of these founding fathers of the discipline, Eric Bennett discovers the cultural, political, literary, intellectual, and institutional underpinnings of creative writing programs within the university. He shows how the model of literary technique championed by the first writing programs—a model that values the interior and private life of the individual, whose experiences are not determined by any community, ideology, or political system—was born out of this Cold War context and continues to influence the way creative writing is taught, studied, read, and written into the twenty-first century.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Introduction by George WoodcockIt would not be an exaggeration to describe this book as the central work of Kropotkin's writing career. In one way or another, it occupied more than twenty years of his life. It is a work of argument and suggestion rather than dogmatic statement, and the very tentativeness of this great book make its perceptions all the more relevant. With at one time Kropotkin's view of our future might have been regarded as a Utopian dream, today, as a result of the growing realization that the world's resources of energy and raw materials are finite, that food is our most precious commodity and that people's working lives are futile and stultifying, the lessons of this book, for both the rich world and the poor, are topical and hopeful. In addition to a general introduction to the most significant aspects of Kropotkin's life and thought, George Woodcock has prepared a comprehensive afterword to each essay, allowing the reader to fully see Kropotkin's ideas in the context of the world a century later. Is the 9th volume of the The Collected Works of Peter Kropotkin.Table of contentsEditor's IntroductionPreface to the Second EditionPreface to the First EditionChapter 1The Decentralization of IndustriesEditor's Afterword to Chapter 1Chapter 2The Possibilities of AgricultureEditor's Afterword to Chapter 2Chapter 3Small Industries and Industrial VillagesEditor's Afterword to Chapter 3Chapter 4Brain Work and Manual WorkEditor's Afterword to Chapter 4Chapter 5ConclusionEditor's Epilogue1994: 255 pages, index
Download or read book Studios Workshops written by Sibylle Kramer and published by Braun Publish,Csi. This book was released on 2015 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A creatively designed environment is conducive to crea - tive activities. An occupation performed in a studio or a workshop usually includes both intellectual and practical aspects. The corresponding workspace must therefore have the characteristics of an office, while functioning as a place for production at the same time. Depending on the field of work, either one of these aspects can be more prominent, yet the aim is always to put constructive potentials into practice to achieve the best possible results. The projects presented in this volume include advertising agencies and product design work - shops, fashion and photographic studios, and - of course - architecture and interior design firms. The spaces for creative labor can be opulent, ascetic, bright, fancy, struc - tured, colorful, elegant - or even something completely different.
