Book Workshop Practice in Early Netherlandish Painting

Download or read book Workshop Practice in Early Netherlandish Painting written by Maryan W. Ainsworth and published by Brepols Publishers. This book was released on 2017 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent technical examinations of Early Netherlandish art have propelled in-depth studies of key works far beyond traditional connoisseurship methods. Ingenious new applications, as well as a prodigious amount of comparative technical documentation, have changed our views of standard workshop practices, including issues of materials and techniques, and details about the precise nature of collaboration. The studies presented in this book illustrate the variety of approaches and findings in what can be called the new connoisseurship. Here the reader will find alternative methods of evaluating Jan van Eyck's Saint Barbara and Ghent Altarpiece, Dirk Bouts's canvas paintings, Jacb Cornelisz van Oostsanen's Berlin Sketchbook, the Evora Altarpiece and the Saint Anne Altarpiece from Gerard David's workshop, Jan Gossart's Malvagna Triptych, and a triptych by Pieter I Claeissens. These individual studies will be of interest not only to aficionados of Early Netherlandish painting, but also to students who are keen to learn about the pivotal role of technical studies for this period of art history.

Book Early Netherlandish Painting at the Crossroads

Download or read book Early Netherlandish Painting at the Crossroads written by Maryan W. Ainsworth and published by Metropolitan Museum of Art. This book was released on 2001 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The nine papers collected in this publication- which comprises the third and latest edition to the symposium volumes by the Metropolitan Museum of Art - were first presented in conjunction with the Museum's exhibition of Early Netherlandish painting culled from its own holdings in 1998. The essays, by an international roster of leading specialists, together uncover the circumstances underlying the creation of works of art and shed new light on their meaning, in the context of the growing interdisciplinary activity and burgeoning scholarship in the field. The importance of archival research into the socio-economic factors that existed in the late fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries is emphasized- especially, the impact of art markets on the production of paintings as well as sculpture. Much new material has surfaced as a result of advances in the technical investigation of works of art, underscoring the premise that the clues to the meaning of a work are often found not only in its method of manufacture but also in the specific audience for which it was intended and in the function that it originally served for that audience. -- Publisher description.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Any contemporary understanding of early Netherlandish paintings must take into account not only that historical data about them is fragmentary but also that art historians have used a variety of premises from which to study the works. This book, therefore, explores how the paintings of the period and the factual knowledge surrounding them have been assembled, analyzed, and interpreted from their rediscovery in the early nineteenth century to the present day." "Assembling these multiple perspectives in one volume, the editors underscore the common ground shared by their colleagues and intend thereby to advance the scholarly dialogue among them."--BOOK JACKET.

Book Early Netherlandish Paintings

Download or read book Early Netherlandish Paintings written by Henk van Veen and published by Amsterdam University Press. This book was released on 2017-02-02 with total page 492 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fifth volume examines all the works painted by anonymous masters. Most works of the 15th and early 16th centuries are not signed. Several of these works have not proved possible to attribute to a known painter or to a master with a provisional name. These works, labelled as anonymous, have been little studied until now, because they are in general thought to be of lesser quality, and because researchers have prioritised the study of more important masters. It is, however, becoming increasingly apparent that these reflect the ongoing production of the time in the Southern Netherlands. Beside the fact that these paintings represent the themes that enjoyed a certain popularity at the time, their study opens perspectives onto the socio-economic context and workshop practice. These paintings could be destined for a broad market and betray different working methods allowing for swift execution in several copies. Furthermore, two of these anonymous works, dating from around 1400 or a little bit later, rank amongst the rare representatives of pictorial production in the Southern Netherlands prior to the technical innovations introduced by the Flemish Primitives. This production is by convention called pre-Eyckian painting.

Book Flemish and Dutch Artists in Early Modern England

Download or read book Flemish and Dutch Artists in Early Modern England written by MaryBryanH. Curd and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By examining their production practices in a variety of genres?including manuscript illustration, glass painting and staining, tapestry manufacture, portrait painting, and engraving?this book explores how Netherlandish artists migrating to England in the early modern period overcame difficulties raised by their outsider status. This study examines, for the first time in this context, the challenges of alien status to artistic production and the effectiveness of cooperation as a countermeasure. The author demonstrates that collaboration was chief among the strategies that these foreigners chose to secure a position in London's changing art market. Curd's exploration of these collaborations primarily follows Pierre Bourdieu's model of "establishment and challenger" in which dominance in a field of cultural production depends upon how much cultural, political, and economic capital can be accumulated and the effectiveness of the strategies used to confront competition. The analysis presented here challenges received opinion that a collaborative work is only a joint effort of artists working together on a single monument by demonstrating that the participation of patrons and middlemen can also shape the final appearance of a work of art. Furthermore, this book shows that the strategic use of collaboration served the goal of competition by helping to establish foreign artists in the London art market and suggests that their coping strategies have implications for the study of immigrant behaviors today.

Book Shaping the Netherlandish Canon

Download or read book Shaping the Netherlandish Canon written by Walter S. Melion and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 1991 with total page 481 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A treatise on Dutch art on par with Vasari's critical history of Italian art, Karel van Mander's Schilder-Boeck (or Book on Picturing) has long been recognized for its critical and historical influence--and yet, until now, no comprehensive account of the book's conception, aims, and impact has been available. In this in-depth analysis of the content and context of Van Mander's work, Walter S. Melion reveals the Schilder-Boeck's central importance to an understanding of northern Renaissance and Baroque art. By interpreting the terminology employed in the Schilder-Boeck, Melion establishes the text's relationship to past and contemporary art theory. Van Mander is seen here developing his critical categories and then applying them to Ancient, Italian, and Netherlandish artists in order to mark changes within a culture and to characterize excellence for each region. Thus Melion demonstrates how Van Mander revised both the structure and critical language of Vasari's Lives to refute the Italian's claims for the superiority of the Tuscan style, and to clarify northern artistic traditions and the concerns of Netherlandish artists. A much needed corrective to the view that Dutch art of the period was lacking in theory, Melion's work offers a compelling account of a sixteenth- and seventeenth-century theoretical and critical perspective and shows how this perspective suggests a rereading of northern art.
