Book excerpt: The Deerslayer, or The First War-Path (1841) was the last of James Fenimore Cooper's Leatherstocking Tales to be written. Its 1740-1745 time period makes it the first installment chronologically and in the lifetime of the hero of the Leatherstocking tales, Natty Bumppo. The novel's setting on Otsego Lake in central, upstate New York, is the same as that of The Pioneers, the first of the Leatherstocking Tales to be published (1823). The Deerslayer is considered to be the prequel to the rest of the series. Fenimore Cooper begins his work by relating the astonishing advance of civilization in New York State, which is the setting of four of his five Leatherstocking Tales.

Book excerpt: The Deerslayer or, The First Warpath: Large print by James Fenimore Cooper This glance into the perspective of the past will prepare the reader to look at the pictures we are about to sketch, with less surprise than he might otherwise feel; and a few additional explanations may carry him back in imagination to the precise condition of society that we desire to delineate. It is matter of history that the settlements on the eastern shores of the Hudson, such as Claverack, Kinderhook, and even Poughkeepsie, were not regarded as safe from Indian incursions a century since; and there is still standing on the banks of the same river, and within musket-shot of the wharves of Albany, a residence of a younger branch of the Van Rensselaers, that has loopholes constructed for defence against the same crafty enemy, although it dates from a period scarcely so distant. We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. Many of the books in our collection have been out of print for decades, and therefore have not been accessible to the general public. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Natty Bumppo — also known as the Deerslayer, the Pathfinder, and Hawkeye — returns in this adventure by America's first great novelist. Originally published in 1841, The Deerslayer was the final installment of James Fenimore Cooper's five Leatherstocking Tales, although its action precedes that of the earlier novels. Thus, the story provides a perfect introduction to the series, tracing the young hero's evolution from Deerslayer to Hawkeye. Cooper recalled the territory of his youth, New York's Lake Otsego region, in the settings of his novels, recapturing the region's natural beauty as well as the danger and excitement of frontier life during the French and Indian War. This dramatic tale of the Deerslayer's attempt to rescue a trapper and his family from an Iroquois attack was acclaimed by D. H. Lawrence as "one of the most beautiful and perfect books in the world: flawless as a jewel and of gem-like concentration."

Two such characters in the work who actually seek to take scalps are Henry March ("Hurry Harry") and floating Tom Hutter. In the dead of night Hutter and March sneak into the camp of the besieging members of the Huron tribe in order to kill and scalp as many as they can. Their plan fails, and Hutter and March are captured. They are later ransomed by Bumppo, his lifelong friend Chingachgook (the Delaware word for 'Great Serpent'), and Hutter's daughters, Judith and Hetty. Bumppo and Chingachgook come up with a plan to rescue Chingachgook's kidnapped betrothed Wah-ta-Wah from the Hurons; but, in rescuing her, Bumppo is captured. In his absence, the Hurons invade Hutter's home, and Hutter is mortally wounded by being scalped. After the death of Hutter his supposed daughters find out that they were not his natural daughters and he had been a notorious pirate. Bumppo's remaining allies and friends plan how to aid his escape from his Huron captors.
